lainOS

What happened to lainOS? And... If it was given up on, did nobody have the motivation to pick it up?
Chan Siu Ming · 2020-06-07 03:46
Last I remembered, LainOS was just debian with fluxbox and lain wallpaper.
Yet Another Lainon · 2020-06-07 08:25
About three years ago I tracked down one of the developers with the help of archive.org. If I remember correctly it was just a debian, like the other anon said, where they had a really bad fork of blackbox going on. Computers weren't ready for a coplandos style ui and, sorry to say, neither where those developers. The guy I spoke to had a really great website advertising his services for hire though

A proper lain OS would be an original kernel based on the ideas of serial experiments lain

>>7962 What ideas exactly?
Crash Override · 2020-06-07 12:15
>>7962 What does the fuarrrking kernel matter? Its just there to deal with the hardware. You can take any kernel you like and modify the api to suit your needs. First and foremost you need the basic userland software working.

>>7963 Lain used Lisp at home so I'm thinking something like a lisp machine.

>>7965 Just let linux load emacs. Boom, lisp machine.
dup · 2020-06-07 13:21
>>7965 Is there some practical purpose for it? Except fanboy faggontry over an obscure old japanese cartoon.
Fred Nurk · 2020-06-07 13:33
>>7966 Not quite. >>7967 For lisp? It's a general purpose language so you can use it for everything. If you're asking about lisp machines then yes as well. It's what computing should've looked like.
J.C. Denton · 2020-06-07 16:13
>>7967 I suppose if you were to make a LainOS, it wouldn't be the same exact thing as another OS. You'd definitely try to make it special in some way or another. So it wouldn't be JUST a fanboy OS but ideally, it'd also be practical.

The idea of building an OS for a niche audience was bound to fail from the start. Even if it had been completed it would rarely if ever be updated. It's better to just make a skin for some Linix distro that looks like and functions like the CoplandOS in SEL. It would be nice to have a secure voice control that runs locally not sending voice recordings to a cloud ...or something like that.
Unnamed · 2020-06-08 10:50
>>7969 making an OS/distro is impractical by nature. You have a perfectly functioning OS already. I would say its better to go as impractical as your abilities will allow. If that limit is linux, sure whatever, but if it's not, do better.
Molly Millions · 2020-06-08 15:49
>>7972 Yeah that'd be nice. I was surprised no one had done something like this already honestly.
Fred Nurk · 2020-06-09 05:55
>>7967 you have no idea how wrong you are.

Chani · 2020-09-24 03:43
you mean Lainux Debian is already a thing? fuarrrk

I'm a professional graphic designer and I for one would love to help bring this back to life

>>7972 I think as long as it makes some company money it can be last for a while. Things are also more portable now with docker, you'd still have to run >>8867 this on top of linux but if you made programs in that you could still run it on other machines. The author has some interesting ideas.
