I don't usually complain about moderation but this time I am actually mad. Even if it's something really petty and apparently inconsequential.
But, why are cartoon girls not allowed im the programming board just on the basis of being "irrelevant" is lainchan becoming a SRS board where only dry academic discussion is encouraged? Are we now trying to keep a "professional" facade that a cartoon girl would break? Or is it that only lain is allowed around here? No anime but Lain?
Some lain in the math thread posted a /sci/ reading list and lambdamod deleted it on the basis that it was irrelevant because it had an anime girl IN THE CORNER with no influence whatsoever on the actual content or the intention of the poster. Another anon went on to post a bunch of other infographics along the same line, and they were all deleted even though they all had (better or worse) references to reading material*. Only one of which was a blatant joke, the others had no reason (besides an anime girl in a corner) to be deleted. So what, also the Touhou in pic 1 will be deleted? Would it make a difference if it were lain?
I went right to the /rules/ and the only thing I found to be relevant was
>Just relax and try to have fun. Jokes are always welcome.
So does this not apply to /lambda/? You should then append that, then.
I am mad because it doesn't even make any sense. Are we really to post around like we're on a university/corporation and try to hide our anime girls? Or are we going to ostracize those that watch anime? Does the manga guide to python have a place in there? Or are we in the future just to post whitepapers and technical journals?
It isn't the first time I saw funposting deleted either. A way back on the C thread someone posted an outrageous wishlist for the language, which was clearly a joke. Things like "support for quantum computing" and whatnot. A couple replies in the same spirit and a butthurt tourist from /g/. You'd guess the last one would be deleted, but not the whole set! It was just a bit of fun, but it can also be considered a critique on the language (or it's recent additions), which I'm pretty sure it was. So are we to actually avoid all sorts of fun and just pretend we're in stack exchange?
I just want to post this because I think in general it's a bad direction to take things.
Unfortunately I have an idea of what I am to expect for a response. I get it if you want to keep *that* "oh wer're so srs we're academiks" feel to the board, but do write out the rules because I haven't seen it written that anime girls are not allowed.
*I did look up several of those books, actually, two of them because of the description from the infographic, so those were useful and relevant pics.

I'll prefix this post with the notice that it primarily applies only to /λ/, but /sec/ is related.
>But, why are cartoon girls not allowed im the programming board just on the basis of being "irrelevant" is lainchan becoming a SRS board where only dry academic discussion is encouraged?
I don't need to explain why cartoons are irrelevant to programming. I stomp out everything which is irrelevant. I'd figure we've both previously used 4chan's /g/, or at least had exposure to it; this is a poor forum where there's not much actual discussion of its ostensible topic. After leaving, years back, I mulled over what was actually my issue with it; it wasn't the cartoons, although common, but the irrelevancy. This inspired me to instate a rule regarding relevancy.
Now people there are, by my understanding, now posting socks and other nonsense as if it's relevant to technology in any way, but it's not. There are also issues with irrelevant politics, which I'd also stop. I figure it's considered good, much of what I prohibit in /λ/, but there are occasionally people who dislike part of the ruleset, as with this thread. I liken this to being glad I prohibit X, Y, and Z, but I also prohibit W and some don't like that I do. What's not considered is that part of the reason for the nicety of /λ/ is that all irrelevant topics are prohibited, not merely some I personally dislike.
>Are we now trying to keep a "professional" facade that a cartoon girl would break?
I dislike the typical ideas of professionalism as well, but don't pretend that cartoons make or break that position. There are official anime mascots, which are commonly posted in some forums, which is clearly this manner of insidious professionalism.
>Or is it that only lain is allowed around here? No anime but Lain?
I considered asking that no files be allowed in /λ/, which would remove the possibility for irrelevant files, but I decided against this because files can improve discussion. They allow people to upload their programs directly, show screenshots of programs in operation, share code diagrams, and other such things. The only reason files are allowed at all is because of this positive effect they can have, but I tolerate uses which are unnecessary, so long as they're not irrelevant. I also tolerate opening images, as I don't want to see boxes in the catalog, but I'll start deleting irrelevant opening images if they become an issue.
For the purposes of this discussion, Serial Experiments Lain is considered meta-relevant, and so is allowed. It's meta-relevant in the same way Usenet would be relevant to topics it hosts, because in many ways the medium is the message, and the overarching forum does influence conversation and meta-conversation.
>Another anon went on to post a bunch of other infographics along the same line, and they were all deleted even though they all had (better or worse) references to reading material*.
I feel comfortable pointing out the same poster who posted the infographic with the irrelevant aspects removed was also the poster who submitted the other infographics. In general, I would prefer not to reveal such information, but it seems fine here.
>So what, also the Touhou in pic 1 will be deleted?
Yes. Taking a cartoon and editing in a programming book is simply a more insidious way of trying to take something clearly irrelevant and pass it off as relevant. Attached to this post is an example I've sourced which I'm reasonably certain we'd agree doesn't belong in /λ/.
>Would it make a difference if it were lain?
As I mentioned, yes, an image of Lain would be allowed. I don't want every post on the board to contain Lain either, because that would make threads unnecessarily slow to load for those who don't have good Internet connections, and it would distract, but people posting Lain every now and then hasn't been such an issue. In general, the idea is to only use an image if it's relevant and improves the post; attaching a file just to attach it is discouraged.
>I am mad because it doesn't even make any sense. Are we really to post around like we're on a university/corporation and try to hide our anime girls?
Cartoons have naught to do with any of that. This implies everyone likes cartoons, and anyone who disagrees is going against the grain and should leave, which I dislike. Now, I like cartoons, and I read comic books, but those are completely irrelevant to programming.
I enjoy watching cartoons, reading comic books, listening to soundtracks or fan music, and also reading fiction. All four of these topics have dedicated boards, none of which are the programming board. Now people do claim that imageboards are Japanese, and so all imageboards must allow Japanese topics; I could just as easily claim the Internet is a US invention, so everything on it must accomodate US discussion; a Frenchman was responsible for the concept of the datagram as we know it, so that claim could also be made; a Greek could claim the relevant mathematics was created by them, and so on. This either leads to very few being happy with the arrangement, or the acknowledgement that forums can have topics, and other topics aren't welcome or detract from the discussion. Trying to make this argument in a forum such as 4chan typically leads to calls to leave, which I heeded, but I won't be told to leave Lainchan for the same reason, as I make the rules.
>Or are we going to ostracize those that watch anime?
No. I watch cartoons as well.
>Does the manga guide to python have a place in there?
An actual guide to programming topics taking the form of a manga would of course be allowed, as it's actually relevant. There was once a thread dedicated to translating some foreign Lisp comics, as an example. As another example, I'm aware of a pornographic manga which has been edited to contain SICP in place of sexual scenes; that wouldn't be permitted.
>Or are we in the future just to post whitepapers and technical journals?
Post that which is relevant to programming.
>It isn't the first time I saw funposting deleted either. A way back on the C thread someone posted an outrageous wishlist for the language, which was clearly a joke.
Part of the reason I deleted that chain was because of the reaction to it. I was willing to leave it, until it caused an issue. In any case, there's at times a fine line between jokes and trying to derail a discussion, and I resolve such.
>So are we to actually avoid all sorts of fun and just pretend we're in stack exchange?
I don't use Stack Exchange, but from what I know it would take effort to be so poor. The /λ/ is a place to discuss programming, and there's room for most things; I have fun by programming, and like to discuss my programming there.
>I just want to post this because I think in general it's a bad direction to take things.
This is the direction the board has been taken in for several years now.
>I get it if you want to keep *that* "oh wer're so srs we're academiks" feel to the board, but do write out the rules because I haven't seen it written that anime girls are not allowed.
A board's sticky has board-specific rules. I advise reading the following two stickies:
>>>/lambda/1
>>>/sec/1
Follows are the relevant excerpts:
>Relevancy is considered very important in this board. It is expected that every image and file will be strictly relevant to programming.
>Relevancy is considered very important in this board. It is expected that every image and file will be strictly relevant to security of this sort.

Thanks for taking the time to tell us about your preferences, but I have some discrepancies
>There are official anime mascots, which are commonly posted in some forums, which is clearly this manner of insidious professionalism
Just because anime mascots are used in some forums does not mean that they are professional. In general, they are not, except in certain countries like Japan where its more common.
I think that deleting the post was jutified but why don't you make the board text only? It would save a lot of trouble and a lot of the time pictures don't add anything to the discussion. I mean just not allowing image filetypes

>I feel comfortable pointing out the same poster who posted the infographic with the irrelevant aspects removed was also the poster who submitted the other infographics. In general, I would prefer not to reveal such information, but it seems fine here.
I don't mind. Tought it was obvious with the post times and the anger and all.
>An actual guide to programming topics taking the form of a manga would of course be allowed, as it's actually relevant.
Alright, I'd like to make a few short statements that I believe we're all in agreement with, for the sake of the argument.
>the Manga Guide to Python is relevant to lambda
>anime is irrelevant to lambda
>the irrelevant content (anime) in the Manga Guide is intrinsic to it
>the irrelevant content in the infographics or pic-related style image is not intrinsic to it, and can be removed
>the infographics were relevant to the topic at hand, even though they contained irrelevant non-essential content
And thus, my final thrust is: removing irrelevant content out of images whenever it can reasonably be removed is a huge pain in the ass and you shouldn't force people to do it.
I'm now content.

Having manga edited in on infographics can be motivational. (Hell even nonsense - Alice in wonderland?) Mischief is motivational. I can understand it's hard to see if a mischief was done in good or bad faith. Punishing them all the same just hurts innocent people. If a graphics is itself good but is generating bad posts couldn't you just delete the bad posts? You could just keep the good faith post and use it to warn. Your warning added it should warn bad faith posters to stay away, educate naive good faith posters, and keep the fun ie. avoid hurting good faith posters.

>I think that deleting the post was jutified but why don't you make the board text only?
Images can add to the discussion, I'm willing to stomp out those irrelevant, and so they'll be allowed.
>>7925
>And thus, my final thrust is: removing irrelevant content out of images whenever it can reasonably be removed is a huge pain in the ass and you shouldn't force people to do it.
I won't force people to do it. There are more than enough images where such modifications are unnecessary, and those can be used if it's inconvenient. That's to mean don't post those images containing unnecessarily irrelevant segments, as there are plenty lacking such.
>>7929
>(Hell even nonsense - Alice in wonderland?) Mischief is motivational.
The Alice in Wonderland is so old and so embedded in hackerdom, I suppose it would be fine. I'm not aware of anyone with a motivation to add it to that which it doesn't belong to, nor am I aware of any who would argue it must necessarily be allowed. Put simply, I don't think I'd be so hostile to something so old, such as that.
>Having manga edited in on infographics can be motivational.
Having furries, political memes, or other such things can also be motivational. Am I to accept anything someone edits into an infographic on 4chan? I won't.
>If a graphics is itself good but is generating bad posts couldn't you just delete the bad posts?
If an image contains that which I deem irrelevant, I'll delete the image before it causes bad posts.
If someone must post an image which contains anime in some form, it must be Serial Experiments Lain and it must not unnecessarily disrupt the thread, such as by causing a glut of unnecessary images as mentioned earlier. This also has the advantage of preventing pseudo-avatars from being used, since someone posting Lain isn't really distinguished from another (and there's symbolism with the show in that as well), and if someone tried to circumvent this by modifying images of Lain in a way that worked as pseudo-avatars, I'd similarly become hostile to that.

I've been doing this for years and I'm not going to compromise on this issue.

>other such things
It pains me to see manga so wrongly put in that bag. I wish manga is better understood than that.
I understand you not wanting to allow anything irrelevant. That is good. Thank you for having time to answer.
