Moderation and Politics on /drug/
Tank · 2020-05-06 10:57
Hey lains,
this might be a bit off topic when it comes to drugs but it is certainly relevant when it comes to this board.
>So I recently gave a typical chan-type answer to a trans autistic guy on here
>A day later I see my post missing
>Guess the mods deleted it because it wasn't PC enough
Well.. can anyone give me any insight on this?
I always had the feeling that all of the chans catered towards free speech. Even if not everyone agrees or some people might get their feelings hurt.
>If you disagree, either ignore or state your disagreement in a post of your own - not just delete/ban opinions that you disagree with as thoughtcrime.
Roger Pollack · 2020-05-06 11:09
Opinions are fine, but if you write very low-effort soykafpоsts like a tourist from you-know-where (or anywhere really), they get removed.
You've posted this thread on the wrong board too, which means you clearly haven't read the rules, and it's gonna get locked. Lurk moar
sage · 2020-05-06 11:10
Yes this place is a dictatorship without frozen fruit so you better leave for places with freedom and contribute your quality posts there.
Nobody special · 2020-05-06 11:22

Been on this board for about 7-8 months now. Not an old user, I admit, but not a tourist either.
I have read the rules on the sticky post of this board and there is no rule "dont talk about the state of this board".
Also elaborate on which board this post should go instead, don't just say it belongs somewhere unnamed.
And yeah, seems like you value feelings over freedom. That pretty much says enough about the type of character you have.
I disagree with you, yet I don't want your disagreement deleted or derezzed.

Alright I've read the rules you were so keen about. You clearly haven't read rule no. 6 given that you also broke it.

Same rule I was referring to. This thread should've been posted on /q/ so it's probably gonna get moved there anyway.
From what I've seen, posts don't get removed unless they break rules 3 and 4. If you elaborate on your opinions and they're relevant, then there's quality discussion and everything's good. It's not out of a desire to censor.
I personally really, really hate censorship and "typical" power-tripping forum moderation, but that's not the case here and it's really not hard to fit in.
Ni-chan · 2020-05-06 12:28
Hello, I deleted your post.
>>So I recently gave a typical chan-type answer to a trans autistic guy on here
Perhaps you should make better posts because lainchan isn't a usual "chan-type" imageboard. I'm not sure which post you're exactly referring to but it was probably because it was either a rule 3 or rule 4 violation or it was off-topic. Given that you're puzzled because something like this is happening you should consult the rules page before making future posts.
Shogun · 2020-05-06 12:36

How convenient that you left out the part:
Do not whine and cry about 8chan, "quality", "invasions", "new users".
To go back to your original post:
>"very low-effort soykafpоsts" -> quality
>"like a tourist from you-know-where" -> new user, 8chan
Batou · 2020-05-06 12:43

Rule 6 -> Do not whine about quality
Well, seems like I misjudged this board. I didn't think you would run this board like they run reddit, tumblr or reset era.
Given the structure and name of this website, I thought you anons would be fine with free speech, even if hurtful.
I am happy to let myself get insulted/called a fgt or degenerate, as long as I am free to say so myself.
Isn't that the beauty of the internet? Growing a thick skin yourself and not having to worry about feelings of other anonymous people. Being free?
Ni-chan · 2020-05-06 13:01
>>7778
>Rule 6 -> Do not whine about quality
I don't see what are you trying to say? Why would you derail a thread just so you could complain about 8chan/4chan/mods/whatnot instead of making a thread on /q/?
>I am happy to let myself get insulted/called a fgt or degenerate, as long as I am free to say so myself.
It seems that you'd be quite unhappy on Lainchan because both of those posts are violations of rule 3 and rule 4 respectively and they would get deleted.
>Isn't that the beauty of the internet? Growing a thick skin yourself and not having to worry about feelings of other anonymous people. Being free?
You're allowed to disagree but you're not allowed to break the rules/derail threads just so you could post buzzwords and similar nonsense which is unrelated.

Dr. X · 2020-05-06 13:28

Both feelings and quality are subjective.
Free speech is objective.
Those two statements are facts.
If you are the one that decides when I hurt someones feelings or my posts are low quality, then there is literally nothing I can do in order to argue otherwise.
But don't worry too much over stupid people like me. This is probably my last thread here anyways.
There is no point in me coming here if I'm not free to say what I want to say. I won't be hurting your feelings much longer, you will soon have your safe space back.

so no, saying anything you like is not always free speech
Sabo Engle · 2020-05-06 13:59
>>7787
Everything falls under free speech, unless you are literally inciting to violence/terrorism/grape or some soykaf like that. You know, things that have an actual visible impact on reality.
What you are doing is getting your feelings hurt online because someone said a bad no no word. Then go cry about it, trying to ban/delete that person. This is ridiculous.
Once you start to take away the importance of free speech, even just a tiny bit - that leaves a dangerous precedent. There is no going back, it will only get worse from there. You will be affected too.
Then at some point you will look around and ask yourself where all that freedom went and if the supposed safety and your feelings were really worth it.

IMO if the moderation here feels totalitarian to you, then maybe this just isn't your type of site. Most seem to enjoy it so hopefully you can find one that's a better fit for you.
Random · 2020-05-06 14:38
if your post is not long pretensious and about cyberpunk philosophy or some soykaf, there is 50% chance it will get deleted, 90% if you use "bad words" from 4chan. Many times i asked actual programming question, and no one was able to answer, most of new threads on programming board is "How to start help guys", or other newbie beginner stuff. It seems to me you guys think you are smarter than you actually are. I am low IQ but at least i am honest about it
Apoc · 2020-05-06 14:47

What? I think you got the wrong thread man. This discussion is about the politics/moderation on the site, about the value of freedom of speech/feelings.
Noone said anything about cyberpunk, programming, newbies or IQ. Don't even know where you're trying to go with this..
Nameless · 2020-05-06 14:49

>>7784
This will most likely be my last thread on this website. Only been here for a good few months and really grew to like the boards but well, if I don't agree with the moderation here then I am clearly not in the position to make arguments.
Again, given the name and structure of the site, I thought it would gravitate more towards FoS like most of the other chans do and less towards safety/feelings like reddit/reset era/... do.
Well, guess I'm off looking for another chan that fits my criteria better then. Good luck and have fun anons.
Yu-ichi · 2020-05-06 16:22
I'm guessing the post in question was something like "fuarrrk off, autistic tranny"? (strange that OP didn't quote it directly) I don't understand why people have so much trouble with rule 3's prohibition on personal attacks. It's right there in the rules and easily comprehensible.
Nell · 2020-05-06 17:06
When it comes down to it, you're posting on someone else's server.
sage · 2020-05-06 20:35
>>7797
I think this ignores the goals of a given board. Just because it is their server, it means nothing without a community. It is essential to cultivate that community. This does mean culling in addition to cultivating, because you need people to feel welcome (the target audience) and want those who would harm the community to feel unwelcome.

>So I recently gave a typical chan-type answer to a trans autistic guy on here
There's nothing against the rules about hating trannies. What you need to understand is that it's perfectly fine to have an opinion, but giving a "typical chan-type answer" probably won't be allowed. It lowers quality and most of us don't want it seeping out over here.
Here's an example of a good way to dismiss trannies:
>It's clear being a tranny is a sign of mental illness. It's physically impossible to change sex and the surgeries performed are just mutilation. This is clear to anyone who looks at them.
You probably wrote something like this:
>cope, seeth, dilate
Understand that this 4chan garbage is encouraging meaningless buzzwords to be unintelligently parroted. I wouldn't be surprised if this was slowly done to enable machines to spam 4chan discussions without being detected. Programming a machine to simulate coherent human thought is active research, but programming a machine to randomly respond to a post with words so purposefully deprived of meaning that they can be used in response to anything is trivial.
>I always had the feeling that all of the chans catered towards free speech.
It's illegal everywhere in the world to have true free speech zones. With this in mind, it's questionable this would even be desirable, because the Internet makes it too easy for spam and other things to drown out all discussion. Lainchan has a focus and rules which are applied consistently, which is something that isn't the case for other websites, which have no focus, too many vague rules, and staff which use them to selectively target those they dislike.
>Even if not everyone agrees or some people might get their feelings hurt.
There's nothing against the rules about hurting someone's feelings. Read the rules. What I think of every time someone complains about the rules on Lainchan like this is how they're here and not one of those looser imageboards. Most of the smaller imageboards are either dead or full of spam and porn, so not many actually want to use them. Why try to use Lainchan, which has moderation preventing this, but then complain about those rules you dislike? It reminds me of when people want Lainchan to be more like 4chan, but they really mean better than 4chan, except for their pet issue which should be allowed, not understanding the lack thereof is perhaps part of why Lainchan is better.

For context, this way on the /drug/ board and that kid said something about always giggling like a autistic child when getting high.
I responded with something like this:
--------
>I am a trans girl with aspergers
So, not to intterrupt you or anything but..
You might aswell off yourself at that point
---------
That thread seems to be a protected area because of that kids mental illness. I've seen about 5-10 answers like or worse than mine and all of them got deleted.

Do you mean to say that you see no connection between site Rule 3 (which existed the whole time you were here and has been applied in multiple threads other than this one) and your post (and those similar to it)? Let's try quoting both at once.
>Global Rule 3. Always argue in good faith and avoid using personal attacks.
>So, not to intterrupt you or anything but..You might aswell off yourself at that point
You can argue that your post is not a true violation, as it can be interpreted in multiple ways, but, crucially, one of the likely interpretations amounts to a clear violation of the rule in question. Further, if the other posts were "worse" than yours, they were even more likely to be interpreted as violations. That's not even getting into Rule 4, which also applies here. So, with this in mind, why is it that you are under the impression that the reaction of the moderators has anything to do with creating a special "protected space" for "mental illness" when it is in accordance with existing site-wide rules and precedents?
(I personally don't understand why that thread has been left up, but that's beside the point.)

telling someone to off themselfes is not free speech

Have you not read the rules page? How did you not see that coming? I don't think mods care about trannies as you seem to think they do.

This imageboard is someone's private property. The Internet is free space, but someone’s website is like someone’s home. If you came to visit someone and started saying something that the house owner does not like, would you also be surprised at the restriction of freedom of speech?

The most typical cited example on free speech infringement is youre not allowed to shout fire in the theater. Free speech does in fact mean by definition you can say anything you want. It just doesnt exist as such in most spaces.

If you read the posts before I never said that the site owner isn't allowed to regulate the rules in order to accomodate for feelings and restrict free speech. It is his right to do so.
I just said (in like 3+ posts already), that I expected this website to be leaning more towards free speech and less towards feelings.
