Only moderation I've seen on here is when I was warned in my pdf dump (which I've since deleted after seeing the complaints and my apology deleted)... while utter nonsense is allowed in coronavirus threads. Intelligent people don't belong here I guess.
BloodCat · 2020-03-23 19:53

Wouldn't most moderation be relatively unseen since it's deletion of posts that break rules? For example, the complaints being a rule 6 violation. It wasn't tackled immediately, but sometimes we catch things within minutes.
Please note that I deleted your apology by accident, I was working on dealing with the complaints (that belong in /q/ instead of soykafting up your thread, which I think was great. I got a lot of files for my library and I really appreciate that.) and it must've hit my queue though...
Once some things are settled IRL, I'll try to get back to my usual moderation in /tech/ though. On a side note, I didn't warn your post. But I do think it should've been moved to /lit/ "S H A R E T H R E A D" because of the nature of the thread.
Drifter · 2020-03-24 02:58
I must say, the rape thread is really making me wonder about this place. I legitimately cannot even figure out what many of the posters in the thread are arguing for.

People who reply to attention whores are fuarrrking retarded.
>It's an imageboard so not really
I wonder what made this imbecile of a swine imply that friendless people don't go around fishing for attention on imageboards. It happens all the time.
>I put people in angsty situations, I physically domineer them, laugh at them directly to their faces. I like watching the face of dread wash over them.
Ditto. None of the rest of that post is true, by the way, it's a very awkward LARP. Not a sliver of self awareness.
Yet there were retards who decided to feed the trolls and soykaf started getting out of hand. You emotional morons share the same guilt. Thank god it was an unimportant thread.
Yet there's even a picture of a frog dressed as the Joker Is this fuarrrking 4chan now? That's the kind of user lainchan wants?
I hope a moderator deletes all posts unrelated to "sharing rape experiences", as it is a thread about "sharing rape experiences", not rape in general, nor naturalism backed up by pseudo science and power resentment.

Honestly, this got me thinking. The reason rape and many other things are illegal is simply because they must be if you want to maintain law of any kind. If you have rape legal, eventually you'll have a large burden of assault and murder charges stemming the subset of the female population that has a family, friends, etc. And many consequences of this.
Hm.

Thank you for making that thread, it was a lot of good content.
Don't think the site is anywhere near unfixable yet but as things stand there is certainly nothing to be excited about. The ridiculous discussions popping up lately is something a lot of inferior quality chans can do better if that's what you're into.
Liet Kynes · 2020-03-27 11:06
Lainchan now has a nazi thread and an "otherkin" thread. Wtf.
Neuromancer · 2020-03-27 11:12
I wouldn't really mind so of the more "out there" threads if the modding was intelligent and consistent. Nazis and people supporting legalising rape are allowed but the pdf dump >>7341 of useful information has to put up with friction. Also my long posts being marked as spam while one word posts like >>7298 don't get marked? The otherkin thread is just fuarrrking weird, why do nazis and furries have such a large overlap?

The Phantom Phreak · 2020-03-27 12:58
Perhaps more disturbing than the proliferation of "low-quality" posts is the apparent decline in "high-quality" posts. Are the "better" posters leaving the site? If so, where are they going? Does anyone here even love Lain anymore?
Nobody special · 2020-03-27 18:02

I mostly use the more technical boards and I simply haven't been wanting to post much lately, preferring to do rather than discuss doing.
As for the softer boards, like /hum/, I've participated in a few discussions lately, but some of them are just going by too quickly for me to care to keep up with them, so I end up not posting at all. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm not so unique in this respect.
The Phantom Phreak · 2020-03-28 14:30
We're now seeing a rise in "go back to Reddit"-style posting, the presence of which I usually use as a litmus test to determine which communities will not be worth my time. I sometimes wonder how many of these posters have actually used Reddit outside of the major subreddits (as opposed to just repeating a catchphrase), as I'm still quite happy with my niche subreddits, whatever one might say about the site on an administrative level. I'm also not sure why they seem to think that posters would get here from Reddit in the first place.
Yu-ichi · 2020-03-28 17:32

When people soykaf on sites they generally talk about the typical person most visible on it.
Frontpage is the site. A small niche subreddit less than 1% of the site use can't stand for the sites quality.
>I'm also not sure why they seem to think that posters would get here from Reddit in the first place.
You can tell people here originating from 4ch and reddit by typing style and memes somewhat reliable. People adopt the style of the place they frequent most to fit in and stick out when they go elsewhere. There's actually a term for this in linguistics and someone did an analysis of crossposting between the biggest websites based on this. Didnt save it otherwise would link.

Its easy to see that the next question would be source? So why not act proactive.
On topic i believe i saw something like that posted here on /hum but the original one was from reddit. It started with tumbl refugees when their site crashed through a ceo change and spurned migration to other sites. They used then said word analysis to spot them on other sites and it made reddit frontpage. Then people became aware that this is a thing and tried it for more general comparisons.
There's however a simpler alternative - google tracks site switching. They know when people swap from one site to another and the statistics are public. It doesnt account people running scriptblockers of course but that wont be the majority.

This is why it's important to avoid slang, jargon,, any opaque or idiosyncratic style. But that doesn't mean that one must always speak by stiff standards; ensure your style is sufficiently universal or universally translatible. This is also why laincode (e.g. the stuff about spilling cafeinated soy-beverages, removing rezzes, or that godawful line about whales and beaches) is bad; aside from not everyone knowing how to decipher it, those who are unaware of it's laincodety, despite being able to decipher it, might start using it directly, causing this sort of bad habit.

Since various groups started raiding other boards to soykaf them up its comfortable to detect the foreign element quickly by lack of in-group language alone.
Its a desirable feature.
As for auto-encoding phrases i can see some value to this too - You can prevent crawlers picking up search strings. This again can prevent campaign trolls finding your thread to soykaf it up.
Armitage · 2020-04-09 13:51
>>7400
I don't think I understand precisely what you're saying, but the risk of your attitude as I perceive it is that it could prevent the development of "local" linguistic culture and all the benefits which potentially come with that. The issue with such anti-tracking measures is that tracking is based on the identification of unique features, so you're essentially destroying uniqueness by necessity. Now, not everything that is unique is valuable, but I think we would agree that some of it is.
>>7521
To add to your contribution, if you think of a certain kind of undesirable poster as essentially just a machine that recognizes keywords and then replicates them like a digital virus (note that every third word/phrase on 4chan comes from a small list of increasingly less meaningful insults, etc.), a filter such as the one lainchan possesses can in theory put a damper on that process because a word like "glitterboy" will not be recognized and consequently will not trigger the old routine.
Agent Smith · 2020-04-09 16:21
There's something strange about those posts - they're extremely negative and sad:
/vent/, suicide, rape, etc.
Or am I skipping all the positive threads?
>>7392
This pepe soykafposting is in my opinion straight from 4chan's /g/ or /p*l/.
I visit /g/ everyday to watch drama while eating popcorn and the style of posting is similar. People on /g/ know lainchan well. But the level of quality on /g/ is so fuarrrking low - no real technology, only consumerist garbage, racist, sexist and other political garbage.
What's interesting /g/ created it's own, strange subculture. It seems "technology" attracts hateful and stupid people, who push their political ideas in the form of "innocent" memes and posts barely being about technology.
Or maybe old 8chan users? /cyber/ there was also flooded by the same kind of garbage, also encouraging genocides and terrorism. The dull atmosphere of lainchan now reminds me those places.

pepe was originally bachelor frog on /b with memes about university live. Later it got adopted more widely. Cant say what its now since im not actively lurking anymore but im certain its not limited to just two boards.
As for the second part you sound 100% sjw. That soykaf doesnt even register unless you have some savior complex or are new. Sexism is a response to diversity hires. Racism to h4 visas in tech jobs. >pepe was originally bachelor frog on /b with memes about university live.
This wasn't what I mean. I'm not talking about how it was in the past, but what I see sitting there.
The same kind of behavior and similar memes. 4chan is so big, subculture differs depending on the board you're on.
>As for the second part you sound 100% sjw.
Sorry for that.
>That soykaf doesnt even register unless you have some savior complex or are new.
>savior complex
Unfortunately yes, I hate myself because of this.
>or are new.
On 4chan, yes. I normally I spent time on my local chan, but it died, so I started sitting on 8chan, because the replacement board was there.
Then 8chan died. I was left with a memory, there's a site called lainchan and that's how I'm here.
8chan's quality was higher, so I could ignore other things, but 4chan? Just what the fuarrrk? That's a massive dumpster fire.
>Sexism is a response to diversity hires. Racism to h4 visas in tech jobs. Everyone hates competition and that expresses itself in outlets like such boards. Who the fuarrrk cares about their whining.
I know this all, I'm not this kind of dumb SJW not to know this. But it isn't making the place better, is it? On 8chan there were both real discussions and brewing soykaf, but on 4chan there's only soykaf.
I just can't imagine how do people sit in there and enjoy their time.
Koos van der Merwe · 2020-04-09 22:03
>>7529
The reason i mentioned bachelor frog is cause i believe there are various groups who have a different understanding of what it represents. For the first group it was something completely innocent. Others who encountered pepe only after it got media attention during election learned it as an alt-right meme. Others might again pick up alt-right memes made with it and interpret it different again. The creators have no control. Thats what makes attributing it to a source difficult. I personally simply avoid anything that might be tainted but not everyone will know or care.
I think quality got worse but not necessarily due to the users alone. oc threads got deleted significantly faster and ahead of porn spam threads for a while. I think many took that as a sign to give up and seek greener pastures. Its why i personally stopped lurking. Its no fun when interesting threads vanish halfway while the junk still fills the catalog.

Moaning about SJWs is equally if not more annoying than SJWs. Yeah you have made some good excuses for irrelevant, ignorant behaviour but it hardly solves the problem of the environment being hateful and just plain bad like the poster described. This is becoming an issue here with the people who like to justify their desires to rape, amongst other issues. /hum/ pretty much is like kicking dead whales down the beach because of this right now, all the tech boards are still quite good though
I've been on image boards for 9 years and it is still very clear that it's particularly bad on 4chan
Yuki Nagato · 2020-04-10 17:16

Among all this lurks roundabout the buddhist solution - decide for yourself its not a problem and stop caring. The thing you have most control of is your frame of mind. What you perceive as a problem is for others entertainment. brewing soykaf is 4chans core. There is no reason to engage with something you dislike. You wont win, you will merely waste your time. Complaining about it on another website is in itself a meta lvl that shouldn't be reached.
Lastly I honestly question if the rape thread here was a legit tard or just bait. Its either way however congruent to my first point - if so many didnt engage with it we wouldn't have it stay so long at the top. Being unable to simply avoid trash and trying to fix everything you see wrong is exactly what keeps these threads alive.
tldr: just stop being trollbait if you wish to improve the situation.

I just come here to soykaf on you guys.
I was the so called "high quality" poster for quite long time in infancy of this soykafty site, now I troll and soykafpost more than I can enjoy.
In essence I would say the decline of this site came with my own start to soykaf up the site, I was the first that started trolling and spamming threads which is why there are few filters that don't enable you to post (which are mostly political or racial in nature, of course)... I wasn't alone in this, but I was the first. They tried to ban me, but there was Tor, there were my neighbors wifis... and I even remember them trying to ban the IP ranges of my ISP and other anons here whining about them being unable to browse or when they thought I was part of arisuchan seething idiots lmao
My anger towards this site started when I saw the proliferation of wrongful moderation, ego tripping of appleglitterboy and his posy and cirlejerk of irc f4ggots. Don't get me wrong, if you have done something worthy of an ego trip I am right beside you, but that guy just bought this site and he thought he was ordained to control and command. I mean you can sense it too, how rotten this community became. Before we had lainzines, people contributed in making radio work... hell there was a sense of community where everyone helped each other.
I don't know... maybe I should have just left and not try to get vengeful and destroy this site. In all seriousness I was part of building this site from its beginnings when kalyx spammed it on /cyber/ and /g/, from creating genuinely helpful posts to contributing to the zine and I am part of its destruction when it comes to trolling and brewing soykaf it to the ground.
It was a good run, but everything needs an ending.

I've been a staff member for almost as long as Lainchan has been around, and Appleman1234 really is a better owner than kalyx ever was. He never begs for donations with pictures of starving African children, doesn't make bad posts I'm aware of, and flaws with the board software actually get fixed. Kalyx actively got in the way of the rest of the staff and he did plenty of other things which are private; unlike Junk, I'm not going to reveal private conversations to make a point.
The #lainchan channel is like kicking dead whales down the beach and I don't use it, but most of those people don't use the imageboard and I don't see why they stay in that channel at all, but at least they're quarantined.
>Don't get me wrong, if you have done something worthy of an ego trip I am right beside you, but that guy just bought this site and he thought he was ordained to control and command.
He bought it, and kalyx sold it. That's what ownership entails. If you want to be mad at anyone, be mad at kalyx for selling it to start with and then wiping everything.
>I mean you can sense it too, how rotten this community became. Before we had lainzines, people contributed in making radio work... hell there was a sense of community where everyone helped each other.
I don't think it's a secret Junk is the reason the Lainzine is dead. I wrote articles for the Lainzine, but it was so slow to release, and then Junk started sabotaging it; now it's basically dead.

Why should I? The moderation is retarded and allows mentally deranged, disgusting content to flourish while putting the kebash on genuine inquiry and investigation. They hold many double-standards which are obvious if you pay any attention to what actually gets moderated. This is, plainly, that moderation is exceedingly done in bad faith. >I don't know... maybe I should have just left and not try to get vengeful and destroy this site. In all seriousness I was part of building this site from its beginnings when kalyx spammed it on /cyber/ and /g/, from creating genuinely helpful posts to contributing to the zine and I am part of its destruction when it comes to trolling and brewing soykaf it to the ground.
literally go fuarrrk yourself.

You're too dumb to create anything new; you just have to settle for trying (and failing) to tear down the things that other people enjoy. What a pathetic existence.

Sites been dead since we split between two boards then when that site got trolled Kalyx dropped the nuke
>Bring back the Kalyx hidden porn stash
Marly Krushkhova · 2020-07-07 23:16
I was going to come here and defend the board. I don't care about frogs but I absolutely do not want this to become a victim to a bunch of nazis and off the wall fetishists as permissive forums tend to do. I'm surprised to say that you guys aren't wrong about this.

> If so, where are they going?
Despite what's not right with the site it's still near the tip top as far as internet forums. We should all do our best to be good citizens here. Go troll and talk about your weird fetishes somewhere else. There's nothing wrong with it and there are plenty of places to do it.
If you do it here and it's end one of those fleeting internet golden ages where a board is just right. I'm not even saying all boards should be lainchan, it's just super right the way it is and we'll only get to enjoy it for so long.
If there is somewhere better I'd like to know.
Lain Iwakura · 2020-07-08 02:28
Lainchan's problem right now is being almost too chill to the point of being sterile. I don't know if this a moderation problem or something else. There's too much proper grammar; it needs about 20% more brewing soykaf or schizoposting or just something to spice things up. I honestly feel like I'm a less corporate version of Reddit or SA sometimes because things are so prim.

The problem is freedom of expression, you can't talk about soykaf, say soykaf, there was a thread where a trans user decided to request a ban and deletion of a poster because muh transphobia, fuarrrk we are here to get some freedoms, this is not fuarrrking reddit, or any other soykaf, we should be able to talk about everything, to fascism and if it works or not, to schizo tor users wanting to download some coffee.
Ein · 2020-07-08 12:45
>>8056
No? The trans user wanted to get some users derezzed but in return their thread got nuked because it read like soykaf-tier bait. What are you babbling about you dolt.

When we say that we would prefer a more libre board, doesn't mean to allow ultra brewing soykaf like 9chan and old 8, but something that can be bearable, god, some banter here and there could work, but all I can see is the extreme control of a userbase, something like a chan is not good, I am going to wirechan and see what i can do there, maybe it can be a good alternative.

Shoo shoo wage slave, soykaf chan + they don't even allow tor posting.

Enjoy your tor posting without being to actually REALLY post something, placebo, as it will mean nothing posting with tor, as you can't say anything controverse.

Aw, I guess you'll have to go somewhere else for your cheese pizza and fascism. :(

I don't know what the quality is in the programming threads, but every other subject is mostly just LARP and the users feel like they're underage tryhards. I like how chill the site is but I rarely see anything of substance. The thoughts of people here are the same thoughts as every other mainstream site, subscribing to this or that common narrative.
Also the identity politics and "the news" are slowly hijacking conversation into a comment section to social media.

That pic if full of crap. So when your thing that you always liked is taken over by deceitful manipulators with an agenda who care nothing for it and draw in consumers instead of geeks, you're supposed to "find something else" what if I really liked that thing and it meant everything to me? So I am only supposed to like things that can't sell, since everything vaguely monetizable has been taken over by crooks and their groupies and slowly chewed up until nothing is left?
This is such a disgusting attitude. It's nothing by the atomized braindead mindset of modern consumerism
>Oh your partner has an issue. Just leave your partner and find one without problems lol
>Oh your thing has broken. Just buy another thing instead of fixing the one that broke lol
>Oh your city is awful. Just move to a better city lol
And then the same idiot tells the guy he's reproaching "I find you annoying" maybe he should've just "ignored it" or left the environment altogether if he didn't like the grumpy old fart.
