Micromanaging conversations will kill this site.

Special Agent Bob · 2020-02-25 02:44
(Link to thread in the screeenshot: https://www.lainchan.org/lit/res/2708.html) This sort of micromanaging of conversations will kill this site. I would ask the mod in question to stop doing this, and instead allow conversations to flow naturally. To be blunt, mod in question, your thought process that led to these warnings completely baffles me. No-one wants to put effort into a conversation that could be locked on a whim. You will have a ghost town on your hands. I don't want that. You don't want that. Consider this to be friendly constructive criticism from a very long-time user who doesn't want to see this place fade into obscurity.

Damn this site has some good moderation

>>6978 Let me quotes some relevant rules for you https://lainchan.org/rules.html 1. If you break the rules we will delete your post. Do it repeatedly and you'll be derezzed. 3. Always argue in good faith and avoid using personal attacks. 11. Read the rules again. At least 3 times. I'm not the mod who warned those posts but those could be good elaborate ones if these lainons put some effort in writing them. Warning seems like the best solution to remind them to elaborate and have some higher standards. Lainchan is an image board, a place where you can have informed and fruitful communication. Writing a train or wagon of thought isn't the level of debate we aim for the board. As for the threat of thread locking/deletion, it's a common effort. If everyone participating in a thread can't raise the level of communication then it shouldn't exist, or at least not on lainchan. Some other platform would suit those posters better.

>>7295 We are not a CORPORATION. Maybe one someday later, when I or others enable lainons to purchase stickers and other consumables, we will have to register as a business or a charity, but currently we are not a CORPORATION. Lainchan doesn't have customers, just users and soykafposters. We also don't have a MOTTO, we should probably have a MOTTO. Feel free to suggest MOTTOs in this thread. >>6978 It won't kill the site, it just is warnings for people to make better posts next time. People will put what effort that want to put in when they want to. I wish they would elaborate on what and why instead posting one liners, which don't communicate their implicit reasoning and associations with why they typed that one liner. Warning low quality posts, allows future posts by those and other posts to be higher quality in future, by communicating information on how to make a better post instead of straight up deleting the post. First people said deletion was unfair, despite rule 1. Then people said warning and banning with red warnings was unfair. Then people said just warning with red warnings was unfair. Now you say blue warnings that are just warnings are unfair and will kill the site. If you really don't like seeing the blue warnings you can always hide using User CSS. I try only warn occasionally, instead of every thread, every second post or third post, because that is micromanagement. I wasn't aware this place was not in obscurity. I don't think this will be a ghost town. But if the userbase wants to pretend to be ghosts, then this is just another thing I will tolerate, whilst hoping the userbase becomes the best people that they can be.
Mario Rossi · 2020-03-20 11:35
>>7305 >then this is just another thing I will tolerate whilst hoping the userbase becomes the best people that they can be. And there's the big red flag. That phrasing reeks of a superiority complex run amok. Every time I've seen a discussion community about to become a ghost town, it's because that attitude became the norm among the operator(s). This is an attitude that diminishes a userbase. It can't grow it, and it can't maintain it. What makes a discussion fun, whether it's on a forum or IRL, is when there's free-flowing and meandering conversation on a variety of interesting topics. This is what you completely fail to understand. Posting on lainchan right now feels like I'm filing my taxes. There is nothing fun about it. It feels like a bureaucracy-fettered chore. I need to re-read every word of my post to make sure it doesn't violate some arbitrary topic rule or deviate in any way from the designated and approved topic of conversation. Time to head for greener pastures. Heck, maybe time to make some greener pastures.

They have no real reason of doing this but they do. I've seen it happen within the last week or so here as I've been posting consistently for a month and it happens consistently. 4ch@n it's about money, here autism. Other places, I don't even know. If they're cool they'd allow it but the only ones that do are very dead sites. How can they advertise when sites that have money to advertise to their traffic won't let them? That's THEIR business place, so they have metaphorical, near literal, no soliciting signs all over. Including here. Don't bother making a new imageboard. You'll either have zero money or zero people will let you advertise it in front of those that do have the cash. You have to wait for a site to die, then people will come looking for you. I'm only here because 8 got rekt and the boards I used never came back and the 'shelters' are so far away from one another that it's too dead to use when 8 was slow to begin with.
Joe Bloggs · 2020-03-22 07:00
>>7310 You don't get it. The lainchan staff doesn't care if people leave because having a large userbase isn't the point. The point is to have a community full of smart people who are capable of having consistently quality discussions, and in order to have that you need to gatekeep. >>7312 You _sound_ like someone who came here because 8gag died.

>>7465 It died, actual idiot. My boards are gone as it is now 8kun and no longer 8chan as cloudflare decided to try to control the Internet, as in censor it. I'm staying here because it's of the more populated chans and unlike 4chan it doesn't range ban for shekels like Hiro has been doing for years. He's literally rich for a reason. Don't like it? >>7312 There are entire threads here dedicated to other chans. If you had bothered to look at even just the catalogs of the boards here, you would have seen that. It's not that hard. Search those pages for the relevant keywords. If you don't know how to do that, or if you don't know the relevant keywords, you know to find out. Everybody and their grandmother knows how to find out. Literally the only rule about talking about chans is to not whine about other places. As far as curbing chan advertising, I think the way it's done on lainchan is great, because there's a thread with many, many other chans, and some discussion about them; because they're in one place, I'm not distracted by the mere existence of whatever particular chan someone things is worth people's attention---unless I'm specifically looking for other chans, in which case, it's great, because I don't have to scour the whole internet, or even the whole of this chan, just to find other chans. >>7468 >I'm so autistic I think it's impossible to make something attractive to only some people I'm having lots of fun, thank you very much. I hope you either well-adjust to the local culture. Or, leave. I don't really care either way, and I don't think most regulars care---if they cared, they would have adjust the local culture. Although, there are some minor points that I might prefer changed, such as the perception that all one-liners are poor-quality; there are many poor-quality one-liners, but some one-liners are good-quality, and fewer one-liners are great-quality. >Don't like it? Ban capitalism. As a motto for lainchan, it would convey an important part of the local culture, but it's a bit too general, and it mentions a highly ``politicized'' term (which would attract posters that would clash with the local culture). I think the motto would have to convey something about how the posts are technical and detailed without obscuring it's essence. It should also be something that doesn't sound too cool, otherwise we'll attract more ``edginess.'' Paraphrasing SEL: >There are far too many nonsense-spouting idiots who think their angst is revolution.
Delilah · 2020-04-24 20:57
>>7470 But it does, if only new people complain they'll either abide by lainchan's style of posting or they'll leave.

I support the moderation here even if it's more intrusive than what I might think I like on a philosophical level. There is no shortage of romper room style chans out there and they're all overrun with paedos, absolutely insane conspiracy theorists, paid trolls, and neo-nazis. I already feel that nazis are trying to normalize themselves here as much as possible and I don't feel that it's an accident. I dig the whole free speech thing but I can't argue that the hands-on moderation on this board has produced a superior experience that I can't find on any other imageboards.
Loin · 2020-07-08 07:29
>>7692 God, the memery is a soul of a chan, its should be able to flow, or this chan will fuarrrking die.

>>7310 >There is nothing fun about it. Being on topic is fun for me and many others. >>7692 Then go make a new image board or go back to an older one. People go to lainchan because it has a fairly large community and then they ignore why it has a community and proceed to cry about how it's not enough like the image boards they came from or would have created themselves. >>8058 There is definitely censorship on lainchan, but the mods do an excellent job of limiting the censorship to obscenity, trolling, and off topic content. I respect websites that are platforms for free speech, but not every website needs to be a platform for free speech.
William Holtzer · 2020-07-08 08:08
>>7312 >Don't bother making a new imageboard. You'll either have zero money or zero people will let you advertise it in front of those that do have the cash. What are you talking about? lainchan had two different image boards linked at the navigation bar adjacent to the board links. This was for at least a year, probably several. >How can they advertise when sites that have money to advertise to their traffic won't let them? It's been a while, but IIRC previous management of lainchan bought an actual add on 4chan.
Pris · 2020-07-08 08:23
And really, what is it that makes people so angry when they get a warning? Corrective behavior is a good thing. Whenever you join any kind of community you will inevitably fail to meet the expectations of the group in some way. This is common at work or in school. A correction isn't a personal attack, it's a way of letting you join in with everyone else. Treating a correction as a personal attack or responding to a correction by purposely doing the wrong thing on purpose to show everyone you can do it is what crazy immature people do. What kind of whack job goes into a group, commits a faux pas, gets told what they're doing wrong, and responds by telling the existing community their values are wrong?
Joe Bloggs · 2020-09-08 13:26
I was only annoyed when I had a bunch of posts deleted in a thread a while ago. A whole chunk of the conversation was culled because it was getting heated, so I don't know if my posts were deleted on their own merit. This kind of topic happens sometimes especially since these topic (sadly) have become so ubiquitous on the internet that it's impossible to avoid them unless you ban the topics completely. If there's a conversation and people are fighting, remove the gratuitous posts, issue a warning to the aggressive users, and make a mod post to stop the fight. Nuking a whole conversation like that is poor moderation. The only other way to stop this is to block the topics. I'm fine with that, but if you do allow the topics to be discussed you should allow some tension. They are topics that by their very nature create tension since they challenge the definitions of truth.
