Post blocked under "Please make a better post"?
Damon, Disaffected · 2025-01-08 12:33
I was hoping for some insight into why my attempt at posting a thread on /hum/ about ending friendships was blocked with the message "Please make a better post"? It didn't seem to me that it contained any of the usual errors which might prompt so curt a dismissal as this, not being political, filled with invective, or (I hope) entirely nonsensical. Perhaps my style is, uh, a bit unusual and elevated, but I put my heart and mind into that post and I'd like that to be respected. I suspect an overzealous filter. Also, if it's some kind of catch-all filter aimed against that poster who keeps ranting about women, etc., I'm not that poster and the post didn't contain content of that kind. Kind of disheartening, really...Or maybe I'm just off my rocker and trash goes in the trash. You tell me! But if you're going to demand gold at least help us poor apprentices with the transmutation.

Are you guys busy or is this...stonewalling? I wonder whether you recognize how much this "is like kicking dead whales down the beach" for those of us who possess neither power nor an explanation.

not a mod so this is just what I think based on posting here
there's some words and maybe phrases that flag the filter. If you want, repost the post but remove all buzzwords/alter spellings perhaps and it will probably get through. Filter is kinda weird here, nigger is allowed, some words in more common/polite usage aren't.

Well, yes, friendly poster, that is of course the practical solution to the problem. But I made this thread to bring attention to the existence of this strange message and to the idea that maybe an entirely opaque block of this sort that can potentially catch legitimate posts in its dragnet might not be such a good thing for lainchan. Being rebuffed so brusquely is bewildering and obnoxious following a thoughtful drafting process and, depending on how often this mysterious filter is triggered, it may serve to drive users away from the site or cause them to lose confidence in posting. (Maybe not likely but my point is that since we can't understand it as users we really don't know)
I think the users have a right to some explanation of the nature and purpose of this filter, which seems intentionally and uncharacteristically nontransparent. I also want to know that the powers that be have made sure the triggers of the filter are, in fact, not overbroad and not likely to cause it to eat otherwise desirable posts.

I don't like this /q/ thread on principle probably because it is the 7th time I have seen a /q/ thread like it , that block message only shows up if you use any phrase that rhymes with bloomers or tumours.
The filter isn't overzealous, but I am sure you will argue for its removal or adjustment until it becomes an even more complicated regular expression or custom filter.
Lainchan isn't transparent, as much as you want it to be.
As for the are we busy ? or stonewalling ? We are busy and understaffed. Also as I said earlier I don't like threads like this because they basically amount to why is my precious post which I spent hours writing but didn't put in a text file blocked, or please give me all the filter rules so I can program my posting bot to spam CP / etc.
E.g. The main reason we don't provide a list of keywords which are blocked is to prevent spam.

Well, I do appreciate your getting back to me, especially if this kind of thread bothers you so much, and I do feel for you guys having to deal with the never-ending CP spam.
Now that I know what triggers it I can begin to see the sense in its existence, but when you have a long post (I did save the text file btw) and you're having to blindly guess at both the language preferences of the staff and the form of implementation (at this point posts could go through some AI thing for all the casual user knows) you feel less like hunting the arbitrary rule and more like complaining or, you know, just leaving instead. (In this last respect the filter may well be working as intended given the -oumer scourge.)
For reference, the offending phrase appeared in my post as part of a claim I was making about how easily thoughtful expressions can be dismissed with a variation on [offending phrase], so it is somewhat ironic that its inclusion caused my post to be dismissed in turn. I take it as self-evident that an edge case like this was not what the filter was built to block.
I'll swallow the rest of what I'm thinking since the issue is resolved. Good luck, apple guy. Don't let cynicism overwhelm you. Thanks again for responding in spite of your distaste

This was never a preference thing, this was a filter I inherited and kept, 4 out of 7 previous /q/ threads made the same argument, that they were just saying the phrase as a reference or as irony or as tongue in check.
If you want leave then just leave, I can't stop you. Posts currently don't go through any AI thing. Feel free to make your post without the reference or don't, it is your choice.
If you want to stay, that is great too, and I wish you the best on your life's journey and beginning and end friendships as you see fit.

Wait just a minute now. You say you "inherited" this filter and your posts don't read like the old Appleman. Are you a different guy from the guy who used to run this site? I never heard about a change in administration, but it has been years since I posted here regularly.

Bruh, there are two different Applemen in this very thread. One reads like he struggles with English a bit and the other does not. I am too paranoid for this. What is happening? How many guys are there in the one trench coat?
John Rain · 2025-03-10 22:04
Hi. What's wrong with my post?
Demeere · 2025-03-15 11:17
probably the word about old folks. hard to directly explain because I need to learn to make better posts, but people who go boom
Lorus · 2025-04-02 20:08

The word after US and before the colon.
In addition your post is also a Rule 4 violation because you don't elaborate on why you say what you say and what your sources are.
