I found this place recently, i am the new of user if you will. and it feels like walking around in a graveyard. I love lain. But i seem to be late to the party. Everybody talks about how things used to be great, and how things used to exist. so where did those things go? where did everybody else go? what happened?
i always liked to believe the people saying soykaf like "the internet is just a couple sites now" are closeminded and lazy, and that there are sites out there brimming with community. but im finding it hard to see where the sites are anymore.

>so where did those things go? where did everybody else go? what happened?
people moved along with life and other things, most communities segregated and became a set of private groups (and chat groups).
the last few forums which are more active are slowly dying. Since people who write technical things prefer to do it publicly for the outcome ($$$, recognition) or are too afraid of the law to keep it going (cost X benefit analysis).
lots of people have families now, small kids and other things which strange their free time, so you may just get a message here and there from them. And the new generation don't even enjoy this "kind" of communication, usually you will see them at twitch or any other stream platform.
I would recommend hang around image boards until you are invited to some of these groups, more you interact more you can show your personality and how much you can add to these communities before you are invited. Also mailing lists still a thing.

not OP, but given how much quality did posts and discussions had over here in the past, i think for me it's kinda hard to find the balance between quality and quantity. A lot of times i just remain lurking because i don't feel like what i have to say is good enough to be part of the convo, or lacks arguments to be able to defend my opinion later on

I hate to say it but discord is where a lot of communities that would otherwise be independent forums are. There's no way around it for me, if I want to play a game like Giants Citizen Kabuto with other people I have to join the Giants Citizen Kabuto Discord to see when people are playing and perhaps find help to install the community patch.
That same experience is repeated 100 times over for me. I'd love to use forums or imageboards, I prefer them. But if there's no one to use them with I can't really do anything about it.
The communities still exist, they just exist on corporate platforms unfortunately. Discord is the new IRC. Avoid whenever you can but at this point I also wouldn't isolate myself from real hobby communities just because they are on discord.

Honestly, fuarrrk that soykaf. I tried to years ago, but I could not stand it. Outside the occasional post like this one, I don’t "socialise" online anymore. People I know don’t even use Discord or have "internet friends" either. It’s all tiktok, youtube, whatsapp/messenger/telegram/signal and linkedin for most people nowadays. Nobody use X and some dudes may use twitch.
It’s all fine, I do hope that the coming energy crisis kill "social network" tho

I dont think this place is dead, at all. It just has a slower pace. And thats not a bad thing at all, having slower discussions is healthier for an enviroment like this, in a way.
Answering your question OP, I really dont know. All I know is I refurs to give in to social media.

Discord is a leach on the contemporary social experience. It doesnt try to distrupt the old strucutre of internet chat like other platforms did, but it encapsulates both real-life friendgroups and online communities in a closed structure, while breeding a culture of insecure control freaks. If you want to see old-school internet culture still alive, you could have a look at some of the traditional African fora, esp. Nairaland. The quality seems to vary a lot between its boards (the agriculture board is frequently interesting, the programming one is hilariously awful), but its nowhere near dead.

I have heard of this place on rdrama and now here. How popular is it. I just a tourist thoughie.
About imageboards and the 'old' internet, I think they still exist just not how they used to. The newcomer of course is the sharty but there is also dvack/2chan. 4chan exists too of course and isn't anywhere close to dying.

kiwifarms, imo it's the actual cyberpunk forums. it's operator Joshua Connor Moon constantly works hard to protect the forum from hostile forces, be it legal or technical.

Wild, I came here to mention Kiwi Farms too. Xenforo is surprisingly nice.

fuarrrk you and your stalking and harassment platform. Your kind is part of what's wrong with the modern day internet.

Please say what's better, not just that it's bad.
I find browsing Kiwi Farms mentally unhealthy, because it's about reacting to things, and not even in a joyful way, plus severe groupthink towards life denial in some respects, but I only knew about twitter before I read a great deal of it as a youth, so I'm thankful it exists to at least expose people to something beyond the normal peoplephere.
I think the better alternative to all of this is private groups

Hit the nail on the head IMO. These kinds of places are to meet people, not to cultivate ones self or relationships, because people only continue actions when they get rewards back, and places like this where you're not communicating with the same people over and over recognizably make you into a single product, rather than a brand, so flash is rewarded over substance.

they're all still there, just seemingly eclipsed by the giants of big tech. what was once a place of myriad sites for niche interests became 4 sites for all interests.
one of my favorite """old internet""" communities to be a part of is the fine folks over at modarchive. it's just a little place for people from all over the world to connect of share information and resources about one very specific interest: namely, tracker modules
