How to Migrate from Twitter to Mastodon

Jens Hansen · 2023-07-02 12:17
Are you planning to move Lainchan from Twitter to Mastodon? (or other Fediverse) > Twitter has undergone significant changes in its staffing, policies, and features in recent times. You may have joined this social network for its wide reach and freedom to share your opinions. However, the recent changes in user verification procedures and policy may lead you to consider using alternative platforms like Mastodon. In this article, we will guide you on how to sync and migrate from Twitter to Mastodon to gain more control over your content. https://techcult.com/how-to-migrate-from-twitter-to-mastodon/

>>11850 mastodon would be fine if every other server using it didn't engage in culture wars. but one can just host their own and at that point, hosting mastodon is resource heavy, so you may as well just use pleroma/akkoma/literally anything else
Appleman1234 · 2023-07-02 19:41
>>11847 Possibly, however there are several issues with this. The only usecases for the Lainchan twitter are the following 1. Sending third party messages to non individuals when IRC, Mumble, and the boards are down. This use case is made not usable with the latest change requiring everyone to have a twitter account to view content on Twitter, but hopefully they will remove that change soon. 2. Sending Lainchan Birthday and Christmas messages to the Lainchan Twitter coummunity to encourage people to participate on the boards, Mumble, IRC, other community stuff. This use case is still possible, however it wouldn't be possible if we switched to Mastadon/ Fediverse. (Because most of the Lainchan twitter community isn't on the Fediverse yet). 3. Trying to engage with the Lainchan Twitter or the Lain Twitter or other Imageboard Twitter communities on Twitter,. E.g. This use case used to happen more historically, but isn't focused on during my tenure. (Because most of these twitter communities are not on the Fediverse yet). Given the current low usage of these usecases , I am not sure if it makes sense to migrate to Mastadon / the Fediverse yet. As for hosting Fediverse as a service, as >>11851 says it is pretty resource heavy and several other Lainons currently host various pleroma instances etc, so we wouldn't do this unless there was sufficient demand, as well as additional staff to help with upkeep and moderation.

>>11853 This is my admin reply: > First point will most likely not really change. Twitter is kinda evil, and is becoming more evil by the day. Now with those stupid rate limits. You can achieve more spread of your content on fediverse by using hashtags. Also add mastodon relays to your instance. Depending on their requirements they could also use kbin. > Ps. There is also an app called PixelFed on the fediverse for posting images just like Instagram basically

>>11853 >Because most of the Lainchan twitter community isn't on the Fediverse yet). I wonder how many lains are in the fediverse, but not on twitter? I have a mastodon account but I've never used Twitter.

>>11847 Just went onto that site and all I see is left wing politics. What's the difference between that and twitter?
William Holtzer · 2024-06-17 12:31
>>12028 there's right wing instances too. the difference is that it uses the client-server structure of the old web, think personal e-mail servers, XMPP, and game servers. except all the hosts are federated so you get posts from the rest of the "fediverse", and instances federate with each other based on shared ideology. one might call it a rhizome.

last I used mastodon it was basically impossible to avoid the mass of anime porn and that is why I quit it
Morpheus · 2024-07-10 18:56
Mastodon is, in essense, the same soykaf as Twitter, but with better privacy policies. It may have a somewhat ""inocent"" userbase now, but it's just a matter of time before it becomes a giant cesspool of piss, just like Tumblr or Discord. The fact that it's decentralized changes pratically nothing in the way it's used.
Turner · 2024-07-26 11:15
>>12775 I'm not sure it has better privacy policies. Data is kept with your individual, usually volunteer provider who is probably *harder* to keep accountable than Twitter. Not to mention much more likely to have bad security practices.
Marly Krushkhova · 2024-07-28 11:36
>>12787 sure, but individually you don't need to directly interact with except your own chosen instance. A good instance will be good, better than you can probably get at X, a bad instance way worse. Pick a good one!
