How to make a self-governed webite or forum?

Liet Kynes · 2023-03-12 04:15
(reposting from another chan as I think this place is a better fit for discussion) I'm playing with the idea of making a sort of forum or site, mainly for the purpose of memes, but I want the users to have total freedom over its content. Meaning, I want *actual* decentralization; not just a publicity slogan for traction. No authorities if possible who'd make it easy for the site to become extremely biased because of power-hungry jannies, but I also don't want illegal soykaf like cp and stuff shared on it, so I'm already at a standstill on that point. I don't want to enforce rules, either; anything should go as long as it won't get me imprisoned. But then again, the law is corrupt and I would have to face the backlash for whatever criminal soykaf "my" users (not really "my" users, as I want the site to be self-governed and therefore I could abdicate responsibility, but I doubt this works on legal grounds) might do. I don't want to become another Josh from Kiwifarms who get's fuarrrked simply for advocating for free speech, and having to face the repercussions for something he himself didn't even commit. It's even worse for me because I live in Germany and natsoc imagery for example gets you time here; the censorship is insane. Would you guys have any examples or advice for me? What the fuarrrk should I do? The idea maybe being soykaf aside, how would I go about creating a decentralized and self-governed system for content creation without being a fuarrrking lawyer? I'm just a loser neet in his mom's basement with a lot of free time on his hands. I'm not prepared to become a martyr just because I want to share silly little memes with my online friends.

It's been done, it's called 8-kun (no idea if lainchan blocks that word) and it is like kicking dead whales down the beach. My advice is to not bother. If you want to share silly little memes with your online friends just do that instead.

>>11673 I specifically said "my idea being soykaf aside" for a reason. i did not ask if someone did whatever i want to do already; you're precisely the kind that i didn't want to attract with my post and you're part of the problem in the programming sphere. someone asks x question and you answer it with some demoralizing gibberish, completely misinterpreting or maybe even purposely misunderstanding the question or point of the post or question. have a nice day.

>>11674 i don't think that the point is to demoralize you by saying not to bother, i think the point is that you don't seem to have fully thought through what it means to have a "self-governing" website, or if such a thing actually even exists. no janitors, no mods, no rule enforcement, no governing. you can't have a self-governed community if there's no tools or reasons to govern themselves, that's called anarchy. you also cannot simply "abdicate responsibility" because you would be hosting this platform for people to post on. if you are not willing to sink the resources, time and thought into a project to ensure its legality and success you probably shouldn't begin it. i won't make any pretense by hazarding a guess at your intentions, they might be very good, but you can very easily land yourself in trouble by starting a website and neglecting its upkeep from that point forward. many sysadmins and domain holders have thought they'd be fine, many have been wrong. if moot gets visited by the fbi you will too, inevitably, for the same reasons, in whatever the equivalent is in your country.

>>11671 I think people make too much of a deal out of self-governance and freedom from censorship and I don't think it's really that important. If you don't like the rules of a given site, just go to an alternative or better yet found your own! Being online has taught me one thing: sometimes limitations on a persons freedom are both inevitable and make sense. First of all, all communities have their unwritten rules and biases. It's what holds communities together and separates them out from others. Even if you were to create an anarchic site that is decentralized, you'd still get unsaid rules that dictate what is and is not acceptable behavior. So it's all rather pointless and undesirable. If you create a site without annoying jannies and overbearing admin, you'll end up being flooded by cp fapping pedos and child molesters or jihadis shearing decapitation videos or and animal crush porn or a mix of all three. I can tell you, once you see that soykaf you can't unsee it no matter how good and innocent your intentions might have been. The better thing to do is just create a site that has a rule set, administration, and community that is to your liking and just work on building and growing that community.

I think you should forget about hard decentralization and create a community with no rules. Leave yourself technically in charge and commit publicly to moderating enough to keep it 100% legal but no more. You can have almost the community you're talking about right away, and if it doesn't work out you'll learn about how to do it better the next time around, way more than you would from lainons I'm not the first person to point this out but I'm not sure what you mean by "self-governed" - to me it means that users actually have some meaningful level of input into the policies/enforcement/culture of a site and that is what interests me - but it sounds like maybe you mean *no* governance. Personally I would expect to see pointless trash-talking and meaningless off-topic content everywhere, and that does not interest me at all, but nobody is forcing me to use your site :) Rules, filtering, and exclusion are tools for keeping a site meaningful and interesting, but that's not to say they're the only ones. Definitely see Freenet's "web of trust" for a decentralized example
