Have we really stooped to just outright deleting threads that are still being discussed and replied to just because a mod doesn't like where it is going? Last post in the thread was a person threatening to quit lainchan because he got derezzed for posting his opinion, and now I see the entire weeks-old thread has been deleted. This is ridiculous, and at this point I am starting to feel like maybe he was right and this place really has went downhill more than I previously though. A great thing about lainchan was the freedom to discuss topics without overzealous moderation, and that is now being taken from us. How do you people justify deleting an entire thread like that? People were still discussing things, and without the freedom to discuss things there will never be growth or improvement. Do you think your 'vision' for what you think the site should about be is more important than allowing the users themselves to decide what is 'right' or not for the community? Yes, the thread was starting to devolve into political soykaf, but isn't that something the users should work out, in a natural and organic way, for themselves? As opposed to having conversation curtailed to whatever the mod's fancy is?? At that point we may as well be reddit.
Give it whatever excuse you want, but what I just witnessed is straight-up censorship and it is not cool. At all. Inb4 this thread is deleted too.

Are you referring to my deletion of the guy bitching about my decision to delete his post for not posting in good faith and not elaborating on what I could only assume as political brewing soykaf?
Because I don't tolerate it from anyone. We have rules to mitigate political soykaf flinging. After I deleted his initial post, the two were able to have a productive conversation about these alleged politics.
So, after breaking rules 3 and 4.
>Rule 3. Always argue in good faith and avoid using personal attacks.
>Rule 4. You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.
He proceeded to break rule 6.
>Rule 6. Do not whine and cry about 8chan, lainchan.jp, "quality", "invasions", "new users", mods, bans, or kalyx outside of /q/.
Despite the fact that I explicitly told him to bring it to /q/. I didn't ban him, in either situation, I did give him a warning (in the form of a 0s ban), in which I told him I would ban him if he did continue to break the rules. I genuinely want accountability here if someone thinks I am overstepping. You really do need to make sure, this is a two-way street. Why do you think we even have a /q/ board that we only deleted things in extreme circumstances, and we're very, very open about what happens and why.
The point is: I do not care about polemics destroying the community. You're talking about censorship. I try hard to keep my bias out of deletions, we have discussions when we feel that we may have some form of bias. I just try to delete soykafposts and other rule breaking posts. Just because I hit your side for the first time in a long time, it doesn't mean I am trying to censor you, your ideologically similar friend, or whatever it was.
>Yes, the thread was starting to devolve into political soykaf, but isn't that something the users should work out, in a natural and organic way, for themselves
You must have not seen the previous posts, because those types of posts never go anywhere outside of mocking soyjak soykafposts and calling eachother names. Everytime I clear out excessively agressive political soykafposts, the conversations go better.
More importantly: I did not delete any threads except some recently posted ones advertising cp, so if you could tell me which thread it was, I'll gladly look into the logs and contact who did it and inform them of your post, if they don't come across it by themselves.
>Give it whatever excuse you want, but what I just witnessed is straight-up censorship and it is not cool. At all. Inb4 this thread is deleted too.
I can say something interesting about this: It is funny as hell to see how meta this got though. You're complaining about gatekeeping in /q/. While making it impossible for there to be an "excuse". You don't want to hear "the other side", the one you've created. Instead of "us", you create an "us vs them" conversation. If nothing is good enough, leave. The quality of this site has an ebb-and-flow of retards coming and going.
I posted with my name because I am writing for myself and not the staff as a whole.

I can't tell if you are talking about the same thread or not but I think you are talking about a different one. But if you are, the entire thread is now gone, so someone took it upon themselves to purge the entire discussion from lainchan. The thread I am referring to was the thread on /r/ about people who use lainchan who aren't really into the culture but just coming here as a replacement for 4chan et cetera, and what it means for us. General meta stuff, but it was getting interesting, one could argue it had gotten off-topic with the political soykaf but since topics like these are often interrelated I didn't see much of an issue with it (not to mention the thread being on fuarrrking /r/..) It was something I think the community needed a chance to discuss, I didn't post it on /q/ because I didn't think there was much in the way of a solution but I thought it should be discussed nonetheless, anyways it had certainly started to devolve into political soykaf but not so much that it needed to be outright deleted, people were still arguing in good faith, so the decision to delete the entire thread with zero reasoning seems to me like the boneheaded decision of a mod who didn't like the topics being discussed or the way it was going and wanted to impose his/her will on the rest of lainchan. And that is wrong.
It almost seems to me like a mod derezzed the lain I mentioned previously because their post struck a note with them, when in reality they didn't say anything 'wrong' outside of expressing their opinion, and then, in an effort to cover their tracks after the derezzed user made a reply, nuked the entire thread.
Also, thank you for your earnest reply. I like to try to have faith in you people but experiences like this really make me question it.

Reminder:
If you break the rules we will delete your post. Do it repeatedly and you'll be derezzed.
Thread was a Rule 3 / 4 violating OP masquerading as a mock /q/ thread in /r/ by an OP that should have lurked more in the first place.
I tried to rerail the thread by asking OP to clarify what they meant by belong and the emotional expectations / dissonance regarding who they thing belongs and doesn't.
My attempt to rerail the discussion was ignored, neither OP nor other lainons bothered to elaborate and clarify their positions.
Instead reply focus on Christianity, alt right christiany , jews , racism and supposed tolerance and acceptance for racism, all the while continuing to beak Rule 6.
The thread had devolved into bad faith insults and tribalism, as most discussions about tribes and identify do when people don't want focus on having the discussion and want to just shout their own tribal identity from the rooftoops and do the Purple vs Green we must fight from Babylon 5.
>>Have we really stooped to just outright deleting threads that are still being discussed and replied to just because a mod doesn't like where it is going?
That isn't the reason it was deleted, so no I don't think so, but then again that sentiment does apply particualry to other threads that violate the rules below
Do not spam or advertise unrelated content.
Do not post child pornography or questionable 2D/3DCG/3DPG sexual depictions of children. This includes "child models".
If you must post it, spoiler any NSFW content and make sure it's relevant to the discussion.
If you are starting to feel like that lainon is right and you want to leave or threaten to leave, then please do so, nobody is stopping you.
Lainchan has always have moderation, though we are not that zealous about it. Freedom to discuss topics without moderation was never something ratified.
Pro tips say
The mods are not on powertrips, they are friendly and are trying to ensure the quality of lainchan, not belittle your ideas.
Lainchan is a place to have your voice heard but not a place for you to drown out others' voices.
>> How do you people justify deleting an entire thread like that?
If you break the rules we will delete your post. Do it repeatedly and you'll be derezzed.
>>People were still discussing things, and without the freedom to discuss things there will never be growth or improvement.
People can still discuss things, nothing is stopping them discussing things in a new thread.
>> Do you think your 'vision' for what you think the site should about be is more important than allowing the users themselves to decide what is 'right' or not for the community?
This question is ridiculous, considering I have put my vision on hold since I have been running the place, instead allowing the community to decide what they want Lainchan to be, as per What is the purpose of Lainchan ? answer in the the FAQ, https://lainchan.org/faq.html .
>> Yes, the thread was starting to devolve into political soykaf, but isn't that something the users should work out, in a natural and organic way, for themselves?
No, it isn't, most threads that devolve into political soykaf and name calling, either are quickly deleted for derailing and violating Rule 3, Rule 4, Rule 6 and Rule 7, or are mopped (where offending posts are deleted and the thread left in place) and monitored for the next few weeks or are iceboxed (left alone with the hope they will die out or reach post limit), until ignore rule violations occur into order to fast track the deletion of the thread.
>> As opposed to having conversation curtailed to whatever the mod's fancy is??
Conversation isn't curtailing, nothing is stopping people from making another thread.
>>so the decision to delete the entire thread with zero reasoning seems to me like the boneheaded decision of a mod who didn't like the topics being discussed or the way it was going and wanted to impose his/her will on the rest of lainchan. And that is wrong.
There was reasoning, but your seems or assumption is incorrect, so please continue to call me a bonehead and incorrecty assume censorship rather than just deletion of the thread for Rule 3, 4 , 6 violations.
The same mod that gave the warning, didn't cover their tracks, I deleted the thread, there is no attempted cover up conspiracy here.

I understand how you feel and I know it can be hard because there is an obvious barrier. I genuinely do care about this community and would rather quit than do anything to intentionally harm it. To put things into perspective: Lainchan has been my most visited website for nearly a decade now.
We all try to be as transparent as possible, without making it easy for certain spammers to get through. This creates problems that we have been trying to solve for quite some time. This is the point of /q/. That's why I always try to tell people to please go to /q/ and we can discuss it if they disagree, especially when I can see that there could be a perceived bias. This is why I want to make sure everyone can call me out if they think there is bullshit. I could be entirely unaware of my own bullshit and I need people to call me out on it. Not in IRC though. #lainchan is a different beast -- Never take anything there seriously, but I digress, everywhere else, it is important to me.

fwiw the lainchan is the only online community I've frequented for years and the high quality of moderation is a big reason for that. thanks for all the work you guys put in.
not op, ofc.

I had mostly typed out a reply before but I type them in a text editor and I lost it.. But suffice to say, I think the proper thing to have done would be to first make a modpost and tell us the thread would be deleted if it didnt get back on track. The decision to just randomly ban somelain for replying to another post with their opinion, which may have been opinionated but was not inherently 'wrong', and in the process potentially alienating a long-time user, and then outright deleting the thread, doesn't sit well with me at all and makes me uncomfortable. There was nothing inherently wrong with the thread to the point it needed to be completely wiped out. You can argue rules all you want but I don't think it was right or fair and I don't think any rules were even broken, perhaps bent but not broken, nothing a friendly reminder wouldn't have resolved. In fact I question the motives involved, since the owner of the site has a financial incentive to make sure there are as many users coming here as possible, regardless of their motives or intents or investment in the community, and I suspect that is why you felt the need to straight up delete the thread. Even your reply in it was pseudo-pushing your vision.
And its not like anyone is just going to make a thread about the same thing after seeing the last one get deleted. The entire conversation is essentially curtailed now. Censored. All the good points and posts that *were* made gone, never to be seen again.
I also resent being told I should have lurked more, considering I only ever post if there is something I really feel like I should say. I have been coming here since almost the beginning, and I understand proper imageboard etiquette, tyvm.
I will however apologize for not replying to your post in the thread, I've been really busy with systems upgrades and the start of planting season and I admittedly got derailed myself. I really didn't expect the thread to get as many replies as it did. There were a few things I wanted to say to your post, but I won't bother now, especially since the thread is now wiped off the face of the internet and I can't go back to reference the points made.
But whatever, I'm not going to solve anything by complaining here. The damage is done. Here's to a hope and a prayer that lainchan survives and thrives and continues to be the place it was meant to be, abstracted from any one person's 'vision'..
藤原純一 · 2023-02-19 05:13
And by the way, a thread like that on /q/ would have completely missed the userbase that needed to see it, and it actually would be inappropriate for /q/ in the first place because there was no real solution. 'mock /q/ thread in /r/'? It seems like you don't even understand what /r/ is. This is just a transparent, convenient excuse for the way you reacted.

What financial incentive ? Lainchan has always run at a financial loss. I don't get paid for or by it . Lainchan is definitely NOT about making sure there are as many users coming here as possible, regardless of their motives or intents or investment in the community.
>>>And its not like anyone is just going to make a thread about the same thing after seeing the last one get deleted
People can and do make a new thread about the same thing after the last one gets deleted. The entire conversation isn't curtailed or censored.

What vision ? As per my previous answer
