First of all, a warning: I almost exclusively post on /λ/, so my opinions might not be representative of the whole website, and some of my suggestions are directed mainly towards /λ/.
As highlighted time and again in various threads, I think lainchan users still don't have a good grasp on what saging does.
Many think it's a dislike or a downvote directed towards the thread, the post it's replying to, or who knows what. Those who don't, have no clear idea of what it actually is, what it represents and how and when it should be used.
To clear this misunderstanding up, I propose a few changes to some boards and to the website. I don't expect the administration to agree on all of them, but I'd like you to take them into consideration.
Make sage invisible
4chan has already experimented with this, and while I personally think sage is almost useless on there because of the high traffic, it definitely succeeded in stopping people from soykafting up the threads with useless posts like "sage goes in all fields". This change, along with making announcing sages a bannable offence, also cleared up the misunderstanding about saging.
Improve the catalog
People often see saging as a downvote because threads risk to fall off page 1 and be forgotten by the majority of the users. I think improving the catalog could fix that, because it would make less popular threads that are more likely to fall off page 1 more visible.
Right now, my opinion is that the catalog is an awful way to browse threads on lainchan, especially on boards like /λ/ where the OP image might not be very representative of the subject of the thread. The text is barely readable, the OP comments get clipped, and I think it looks generally pretty awful.
In general, I think the catalog should become the default way to browse threads on some board. A handful of CSS changes could easily fix it. I can contribute those myself.
Increase the thread limit on image-light boards
A legitimate concern is that a saged thread could be bumped off the board if most of the posts are saged. I think increasing the thread limit would help with this, especially on boards where images are barely posted like /λ/, and since one of the mods for that board often suggests branching off into another thread when one goes too much off the rails.
(This is probably the change I feel the least strongly about.)
Replacing sage with a "bump" checkbox
I know the term "sage" has a long history in western imageboards, but it creates so much confusion among newcomers and regulars alike that I think it should be dropped. A checkbox that clearly says whether you want your post to bump the thread or not is much clearer and doesn't have the negative connotation that "sage" has come to represent. Hell, 下げる literally means "to lower".
It should be checked by default, so the default behavior wouldn't change.
These are my suggestion. I think they would work best if implemented all at once, but tell me what you think.
By the way, if your opinion is that the meaning of "sage" should be a downvote, and should reflect that of its japanese origin "to lower", then all the more reason to get rid of it. Downvotes don't belong on an imageboard.

The /λ/ board has recently had a much higher posting rate and, unfortunately, I've noticed a higher percentage of poor posts that have been handled. I believe much of the confustion stems from the option being purely a foreign word special key in the email field; I wouldn't call it that for this reason, among others.

Not bumping a thread is mostly useless on Lainchan, as well. While I'd also thought about this, I saw it as being rather pointless, given that it's never particularly been an issue, until this current time.

I'm similarly surprised that many users don't seem to peruse the later pages.

An alternative would be strictly enforcing relevant opening images; I don't currently do this in part because I don't want to see empty boxes often and locking a thread over such would be somewhat extreme.

I'd already asked Appleman1234 to raise the thread limit for /λ/ months ago. I believe it's actually the largest board, at thirteen pages.

How amusing that this was also my precise thinking about this. A while back there was a rush to replace vichan with a custom solution and this is precisely how I would've done it, if I'd bothered finishing by now.
This will all, of course, be very much considered, although I'm not particularly fond of the first or second options, in order of least agreed with.

I think saging is so frowned upon precisely because its most visible effect is that of showing up in the post, and not that of its actual function; I think showing "sage" in the post essentially compromises its function.
But now that I think about it, this probably wouldn't be an issue if the terminology simply changed to "bump/don't bump".
>An alternative would be strictly enforcing relevant opening images
I think the problem with this is that for /λ/ threads sometimes it's hard to find a relevant and descriptive OP image, and when it is it usually involves text, which is not very readable at the small sizes of the catalog.
I'll try to make some CSS changes that I think would improve the layout of the catalog and post them here soon.

Then it's probably fine as it is now.
