Helping

Appleman1234 · 2017-05-12 18:25
This is a request for any help that lainons want to offer to make Lainchan better. Please find a list of some ways you can help Lainchan below: Please note this list is just a starting point, and is not every possible way you can help Lainchan. You can help Lainchan by posting quality posts on Lainchan. Quality posts abide by the rules and mention the subject matter of a post, as well as the motivation for posting. You can help Lainchan by reporting rule violations on Lainchan. You can reply to the /q/ threads containing bug reports >>1005 , feature requests >>1190 or suggestions >>2860 or discussing the future of Lainchan >>626 . You can help by fixing issues with the lainchan software (see https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/issues for issues that have been reported, though there are plenty that haven't reported yet ) You can work on / contribute to official and unofficial Lainon / Lainchan projects (see gitla.in or the IRC for starting points.) You can work on one of the 5 or more attempts to rewrite Lainchan's board software in a different language (Python, Haskell, Rust, Go, Common Lisp). You can help by spending time with Lainons, whether on the chan, IRC, Mumble, unofficial game servers (Xonotic, Minecraft, LambdaMoo,etc.) You can make custom CSS or custom JavaScript for Lainchan, that can be tested using the User CSS and User JS features. You can summarise the list of user requests in existing /q/ posts in order to make them easier to priortise and be worked on. You can attempt to reproduce the issues reported in the bug reports thread, and post steps to reproduce in the thread or workarounds. You can improve the accuracy and quality of the transcription for the Annual General Meeting that was recorded. You can work on IRC bot plugins for Arisu. You can work on the IRC bot specification protocol for the new server. You can provide additional feedback in /q/. You can request threads to be restored to the archive at https://lainchan.org/archive_preview.html and >>268 , alternatively you can recreate threads inspired by posts in the archive. You can apply to become a janitor of a particular board. Donations are always welcome. Thanks for your contributions, assistance and support.

If you want to make the existing software solution better , you can also see >>>/λ/483 . A possible practical purpose to it is that the people making their own imageboard software are doing it for reasons (whether it is because they think PHP sucks, or vichan sucks, I don't know), and you may share those reasons and want lainchan to change software platform for a better / different user experience.

Appleman1234 · 2021-01-03 13:35
>>9571 Sardach's fix is incomplete and has other sideeffects hence why it hasn't been merged. p810's implementation of updateNotice functionality appears to work from the PR, but doesn't when tested because we don't bump the version of Lainchan in install.php like vichan used to. The main reason that PR isn't merged is because of the implied contract it makes with upgrade path testing from any version of vichan, which we don't want to commit to at this time. p810's changes to delete-stray-images, may work but that file has been deprecated as far as I know and that is why that PR hasn't been merged. Regarding the remaining issues, I will attempt to reply to them in the next month or so, but not all of them are bug reports, some are just feature requests for optional functionality which can be done, but require a lot more work then the issue raised indicates.

just add this to post.php to stop future thread flooding if ((!isset($_POST['mod']) || !$_POST['mod']) && !isset($_POST['thread'])) { $duration = 300; if (isset($config['flood_time_ip_thread'])) $duration = $config['flood_time_ip_thread']; $query = prepare(sprintf("select count(*) as count from ``posts_%s`` where `time` >= unix_timestamp() - :duration and `thread` is null and `ip` = :ip", $board['uri'])); $query->bindValue(':ip', $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'], PDO::PARAM_STR); $query->bindValue(':duration', $duration, PDO::PARAM_INT); $query->execute() or error(db_error()); if ($query->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)["count"] > 0) error(_("You must wait longer before posting a new thread.")); $query = prepare(sprintf("select count(*) as count from ``posts_%s`` where `time` >= unix_timestamp() - 3600 and `thread` is null", $board['uri'])); $query->execute() or error(db_error()); if ($query->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)["count"] >= $config['threads_per_page']) error(_("Too many new threads made recently. Try again later.")); } also turn on early 404 by setting $config['early_404'] to true on all boards, that would've made the recent soyjak spamming ineffective, i didn't see him (them?) reply to his own threads whatever else you're doing to cause "Flood detected; Post discarded." for innocent posts is really annoying and makes me not want to bother posting here anymore. turn down $config['flood_time'], $config['flood_time_ip'] and $config['flood_time_same'], you set them way too high, i shouldn't have to wait an hour just to repost a deleted reply because it had a typo. the above code will make whatever false-positive-producing "anti-flooding mitigation" you added unnecessary.
Appleman1234 · 2023-06-10 17:49
>>11810 Regarding your patch, I will look into it . early 404 is already enabled and didn't make anything ineffective. If you don't want to post here any more, then don't post here any more, the values you have mentioned have been adjusted. So far your patch as proposed is insufficient to make existing and future anti-flooding mitigation unnecessary.
Vasya Pupkin · 2023-06-10 18:49
>>11811 you can modify or adjust it however you like if you find anything useful. idc about credit/copyright, git dweebery or any other cringe legal/clout soykaf, you can claim it as yours, i'm a public domainer and pirate. if that crackpot fredrick brennan manages to relicense vichan to AGPL ( https://github.com/vichan-devel/vichan/issues/545 ), too fuarrrkin bad, i'm going to use add or use whatever code i like (e.g. my custom anti-cp python script which so far has about a 90% success rate with no false positives, i can share it here in a pastebin if interested) without pre-emptively revealing it to the public (altho i frequently help and share stuff with other vichan board owners if they need it) and there's nothing he or his soyjak troll army (to whom he's recently transferred vichan maintainership btw if you haven't paid attention) can do about it in your case in the second block PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)["count"] >= $config['threads_per_page'] might be too liberal (my board is more laissez-faire/non-serious and has lots of pages, idc if the soyjak losers wipe one index page worth of posts) you can change it to for example: PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)["count"] >= 4 so only 4 new threads can be made each hour. or create your own $config['max_threads_per_hour'] variable or something, check it with isset() first like i did in the first block, idc maybe you don't like this below style of a default duration variable or checking for an optional $config['flood_time_ip_thread'] variable and would prefer a different approach, type whatever you want instead for your lainchan fork: $duration = 300; if (isset($config['flood_time_ip_thread'])) $duration = $config['flood_time_ip_thread'];

btw not sure if you're interested, i also have some delete time limit code. not sure if you added something like this already in your lainchan fork. had a situation where a troll or two would make some threads, people would reply (i.e "effortpost") to them, then the thread creator would delete the thread later. so to put an end to that i put a time limit where you can't delete your thread after say 30 minutes. if (isset($config['delete_time_limit']) && time() > $post['time'] + $config['delete_time_limit'] && (!$thread || $thread['password'] != $password)) { error(sprintf($config['error']['delete_too_late'])); } would be placed https://github.com/vichan-devel/vichan/blob/2cd1ea4095806f7bced501b54e65935be12eb0fd/post.php#L236 dunno if you'd prefer $config['delete_time_limit'] to be a required variable instead in inc/config.php (as opposed to isset-ing it first), i might change that in my instance now that i think about it. i guess it would be better if it is, because it requires this error variable i added in config.php anyway for the code to work, it's a bit schizophrenic to make $config['delete_time_limit'] optional by isset-ing it, but the error function depends on a new required variable: $config['error']['delete_too_late']= _('You can\'t delete a post this old.'); in line 1170 https://github.com/vichan-devel/vichan/blob/2cd1ea4095806f7bced501b54e65935be12eb0fd/inc/config.php#L1170
Spooky · 2023-06-10 20:05
>>11815 meant to say "where you can't delete your '''post'''" not "where you can't delete your '''thread'''". maybe you'll want to modify it so it's limited to threads only, idk. actually i think it's better for $config['delete_time_limit'] to be optional because i think maybe the average board owner probably would not want a time limit by default, idk, as adding any $config['delete_time_limit'] would add a default time limit if this code's logic is left as is.

Yesterday I wrote a modification to vichan that allows spam filtering posts based on the expanded endpoints of shortened URLs that appear in the post. We're using it on my sites to fight the CP spam problem, after observing that the spammers' infinite supply of URL shorteners are used to mask just a few endpoints. It's currently pull request #775 on the main vichan repo. Not sure if this helps or you already have countermeasures in place other than fast janitors.

There has to be some better solution than just reporting and then banning, no?

can we make a thread in /lit/ for ARGs and move all the ARGs, especially non-technical ones, to that thread? also can we improve the language enhancer so "gore" when not used in spam posts like "best gore tube" and words within words like "psychoanalysis" don't get filtered? >>13676 there's a patch to vichan which counteracts the specific CP spam issues that have been affecting boards https://github.com/seisatsu/vichan/commit/6e3217485426474da511ae6ae40b7b186434e0bf
Mitnick · 2026-01-29 03:33
>>13837 That seems useful. One thing I did as a vichan based board admin was implementing regex filters targeting typical content of those posts. It did result in a short ”arms race” where the spammer(s) tried to out smart my filtering but after some tweaking the filter got pretty robust. If I start having issues with that I’ll probably make the filter automatically ban the users after hitting it a few times to make attempting to bypass it more tedious.
Jane Doe · 2026-02-01 21:03
>>13838 lainchan has a similar filter that has unfortunately gone neglected because apple can't into regex. as a result, you cannot post about underground breakcore sensation goreshit without being cyberraped by the language enhancer

The post I requested to be removed happened sooner than expected. I just want to say: Thank you, thank you very much. And also thank you very much for all these marvelous years. I really had a great time while it lasted and I met some interesting people. However, due to the increasing number of unpleasant people who just want to "have fun" at one's expense by endlessly insulting one, I no longer enjoy interacting with other lainons in peace. So, I'm going to stop visiting the site for my peace of mind (also, I already procrastinate way too much). Once again, I am extremely grateful for your hard work, and I hope that life is giving you wonderful things. I would have liked to contribute something actually relevant, like code to mitigate attacks involving images of minors or gore, but sadly back end programming is not my strong suit. Anyways, I hope Lainchan's future is bright. Take care. さようなら!
カルロス · 2026-04-03 14:15
Hello, I hope you are doing awesome. I hope it doesn't look like I'm making cheap marketing here, but, why you don't implement this thing on Lainchan? https://github.com/TecharoHQ/anubis It's open source, so people more talented than me regarding this stuff can detect if it hides something shady. Maybe it will help with the spam issue? I'm posting this out of complete ignorance; I don't know if there exist's a reason you can't or don't wanna use this tool. It's my try-hard way of "helping" to mitigate the pedo/gore spam attacks. I genuinely hope it helps in something. Cheers!

>>13979 I don't like complaining, but I must second this. I remember when lainchan was actually a pretty civilized site. I mean, there were heated debates and people who didn't necessarily agree with an opinion. But lately: * It's already common to enter and see gore or child porn on the main page. * The tacky soyposting is reaching a point where the site already looks like a soyjak party clone. Last thing we need is those degenerate cowards here. * Several threads that are already just an excuse to behave like animals anonymously. * Constant and arbitrary use of offensive slang. Sometimes I feel like it's a kind of conspiracy. As you could have very interesting and deep talks on this site, bad actors are sending people to ruin it and impose brewing soykaf and brainrot just like what happened to 4chan.
Hacker · 2026-04-16 13:06

Trinity · 2026-04-16 15:41
>>13992 >appleman is asleep at the wheel. :( I mean, it's not like someone is paying these people for maintaining/moderating the site; it's more a hobby thing. They probably have no time to dedicate their whole lives to this site preservation like it's their job or something like that and also, let's be honest, the interest on it it's not that much (the most "lively" board is /hum and that place already looks like a 4chan's lost cousin). Maintaining a site is difficult. Just remember that the code is open sourced: https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan Maybe you can contribute to make it better or make a fork from it and try to make your own Garden of Eden on the Web.

カルロス · 2026-04-18 14:10
>>13998 Although I kind of agree, these people do not owe nothing to us and it's not their job. And you know what? To a large extent users are the ones to blame, not the mods. Many come only as tourists or to take out their frustrations with life instead of contributing something of real value or starting really interesting threads. People start threads on exactly the same damn topic they dealt with in 10 subsequent ones without bothering to check if there is already one initiated on that subject. And the worst thing is that they don't even get anywhere and it just becomes a goofy drama center. And it bothers me that when you try to help, they get defensive or just ignore you altogether because they think being sardonic is "cool". If I were a mod, I would have sent them to hell too. Stay with your dead place. I spend my time posting resources to get people out of their delusional cloud of conformity, but seeing that they are not interested at all, this site is already more of a kind of archive that I can visit to review the resources when I need it. I don't need some anonymous cowardly loser calling me 'retarded'. Instead of complaining, you should look for a place that truly feels genuine to you, not some anonymous image board. >>14111 Also I actually don't think a pow would really help with botting to be honest... it's mainly to make scraping too expensive at scale, I don't think if it'd be effective to stop a dedicated spammer as scale is not his goal and so running a soykafty playwright setup is more than enough. I don't think there's a better path than some heuristics to identify and block soykaf... with low false positives.

I could be wrong, but my feeling is any permanent "fix" would either remove the anonymity or make the site not worth interacting with. World governments have identified anon IBs as a threat, and are using their considerable resources to put pressure on those flaws. Just a feeling, I could be wrong somehow.
