lainchan / q

this time around, please have less boards
we don't need 300 for a community of like 15 people

This. I don't understand what is so hard to grasp. It's the reason 99chan was DOA, why 8ch and its derivatives failed so miserably, and arguably the beginning of the end for 4chon.net.
Too many boards thins out the userbase to the point that even if the site isn't dead it will seem that way to many.

99chan was pretty active for a good stretch there. It was so comfy too. It was truly the best place on the internet for alcoholic janitors.
Anonymous · 2017-04-11 21:46
Agree.
Lainchan was just too slow pre-Event. Maybe we can rebuild it better than it was before?
Tyrell Wellick · 2017-04-11 21:49
But all the boards were necessary

lets just have /cyb/q/zzz
everything can fit into one of those
Boris Grishenko · 2017-04-11 23:38
Yes. Start with a few boards as necessary to cover the disparate interests of the users here.
We have to build from scratch now and it's silly to dilute what little activity there is by spreading it thin across a dozen boards. Better to have ONE high traffic board and splinter it as topics become too dominant on that board.
If only there was a board that covered everything on the site. OH WAIT, we already know which board that is. Kalyx made the point over and over, after all.
We only need /cyb/.
(and /q/, and the quarantine that is /feels/, probably.)

I agree with this. If we can get good mods, janitors and if appleman wants to put in the work this is most likely the best course of action. See what trends there are and build boards from there.
Issue is that's real time intensive. I hope /cyb/ returns and a /tech/ type of board. Also maybe an /art/ or /cult/ otherwise even if we get all the same boards back I don't think it'll be an issue.

Time is all we have. I think this is an opportunity to bring the whole userbase together for a while and see what shakes out.
Easier for the mods and if new boards are spun up as demand emerges (rather than trying to guess the demand), there will already be content in threads ready to move over into their respective homes.
/tech/ /art/ /cult/ etc, all worthy boards, but I think it will be sad and lonely in many of them until there's a critical mass of quality content to justify their existence.
Better, I think, to have all that posting in the same place so that it all contributes to a high quality board as a starting point and then can be used to seed future boards as demand makes it obvious they're wanted and will be used.
If we overextend now while there's literally nothing here to justify it, it'll be the same sad low traffic site it was last week but without even the old content to give it a sense of identity.

It always seemed redundant to me to have /sec/ be its own board as opposed to being part of /tech/. I think Lainchan ought to just start off as /tech/ for the nitty gritty and /cyb/ for more abstract concepts like culture and philosophy. Think of it like hard science fiction and soft science fiction. Then they can just act as a primordial soup of sorts for what future boards end up being.
Cowboy · 2017-04-12 01:11
I had lurked around /\lambda/ , /tech/, and /sci/ and would like to see it again.
It's more tame and less consumerist cancer than 8 or 4. What happened to freech /tech/, it full of spam?
PMYA · 2017-04-12 01:14
I liked /sec/, but it's probably a good idea to kill it for the time being. Just allow security related posts in tech and programming and it'll be fine.

I personally think that some of these boards do move slower, especially /cult/ and /lit/. Perhaps a good idea would be to merge /cult/, /lit/, and what was once /art/?
Nell · 2017-04-12 04:07
Where the fuarrrk did /drg/ go? Did it get deleted or something? What's going on?

The answer is literally everywhere, my junkie friend. If you're too stoned to look around, here's a tl;dr:
Appleman did some silly mistake when buying lainchan back then, and a few days ago when trying to reset some forgotten password related to the VPS, the email popped up at Kalyx, who though it would be lulzy to have a go and wipe everything off the VPS (the server). Since Applesauce was keeping the backups right next to the original, all the content is a goners. No we're having a funny existential discussion on where to go, and what boards to set up to maximize the benefits of having a completely clean start. Make sure to loudly protest in the relevant thread for the return of /drg/, if you care to.
Netrunner · 2017-04-12 06:32
Just have one fuarrrking board. Like when I go to lainchan, it's just that board. That would simplify things immensely and make this place less dead.
Random · 2017-04-12 08:05
I'd like a /diy/ like board. For soldering, radio, that sort of stuff that is more physical than just programming.
/lit/ as well is a must have. If nothing else we at least have to be learned, right?

you say we .. should ... make lainchan ... great again?

This is the best thing to do
SHODAN · 2017-04-12 11:39
You know what... I disagree. When new lurkers see that a chan doesn't have a subboard about their interest, they assume that people don't talk about their interest at that chan. Meaning they are less likely to stay.
I mean I know out of experience that you shouldn't overextend either, But what you guys are sugesting is boring. This is a one of chance to do wild experiments, and I say let's do them.

Where can I put non-scifi weeb content there?

But I do think that Appleman1234 should add 2-3 more boards ASAP so that people can start posting again. Those 2-3 boards should be something that everyone agrees on.

I think /lit/ should be integrated into the other boards. ElecEng books in diy and CompSci books in lambda etc.
The boards ought to be /cyb/ which is /cult/, /tech/ which is /sec/ & /tech/, /diy/ which would be any hardware (elec, thinkpads, cars, etc)
Just some quick ideas

Its about quality not quantity. Its fine having different subjects and Lain didnt have huge amount.
All of them are fairly essential imo.
