Group the boards like they used to be for easy navigation
Void · 2017-04-24 16:33
Having all the boards dumped into a single list in a random order is a bit un-user friendly. We should go back to how related boards used to be grouped together for easy navigation, such as:
>[ sec / tech / λ / diy / layer ] [ zzz / drg / inter / lit / music / vis ] [ q / r ]
For anyone who doesn't remember off hand, the original board groupings were:
>[ sec / sci / tech / λ / diy / layer ] [ zzz / feels / drg / lit / cult ] [ q / r ]

Oh god she's so cute.

Absolutely. Having them thrown into a list doesn't really encourage me to explore them very much.
The grouping of the old navigation was perfect actually.

the man / machine distinction does make sense

very much in favor of this as well. I find myself searching every time I look at the top bar now

I already know this will sound like a bad idea but:
there are a soykafload of boards right now, all I can see is a long list that I don't really care to go over. I know lainons will simply go to their preferred boards, perhaps just bookmark them or something.
But since some boards are grouped in some overboards (/lit/ /music/ /vis/ under /cult/) (to which may I suggest adding a technical overboard, call it what you like), my idea was that only the overboards be listed in the top bar, and that when you are in an overboard, the top bar shows the boards it governs. For example, if I'm in /cult/, then the top bar should now have [ /lit/ /music/ /vis/ ] [ /cult/ /mega/ /psy/ /random/ ]
I had another idea: since we already have a bunch of boards with unicode names ( /drg/ is a pill, /tech/ is omega, etc), it'd be nice that such names would be the ones shown in the top bar (I really found the /drg/ pill a nice detail). In 4ch, the names of boards are already non-obvious, they're just cryptic 1-3 letter strings.
Then make /tech/ just a symlink to /omega/ and for the love of lain, get the /lam/ symlink to /lambda/!
I know my post will go ignored as they usually are even though I feel my ideas are not too bad.

Hell, it'd be nice if most boards had an unicode name, so the top bar looks like an APL program :-)

This would be unjust to more active boards like /lit/ that have enough momentum that their availability only through /cult/ page presents them as a lesser board.
A better way to handle grouping would be to present a GroupBoard//Boards list that's available on all boards. Some formatting examples:
[ cult [ inter / lit / mu / vis ] ]
or
[ cult | inter / lit / mu / vis ]
or
[ cult :: inter / lit / mu / vis ]
or
[ cult << inter / lit / mu / vis ]
You get the idea. A full variant:
[ diy / λ / layer / r / sec / tech ] [ cult :: inter / lit / mu / vis ] [ psy :: drg / zzz ] [ q / mega / random ]

I don't know about that. I like having the overboards just listed in a separate group as they are now. Besides, the catalog doesn't work on the overboards so it would be annoying to have to manually type the URL for the board if you want to check the catalog.
Ender · 2017-04-24 20:28
Personally I think the overboards just clutter too much, but a better grouping would at least help some sort of order

I was waiting for more feedback before changing this from alphabetical order, but based on your request and some discussion, the board list order in the top bar has been adjusted.
This can be changed at any time, but until the client side configuration functionality is developed , it can't be unique to each client without UserJS (which still needs to be added to Options).
E.g. it is one ordering for the entire site, all users.

We want to implement something like your suggestion eventually , though that does require additional development in order to make happen.

Currently too many people had issues with Unicode Emoji support, so we fell back to ASCII board aliases except for λ. When the user configuration aliasing is finished the unicode aliases , along with image fallback will be an option.
>>2071
That is an interesting idea, and we will look into how best to implement it.

The catalog works on /mega/ and it should work on /cult/ and /psy/ but you are correct that 404s, so we will look into fixing that.

This is better than my idea, for the reasons others poined out.
Also I insist that a technical overboard be in place, /wired/ or something.

The catalog has been updated so that it works for /culture/ and /psy/ now, thank you for the bug report.
Unnamed · 2017-04-25 03:15
If you create a overboard for tech boards, name it of /NAVI/.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2017-04-25 03:18
My personal preference would be two alphabetical lists, one being for boards and the other being overboards.

>[ diy / λ / layer / r / sec / tech ] [ cult :: inter / lit / mu / vis ] [ psy :: drg / zzz ] [ q / mega / random ]
By this time next week the navbar will be compile.
Stop.

Ok what about a dropdown menu with links to subboards if you hover over the overboards?

I like this idea, one row on top for boards, and a second row on bottom for overboards.
