How 'fast' is 'fast enough' in your opinion?
Jean Dupont · 2017-04-20 19:47
We constantly talk about how lainchan is slow or not slow or whatever.
But nobody ever mentions how fast is fast enough for him.
I personally am satisfied, although more is better.. I have had even forums that had a couple of posts per month that I was satisfied with. But I do not want to judge people that think Lainchan should be faster. I just want to hear their opinion on this.
How many posts per day would you be satified with on Lainchan? Or are you already satisfied?
Dr. X · 2017-04-20 19:49
My guess is that most people complaining about post speed are new and/or come from 8chan/4chan.
I think this speed is comfy, i can catch up on all posts coming here once or twice a day. The only downside is that lainchan isn't a very good place to get quick answers about math or programming.
Sabo Engle · 2017-04-20 19:57
I think Lainchan is fine, especially in it's current state. Sometimes I prefer it even slower, it's been fast lately due to all the soykaf brewing and arguments about management.
Ender · 2017-04-20 20:28
>although more is better
we already have our good share of soykaf, the faster this board is, the more soykaf we'll have, and overall quality will go down.
I am satisfied with the current pace of lainchan, I think those who say it should be faster come from the huge boards.
Koos van der Merwe · 2017-04-20 21:04
In my opinion, 40 - 50 posts per hour would be the minimal ideal rate. I wish it would be 100 per hour, but I'm trying to be modest here.
Appleman has failed to listen to a somewhat substantial group of his userbase and has created nine new boards since the wipe initiate by Kalyx, not including /q/. (The group in question wanted less boards to suit the real number of total lainons using the website). So, taking the nine boards that are currently up, let's assume for now that all nine boards are visited at an equal rate by lainons. If the rate was say 50PPH, each board would see about 5 or 6 new posts every hour, that would be fantastic! Because if a lainon spends an hour of his time lurking in his favorite thread (or an interesting one), he can have a conversation with possibly five or six other lainons.
But with the way things are now, this is impossible. Have you ever noticed how many arguments on Lainchan seem especially cancerous when compared to other bigger imageboards? It's because there are such little people browsing Lainchan at once that if an argument breaks out, it will most likely be a one on one posting match with no one else to give their opinion, and an endless cycle of cancer will ensue. Allow me to list the negative consequences of our posting rate combined with our ridiculous number of boards to "suit" that rate:
1. Arguments become circular cancer holes.
2. Lainons can't expect to get an answer to a well-written or well-thought-out post within the same day (or week, or month, or year).
3. Lainons may forget about conversations they had with other Lainons (or projects they've previously contributed to) entirely.
4.. Lainons have to see the same threads and posts every day, every week, every month, and sometimes every year.
5. Projects spanning across separate boards suffer from a lack of able minds and attention.
6. Some of those with ADD and autism (but have great talent) may not find a home in such a boring place.
7. Lainons become paranoid as to who they're talking to because the chance they're talking to an "anonymous" mod or admin is especially high.
8. A single attack on the website (more likely to be one initiated from the inside) could wipe out months if not years of content.
9. Subversion of the community is easy, because there aren't many minds to subvert.
The number one meme regurgitated to all eight arguments is the "hurr durr /mega/" meme. But there are many lainons who don't use /mega/ for whatever reason they choose. Some don't even ever realize they can customize /mega/, and who can blame them, honestly? Most lainons are normal people who come here to read threads and make posts, not customize their own /mega/ page. And while /mega/ might create an "ideal" board for yourself, it's difficult to keep the illusion that it is a single board, and it just feels strange.
There are other counter-arguments but I won't address them all.

>40 - 50 posts per hour would be the minimal ideal rate.
What parameters are you using? Lainchan never had so many posts per hour, and it would probably be a soykafshow to moderate. Are you sure your expectations are aligned with what lainchan is, not with 8 or 4chan?
>somewhat substantial group of his userbase
In most threads about this subject, the majority agrees that for what lainchan is, more boards are a benefit. I'm not sure where this substantial group of the userbase is.
>If the rate was say 50PPH, each board would see about 5 or 6 new posts every hour, that would be fantastic!
You're going into a restaurant and complaining that your meal doesn't get ready in 3 minutes. It's not a fast food, it was never a fast food. You're expecting something that never was.
>Have you ever noticed how many arguments on Lainchan seem especially cancerous when compared to other bigger imageboards?
Definitely haven't noticed. The reason chan culture is so despicable is because the userbase usually is pretty childish. That kind of behavior is not seen with good eyes here, never were. Provide examples to your argument.
>1. Arguments become circular cancer holes.
Low quality posts are often deleted or warned by moderation, this is one of the best characteristics of this place.
>2. Lainons can't expect to get an answer to a well-written or well-thought-out post within the same day (or week, or month, or year).
Again, what is wrong here isn't lainchan, your expectations are wrong. This is not what Lainchan is, this was never Lainchan. There are other imageboards out there more aligned to this expectation. This is not one of them.
>Lainons may forget about conversations they had with other Lainons (or projects they've previously contributed to) entirely.
Can you provide any proof of that? This argument looks as if you're theorizing over something you never did yourself, like people in the 90's saying that weed is worse than cocaine and d&d leads to suicide. It's just not based on reality.
>4 Lainons have to see the same threads and posts every day, every week, every month, and sometimes every year.
If you have a problem with that you're probably in the wrong community. Once again, your expectations are not what this place is or will ever be. It's a niche within a niche.
>5. Projects spanning across separate boards suffer from a lack of able minds and attention.
Which projects spanning across separate boards suffered from a lack of able minds and attention? Provide a few examples.
>6. Some of those with ADD and autism (but have great talent) may not find a home in such a boring place.
This is not an institution, this is not supposed to be home to every single human being on planet earth. This place is not supposed to appeal to everyone.
Again, your expectations do not make any sense.
>7. Lainons become paranoid as to who they're talking to because the chance they're talking to an "anonymous" mod or admin is especially high.
Could you provide examples of lainons who feel like that? Because mods and admins are just people who enjoy posting here, it does not make any sense to feel afraid of them and this is the first time i read something like this.
>8. A single attack on the website (more likely to be one initiated from the inside) could wipe out months if not years of content.
This is an anonymous imageboard, not a forum. If we had 100 PPH content would vanish from the catalog either way. Your argument contradicts itself.
>9. Subversion of the community is easy, because there aren't many minds to subvert.
Lainchan is not a government institution, stop projecting as if it was.
Define what subversion is and how do you think Lainchan could be subverted, otherwise this argument is just more senseless projection.

I find lainchan pace familiar and I am fine with it. But I don't come from 4chan or 8ch but from a slower national chan. Lainchan feels about the same as speed I am used to for thematic non-/b/ boards. /b/ moves fast so threads come up and disappear withing few hours but it also has sokaf quality. For the kind of discussions that lainchan facilitates I find current amount of users and post just fine. I wouldn't mind it being bit slower or faster as long as the general dynamic doesn't change dramatically.
Just another Random Lainon · 2017-04-21 16:22
Of course I wish there could be loads of posts and all of them be high quality, but you kind of have to choose between quantity and quality and I'd rather have the latter. Lainchan isn't even that slow compared to some imageboards I browse that get like than 2 posts a day. Slow boards can be comfy.
I say people complaining about how slow it is should just post more, that way it would be faster for everyone right? For me lainchan is a fine speed, I'd much rather it be slow rather than become the soykafshow that is fast boards on 8ch / 4chan.

That's because the users are the ones that facilitate such discussion. Were this board faster, it'd only turn into /g/. The number of users actuallly interested in serious discussion is very limited, and will only engage in so much discussion during their day.

quality over quantity always.

What the hell is wrong with you people? Why are you guys so desperately trying to turn this into 4chan/8chan?
> arguments on Lainchan seem especially cancerous when compared to other bigger imageboards
Guess "Y is stupid, stop liking what I don't like" followed by people trying to throw memes and insults at each other without any reasons or understanding of the topic qualifies as good arguments to you.
I just don't get it, why are you guys here? You want a fast scrolling, generic site, no one is forcing you to be here. We were never that kind of community.
And this has always been a very comfy place to me, and that is especially because this is NOT just another "let's get as much crap flowing as possible" imageboard. Lainchan is unique. We should grow at a healthy pace that fits us.
> 8. A single attack on the website (more likely to be one initiated from the inside) could wipe out months if not years of content.
So? We are here to discuss stuff, not to create an archive or hoard PDFs. And that is what we will continue to do.
