Less boards!
BloodCat · 2017-04-20 10:52
Dudes, stop creating more boards, please. The lainchan user base is not big and you'll split the community. Just before the inception of /zzz/ and /drg/ there was a significant drop on the posts. Aren't you analyzing these metrics? The maximum boards for this imageboard at now is 3-4, I think. No more.
Get /sec/ together with /tech/. Get /zzz/ and /drg/ together and create a /psy/ board. And all the other go to /r/. No more.
Can you guys be seriously that dumb? F.u.c.k.s s.a.k.e
Just another Random Lainon · 2017-04-20 11:06
i agree except sci should come back. okay thanks.
Hououin Kyouma · 2017-04-20 12:09
I for one am very much in favour of a /psy/
Meddler · 2017-04-20 12:18
Nonsense. "Lainchan" is one userbase, if we had a billion boards all could be seen through /mega/ either way.
If we have the mods to take care of each board, the more the merrier. There are no downsides to focused conversation, this is not a physical space.

Regarding the possibility of a /psy/ overboard (like mega, but you can post), this is something that CAN be implemented if there is enough demand.

You really didn't got it.
The point is not that it's just "one userbase", the point is that you fragment people. Most people will not check every board, because that's boring. Most people would like some of the threads that he didn't saw, because there's so many boards, that each one will have very few threads or low interaction.
Also, working with cognitive science here: if you have more boards, the overall perception of activity will be fewer than with less boards. This make people post less, because of the bandwagon effect and the social proof:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandwagon_effect
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_proof
It also contributes to the perception that lainchan is dead.
There's also the confirmation bias reinforcement on fragmentation of more boards. People will just search what they want, and refuse to look other good things. Thats bad not just for the community, but also for the people itself.
>>1631
>CAN
this emphasis on the "CAN" is to evidence that you CANNOT do what many people is requesting here, to remove some boards? If it is, don't cry after 2 months for now this place is a desert. You're doing soykaf do, the same as kalyx. Listen to the community.
Drifter · 2017-04-20 12:49

Not the person you replied to, but I do not see how it fragments anything. As the other person said, /mega/ is exactly the thing that prevents any fragmentation at all. Threads are shown by the most recent post and considering how slow the site is and how long threads stay alive, a quick browse through mega is all you really need to have a good look at all the threads on the site. I can personally say that I only use /mega/ to browse lainchan and if I have any interest in a thread, I just keep the tab open in my browser.

The community has not yet spoken, Appleman replied to you saying this is possible, waiting for further discussion and opinions. You reply in a hostile tone and when looking at the image you posted to start the thread, as well as how you have worded the OP and your other reply, I would most certainly hope you are not the representation of 'community' you seem to think has already spoken on this subject.
As for the merger of /drg/ and /zzz/, I am all for it, it makes logical sense to me, considering both have talks of altered states of mind or senses of reality.
I am looking forward to replies and opinions, thanks for reading!

Have you read my post at all?
https://lainchan.org/mega/index.html
Lainchan is a slow imageboard. /mega/ contains all the posts from every board. You can very easily see everything that happened since the last time you checked. Fragmentation promotes better, more focused discussion.

>Listen to the community.
You, the individual, are not "the community", nor do you speak for the community as a whole. Stop with the sophism bullsoykaf. You come from the premise that Lainchan works the same way that 4chan does, and that you must check each board if you want to know what's happening around the site.
Your assumptions are incorrect.

Yeah, that's why all subversive operations both on the internet and in meat space include the tactic of unifying people in order to destroy discussion, right? You're fuarrrking stupid.

>I speaks for the community
Who said that? I'm referring to other people that have already expressed this opinion the same way I did, such as the comment >>1624 and this whole fuarrrking thread >>468
I don't speak for the community, no, but I'm part of it (a big part, I would say, since I'm always generating more discussion on all boards).
Why is it so complex to you guys to just remove some boards? Why is this a war at all?
>>1633
>/mega/
bullsoykaf. Unless admin prove me contrary, I think most people don't go to /mega/. Probably because of, as other anon said, a salience bias, judging this imageboard to be the same way as others (4chan, especially).
>The community has not yet spoken
Every person writing here is part of the community. So, yeah, the community has spoken. Also, check the links above.
>Appleman replied to you saying this is possible
No, he said it's possible to unify /zzz/ and /drg/, but how about the other unnecessary boards? Nothing.
>You reply in a hostile tone
Of course it is, that was intentional, moron. We're on internet, not on church. Do not expect people to talk with you like we are some England Lord or something.
>>1635
>Fragmentation promotes better, more focused discussion.
Not exactly true. It promotes confirmation bias. That's a non siquitur Bob.
>You come from the premise that Lainchan works the same way that 4chan does
So will new users (again, salience bias), and there will be less posts, hence the motivation to this thread.
I have an idea: let this imageboard running one week with all the fancy boards. Get the statistics. Then remove all unnecessary boards and just let 3 of them. Get the statistics. Now check them.
I'm almost certain that the number of posts will be like 15% increased on less boards. Test it. That's cognitive science dudes.

Your premise is entirely wrong.
Fragmentation of multiple groups under one flag promotes noise. If we were a nation united against a tyrant, this tyrant would greatly benefit if we were scattered over dozens of small groups. We would quarrel and achieve no consensus.
What you're missing is that we are not a nation living under a tyrant, we're miserable people masturbating for pictures of anime girls with cat ears, long lifespan and the body of a child.
In the case of an imageboard, fragmentation promotes better, more focused discussion because when i create my thread about Rust on /λ/, you won't barge in saying that "hipster languages aren't /cyber/", nor will someone derail the post with another, irrelevant subject. The board will have discussions focused on programming and nothing else, thus, promoting better discussions.
tl;dr: check yoself b4 u wreck uself

Lainchan is not 4chan. If you come here using it as if it was, that is your fault and you have to adapt to this new environment, not the other way around.
Your arguments don't make a lot of sense for lainchan. This is a stabilished community with customs that new members have to adapt to, not the other way around.

>It promotes confirmation bias. That's a non siquitur Bob.
Have you even considered what you're saying? Because from my point of view it looks like you're repeating concepts without properly understanding them.
This is not a political forum. Fragmentation in an imageboard where people want to talk about the love of Lain, infosec and drugs cannot promote confirmation bias because these are completely different subjects. Explain what your point is instead of throwing buzzwords around, you're not making a lot of sense.
>Of course it is, that was intentional, moron. We're on internet, not on church
You clearly don't come from here. While it may be viewed as "LULZXD" somewhere else, behaving as you do is only seen as childish in here, most of the time. Speak your mind honestly and directly and people will reply to you just as honestly.
>cognitive science
It pains me to see your bad use of these concepts. Suffice to say they are not laws of nature, and have to be applied in the proper context. This is not the proper context.

>because there's so many boards, that each one will have very few threads or low interaction.
Lainchan as a whole used to be a lot slower than this. It wasn't a problem then because the focus was on good quality posting, and good quality posting takes time. I'd rather have more boards with more quality posting than fewer boards with fast flowing soykaf. Another benefit of more boards being that threads will hang around far longer before getting pruned.
>the point is that you fragment people
Different people have different interests. Consolidating the boards won't suddenly make them start posting in threads they're uninterested in. The thing about lainchan though is that we have an overarching theme in cyberpunk and quality posting. /mega/ takes advantage of that fact really well. Even if you woudn't normally browse /drg/, you might find something that piques your interest while scrolling through /mega/.
>because of the bandwagon effect and the social proof
>So will new users (again, salience bias), and there will be less posts
Try not to think so low of your fellow lainons. I think it's pretty fair to say we stuck around specifically because we're unlike 4chan.

so you call desktop threads, thinkpad threads, headphone threads, this kind of soykaf >>>/r/836 [1] good quality posting? You guys are a joke. You don't really want to discuss this subject, you only want to disagree and confirm your own beliefs.
>>1660
>This is not the proper context.
It is and it's the concepts are correctly used. I'll do an request to authority here but, I study cogsci for more than 2 years now and my work is indirectly related to it. Probably you are just not willing to really understand what I'm saying and, therefore, refuse to get on the argument and, instead appeal to hyperbole. Or maybe we all just have Dunning-Kruger.
>ow some many buzzwords, can't use 'em... wait, isn't this a "quality posting"?
I'll stop now, that's a shame.
[1] yes, I'm the guy trying to make this a less soykaf thread >>>/r/848 . And here >>>/r/858 . And here again >>>/r/1010 , and again >>>/r/437 . It feels I'm alone sometimes, no one wants to be a free spirit (nietzsche concept).

Totally agree, it has always been like this since the beginning a fairly slow imageboard. I want various topics but in there own space and if other people only want to stick to /zzz/ who the fuarrrk cares anyways they will someday find something interesting in other board that's why /mega/ exists.
Shogun · 2017-04-20 19:07

Yes, they can be extremely informative. Not your kind of thread then so be it but no need to be a pretentious elitist about it. That said I do agree with your complaint about quality. It has been getting lower and I would like to see some stronger moderation on the more egregious brewing soykaf.
> this kind of soykaf
We like to have fun too Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA!
Your appeal to authority is great but it doesn't refute the fact it used to be much slower here. By your logic lainchan should already be dead.
Armitage · 2017-04-20 19:15

Yes, these are quality threads for the context of our culture, quality has no relation with complexity. These are some of the things that we like. IF you enjoy this culture, you can become a member. IF you don't, you can find somewhere else you like.
Why go into a place and try to change the established preferences? Shouldn't you go where you like instead of trying to shape some other place to your beliefs and preferences?
All of your arguments boil down to
>"this is not how i like an imageboard to be".
Create your own.
Agent Jones · 2017-04-20 19:20

>appeal of authority
Studying something does not make you invulnerable to stupidity.
You're using concepts that are valid in a society and/or in a different type of forum.
Either you don't understand the very basic premises of what you're studying or you don't understand the very basic premises of what lainchan is.
"Low quality" discussion is when people like you refuse to talk about arguments and their flaws, and retreat into a shell of "i'm right and anyone who doesn't agree with me is outta their minds". Not once did you refute an argument with facts, only poorly used concepts and the idea that somehow YOUR preferences should be the norm in Lainchan, even if your preferences are just what 4chan already is.
