in case you missed it... from at least 10:50 to 12:50 GMT the lainchan.org header links were all redirected to https://lainchan.jp/q/res/3.html#3. you can read it if you want to know more about lainchan.jp. the aforementioned freenode channel #lainchan.jp has junk, seph and nildicit as ops (former administrators/moderators of lainchan).

What a fail idea. I'm glad to see they're getting no traffic and nobody is taking them seriously. Starting and splitting boards according to demand is not a popular one, it annoys me somewhat too, but the answer isn't making a duplicate chan. But then again I'm only here for /sec/ and /lambda/ so the lack of other boards doesn't bother me too much.
Emmanuel · 2017-04-17 13:42

Well, they're right about some things, but the split isn't going to work. People come here to lainchan, and it's already back on it's feet. >lost years of content it's an imageboard, things are supposed to be permanent. Or did the gitla.in get wiped too? Plus the site looks bad and it has no traffic, of course. If only they'd done something else, something new, instead of just copying the old format (badly). But who cares, it doesn't look like it's going to work.

>>1290 For whom? I've loved Lainchan for years, it's one of the few places on the internet that i feel like i belong. It went down for a couple of hours, we lost a little bit of content, but that's ok. If the userbase feels like they should switch places, that's ok too. But i'm not sure what crime was commited here, this was never an institution to begin with, there's no vision or expansion path, it's just a place that likeminded people talk about stuff. Trying to turn it into something else is just plain silly.

I'll say publicly now what I said to you in PMs Seph. Most of the community do not see the same things you do. Most of the community are very much behind Appleman. This was retarded in the extreme and you achieved nothing of value. I'd say worse, you've split the community, but, despite your best attempts, you failed at that. That said. There were some legitimate complaints. I wrote this >>1227 in another thread and said I was having trouble getting through. That has since changed (so I guess you did achieve something after all. I'd applaud you but...) and it looks like everything is getting back on track. So yeah, stay tuned, turn up for the AGM if it interests you. For the first time since the server was wiped I feel that all is well and, of course, LET'S ALL LOVE LAIN!

Apparently they already have backups set up on the new site. As far as we know they still don't have them here. If this was a forum and we had people actively WORKING on tutorials, guides and events, THEN we would have lost something. But PDF dumps are hardly anything of value. Unless you meant something else?
Y.T · 2017-04-17 16:19

Alright, I made some coffee and calmed myself down (just a little, still fuarrrking mad, gimme a day or two). For gods sake. I know you thought you were acting in lain's best interests but this was senseless. Nope. I can't fuarrrking do this right now. Too fuarrrking mad. The only value lainchan has is the effort its users put in it (the domain is irrelevant, whoever pays whatever for it). This site just lost all the value that was put in it, so Appleman asked for suggestion about the future. One suggestion is /r/ /lam/ and a promise of other boards that may or may not happen before May. Another suggestion is lainchan.jp, which not only suggest a complete board layout, but has already delivered. Users are pretty much free to choose which proposal they wanna go with, and add or change details about either. 'Lainchan' is where the users and their efforts end up. Will you go for good old Debian stale, but with release critical bugs, or will you go for the brave new world?

Also, sorry if you really aren't Seph or whoever. Like I say I am really riled up over this. They have acted with such rank idiocy and threatened harm to a community I love. >>1329 >Users are pretty much free to choose which proposal they wanna go with, and add or change details about either. 'Lainchan' is where the users and their efforts end up. Yeah that would have been true if the first thing they did wasn't to change the board list and make this a fuarrrking war. Now, people don't like them and for good reason. That's hostile action right there. A good number of good lains are going to refuse to swap sites on that basis alone. Are we gonna leave them behind because they weren't willing to look past that? fuarrrk that. This was decided in the first stroke. They shot themselves in the foot with their dumb bullsoykaf. >>1331 We get to decide where the content is, we're the ones who make it after all, but, due to their dumb as fuarrrk actions, if we decide that's the other site there isn't going to be any content from the lains we leave behind. If we want to maintain unity here is the only choice. Also, the death of one of the sites (lemme guess which one) is inevitable now. 2 sites is extra unnecessary effort and people will slowly gravitate towards one until it's the one with all the content. I hate being put in a position where I have to hope that a lain project fails but that's where we are right now. This site means all the lains and unity, the other site means a good chunk of the community will just fuarrrk off somewhere else entirely. I am pretty mad right now, maybe not making a considered decision, but I'll be one of them.

>>1335 >>1336 You know you're right. The point of this for me has been catharsis. I trusted Seph. I contacted her for help getting through to Appleman. I spent the time going back through my IRC buffer and copy pasting the conversations we'd had with him so that she'd know what was going on. I answered her questions and gave her well meant advice and support when she told me she didn't agree we should try to work with him and felt there was no other way but a new site. I continued even when she told me she was disregarding my advice and naming the new site lainchan. I told myself, "Hey, even if this is a really dangerous and damaging thing, she's just doing what she feels is right. " I feel betrayed by her taking what I can only interpret as a hostile action against this site. fuarrrking with the board list was low Seph. Real low. I trusted you, I went out of my way to help you and keep you informed even when I had a bunch of other soykaf on my plate and you've spat that back in my face. There's a buddhist saying, it's funny I quoted it to someone else this morning, roughly "anger is like holding on to a hot coal and expecting someone else to get burned." I should take my own advice. I'm gonna step back, go play some vidya like I was about to before this kicked off and calm the fuarrrk down. It's not doing me or anyone else any good.

Why didn't you just save the good parts? I saved all the good posts I read. A couple of anons in other threads mentioned they did too. If you didn't save - your loss. If you're new here then this is kinda the point of the image board to naturally forget some things. Still relevant stuff get bumped, the good parts get copy-pasted and documented in other places, the rest falls out. Want old treasures? Go look around the net. In the future, though, when quantum computers get built and NSA decrypts every packet sent over undersea cables from the last 100 years (before PQC got deployed) and the next Snowden leaks all of that, you'll get all that lost culture back for the taxpayers' money. You just wait. In the meantime, I visit lainchan for years and there were only a couple of threads that were mildly interesting and original that got wiped and didn't get restored yet, for which I can't find a replacement anywhere else. But I saved the good parts of those, of course. And will consider either restarting them or dumping the copy-paste somewhere else for posterity. TL;DR: chans are not social networks. The whole point of being here is to get communication that is less interactive that IRC and that won't haunt you for the rest of your life. I welcome the wipe. You don't? Fine. You are welcome to make your own social network, call it whateverchan, archive everything forever and fuarrrk off. I might lurk there, but won't post ever.

Hey lains. I'm brushing up on what is happening and it seems to me like someone wants to destroy our community. Lain is a good chan because of its community. It attracts people with a good amount of technical knowledge and a low amount of brewing soykaf. >we lost them pdfs No. There are some places you can still get them. Also, chans are transient. If you want an archive do it yourself. > lainchan.jp Stupid idea. This chan is small enough as it is. If you want to make your own chan then do it, but don't steal this one's name. I try to keep the tinfoil low, but this soykaf stinks of consensus cracking (cointelinpro technique). Lets try to keep this community confy and cool. If you want to leave, leave. If you have suggestions and complaints, then let us hear them. Let's all love lain.
H.R. Giger · 2017-04-17 22:05
I would like to say that I support Lainchan. This Lainchan at lainchan.org, and I'm sure those at lainchan.jp have there reasons for creating their own imageboard, but unless there has been some atrocious misdeed here, than arguably splintering the community won't help anyone. As much as I would like to see both thrive, or all chans survive, this imageboard is the one I use. Whatever issues there are in this community, I would like to forgive and forget even you Kalyx.
