I was on lainchan at the time. I'll explain what happened. Audio was released by Kalyx and his friends in which they were in a call together (software unknown) and they had an ex-mod named Pet call up a guy who led another cyberpunk website and forum. I forget the guy's name and the name of his forum but it was a cyberpunk script-kiddie group that, according to no evidence presented by Kalyx and his administration, DDOS'd lainchan.org at the time. Lainchan was in fact getting DDOS'd somewhat frequently, so the entire lainchan community believed the mods pretty much without any criticism when they justified what they did to the kid who they called. So Pet calls the owner of the forum in question. It's important to note that Pet is a girl with that typical squeaky internet-cute voice. She was chosen to call the kid on purpose in order to seduce him, without question. Pet calls him and the rest of Kalyx's friends in the call are silent so that the kid doesn't know they're all in the call together, listening in. Pet starts asking the kid questions and treating him like a friend. The kid sounds young and awkward. Eventually she gets him to say really stupid soykaf. It was over a year ago so I forget what she made him say, but eventually everyone in the call starts laughing and the kid is obviously embarrassed. I briefly looked through my files for the audio but couldn't find it, sorry. What the kid said to Pet was embarrassing enough to warrant discussion on Lainchan. Lainchan was split between Kalyx fans praising Kalyx for getting at the guy who we thought was DDOSing us and a lesser minority of lainons who believed what Kalyx did was pretty unethical, sly, and wrong. In the end, it was bullying someone who we thought was DDOSing us but wasn't sure. And in response to that criticism, Kalyx made above post in question; "I'm not going to apologize... Mess with the best, die like the rest." I never thought very highly of Kalyx ever since then.

On the topic of Lainchan's history, how exactly was it sold by Kalyx to Appleman? That's something I've never quite been clear on. Did Appleman approach Kalyx, or was Kalyx openly advertising Lainchan as being for sale?
Yet Another Lainon · 2017-04-19 20:13
>>1608 Kalyx put the site up for bidding because he couldn't take it anymore. He didn't know how to be a leader and he was dealing with many personal problems in his own life, including homelessness, supposedly. I'm not sure who Appleman was before he bought Lainchan, I think he was just a typical lainon who showed up with the highest bid. Kalyx's current actions show that he regrets selling Lainchan, but deep down I believe he knows he couldn't ever lead it fruition even if some miracle happened and he owned it again. That's why he's endorsed .jp and is working with their clique. I also think he holds animosity toward Appleman (Appleman represents something he can put his blame on for the downfall of the site) but is careful not to show it.
Emmanuel · 2017-04-19 23:59
>>1609 He sold it because he didn't have the time or energy to run it, Appleman wasn't a nobody, kalyx had talked to him a fair bit and Appleman had contributed code and soykaf to the site for a while. kalyx very specifically hasn't endorsed .jp, nobody really dislikes Appleman as a person. I know you guys want internet drama, but there really isn't anything super interesting going on behind the scenes ( I say this knowing full well you conspiritards will just use it as proof that everyone is working against you )

>>1505 >>2104 >>2106 The whole thing blew over without much incident. Small altchans appear and die very quickly, and I don't think onii's (nullchan.co?) was a huge deal. His main thing is sinister.ly, and that appears to be alive and well. There was indeed some bad blood between onii and this site, and whether or not onii was directly involved with the DDOS, it would make sense if sinister.ly was involved. Though it may well have been some fuarrrk from /g/. The main reason I believe sinister.ly did it, is that I remember kalyx or darkengine contacted sinister.ly's provider, and shortly after that the DDOS'ing died down. I was put off by the whole Petsu call thing as well. I would hope that lainchan's entire staff could have come up with something more inventive than making a skiddie embarrassed. But it's not like onii was some innocent saint. Sinister.ly pretty much stopped fuarrrking with lainchan from then on. If anything, maybe onii learned not to be a sucker to cute girls. >>1557 It's pretty much become a meme to hate on kalyx now. And I guess it's not unfounded hate, he is a conceited idiot who did a bunch of things wrong. But somehow I still like him. People tend to judge imageboard admins really heavily in retrospect. The admin does some thing X, which pisses off a handful of people Y. Y fuarrrking rants until the end of time about X until everyone starts getting angry. The admin's posts and actions stand out above everyone else, because no one uses tripcodes. So while the average post is forgotten, the admin posts have some special psychological quality. I guarantee that Appleman's reputation on lainchan itself will decline in the long term. If it doesn't, then he is a god among men. For all the positive things he does and will do for the site, the sudden mistakes he makes will make everyone think he is really bad for some reason. I have yet to hear of a chan with any amount of real traffic where the people don't fuarrrking hate the admins. My point is that it's easy to yell at the person in charge of the site since they have an identity. But they're really just the owner of the establishment that makes sure things are in order. For a messageboard, the quality of the discussion and the value we get from the site are up to us. We complain like bitches about the brewing soykaf when we're actually the ones doing the brewing soykaf. Then we cry like bitches when the mods start banning us for fuarrrking brewing soykaf. It fuarrrking pisses me off. Jesus that was long-winded. I gotta get off these stimulants.

>>2112 >I guarantee that Appleman's reputation on lainchan itself will decline in the long term. It seems the decline has already begun... From the thread >>2082 linked: >I am so fuarrrking tired of this "Appleman can do no wrong" meme. He is condescending and passive aggressive as fuarrrk. No one in their right mind (or hell even Kalyx) would have promoted Appleman to be an administrator, moderator, or even janitor. >The only reason he ever acquired a role in the management of lainchan is because of him being an autistic piranha lurking in #lainchan and swimming in a sufficiently large pool of money. >I just checked my own logs. He wrote a total of twelve (12) lines in #lainchan before inquiring about and aggressively pursuing the purchase of the site the instant Kalyx mentioned he was considering selling it. Lainchan was literally sold to the first bidder. >No one knew who he was. No one could vouch for him. No one vetted him. No one even spoke to him until after the sale was final and they wanted to cozy up to their new overlord. >Appleman got what he deserved. Lainchan deserves better.

And I think his initial acceptance had much to do with the fact that he has a fuarrrking job, and that we don't have the apprehension of losing the domain name or servers when donations run out. I'm just conjecturing soykaf here, but Applesauce's biggest problems seem related to how he relates to the community. This stems from the fact that, as you've pointed out, he was more or less unknown before the sale. At the time of the sale, I decided to give Applepie a chance; my initial hope was that he would respect the community, making changes slowly but decisively with the agreement of the community, all the while being more competent than the previous owner. So far, he's struggled on the community front -- not because he isn't trying necessarily. I think PR and human interaction just isn't his strong point. Kalyx was just easier to talk to. Appleman has been around for at least 2 years. He's never been particularly talkative but he was active and people did know him. He's a decent enough guy as well. He's not great with people but there's no malice in him. Also if we're going to look at the time he deleted the board list, which was a mistake. We should compare it with the time that kalyx deleted /mega/ (or /all/ as it was then). They were both unpopular moves that pretty much nobody but themselves agreed with. The difference being that it took ages to talk kalyx round on that rather than the same day. >>2112 >I guarantee that Appleman's reputation on lainchan itself will decline in the long term. If it doesn't, then he is a god among men. Probably true. Chans tend to hate their admins. Everywhere does really. Whatever you do you can't keep everybody happy all of the time. I think his reputation has been bolstered recently by the fact that he's been directly under attack. Kalyx deleted his server, mods have caused tons of drama. In comparison, he looks great.

That may be what you would think, but that doesn't necessarily make it true. A good owner should be able to share or delegate technical operations whether or not they are technically qualified themselves. If having a fuarrrking job is the criteria you have for our owner, you have some pretty low standards. >I'm just conjecturing soykaf here, but Applesauce's biggest problems seem related to how he relates to the community. He isn't going to just suddenly learn how to handle the community. Did you read the AGM logs? I think the people at jp had the right idea, but went about the wrong way of executing it.
