Anyone got an ETA on roughly when Lainchan 2.0 will be fully operational again?
Vasya Pupkin · 2017-04-15 23:14
fuarrrk knows. Creating the boards would take 2 minutes but...
Hououin Kyouma · 2017-04-15 23:24
I'm pretty sure this is already "operational". I think the boards are being created according to necessity, as people post about a subject, the board is created.
That doesn't explain the lack of /sec/ and /feels/, though.

I'm actually super curious about this.
Admin team: What's going on in terms of board creation? It seems like the thread Seph posted is mostly resolved, with two boards still in the discussion phase, but most users satisfied with the proposed set up. Also seems like created boards haven't yet made their way to the top bar.
Is there anything the userbase can do to help further this process? I asked Appleman1234 a similar question shortly after the reset, and his response was to contribute content and participate in discussions. It seems like the board structure has more or less come into place (at the very least, there's a few boards that are unanimously requested, ie tech.) Users are also posting - and I think there may be something to be said about users not posting due to a relevant board not being created. I certainly know I've held off on some topics until an appropriate board is up. I also posted a /lit/ thread a few hours before the board was created, and have requested it to be moved twice in-thread; haven't wanted to pester a presumably very-busy Appleman1234 over a minor thing. The moderation team is still in flux.
So I want to reiterate OP's question, and ask my own: What is the status of board creation, and what does the userbase need to do (if anything) to expedite the process? There are extant threads, and Seph has mentioned that he'd like to discuss the controversial threads in a separate discussion; I've been waiting for that thread.
[b]What is the admin team's stance on being more transparent to users?[b/] This topic has been breached in IRC and in another thread. The news page is up, but lacking in content. During this rebirth process, I think it would be extremely helpful for there to be some sort of log that showcases what the admin team is doing, so the userbase has an idea of what's being done, as well as how they can contribute. Something like, "What's been done," "What's actively on the To-Do list", "What's being decided." (Admittedly, this is a terrible formation; perhaps someone more organized can think of a better format.)
I hope this doesn't rub anyone the wrong way or come across as being hypercritical. Personally, it seems like a call for help was put out shortly after the reset, but it also feels as though the ball is in the admin team's court, and outside of the actions Appleman1234 has public posted that he is taking (creating software to restore posts/threads from backup; fixing bugs), it's hard to get a sense of what's being done without pestering folks.

I honestly don't understand why all the boards aren't back by now. But after our loss you really see the population dwindle to the people that really care about this place which is very little, so I guess the admins don't really feel in any rush to get it out. But waiting around, probably thinking of ways to reinvent the wheel before implementing the same old

Real talk. It takes ages to get anything done these days. We have long and tedious bureaucratic processes that mean people just can't be bothered and Appleman's left doing everything himself and stuff, important stuff, just doesn't get done. I hate to put this so out in the open and I don't just mean to have a go, but I'm not going to sit by and watch either. He's a great admin in many ways and works harder than anyone I have ever seen for this site and these are totally fixable things but I'm sure some of you will have noticed me and others trying to get through to him that this is a big problem on IRC and I just get told that I'm an idiot who doesn't see the bigger picture, meanwhile, soykaf is going all sorts of wrong, in 6 months of collective effort we haven't managed something as fundamental and important as a backup scheme. Worse some of the mods are at the end of the their tether and going ahead starting a new site.
I'm genuinely running out of ideas and don't know what to do any more. I love this place and this community, but there's not a good reason we didn't have backups or that we don't have a full compliment of boards yet and I can't, in all honesty, say that I don't have a lot of sympathy for the people who want to start fresh in a position where they can actually get things done (it's been how long now? And the only reason we have a board other than /λ/ is because seph broke rank and just went and made /r/. Thanks seph, I think we can all agree you did the right thing). I really hoped that the site deletion and lack of backups would act as a wake up call but I was wrong, things have continued as they were before. We're still waiting on our core boards while effort is put into restoring qts with glasses threads and I'm still an untrustworthy idiot who's just trying to brew soykaf and is best treated with condescension when I try to point out these problems.
On the subject of brewing soykaf, yes, this post and me trying to get through on IRC is going to cause division and conflict but I'd rather have some conflict now that stands a hope of fixing the problems (and we do have big problems, 6 months, as many people as ever willing to help, no backup scheme, that's incredibly indicative) than sit by and wait peacefully while things rot. I understand that most of the community doesn't see these problems. You're not the people who are asked to fill out forms, do interviews and give a schedule before they can do something as simple as host the stream but, if it continues as it is, the people who do want to do these types of things and make nice content for us all are just going to decide it's not worth the effort.
Anyway, I realise I've pissed off basically everyone with this. It's a whole heap of soykaf for the community. I hate to dump it out like this without being able to offer solutions and I'd have much preferred resolving these things some other way but like I say I'm running out of ideas and I can't seem to get through. I've pissed off the mods, especially the ones for whom I just "leaked" their new domain. I know you weren't ready but everything in the open. Trust that if you give the community good information they'll make good decisions. We have to try to avoid animosity and with us or against us soykaf. We all love lain.
So yeah, please, if you're someone who's had trouble with the bureaucracy chime in, I was told this morning that my word is not enough and he'd like verification (thanks to the people who chimed in then on IRC). For my part I'm going to keep doing whatever I can. We're going to have a meeting in a week or so (a real meeting, not a rehearsal, another indication of the bureaucracy) and I will raise these things, again, and hopefully we can get some sort of real dialogue going and come to a resolution.

I don't have particularly much to write on this, currently, asides from letting you all know that steady progress is being made.
One issue is that a number of us on staff don't see value in returning old boards verbatim. It's expected that boards should have a strict and clear purpose before being recreated or made. As it's clearly defined, /sec/ is now returned.
In particular, I cite that /cult/, /feels/, and /tech/ were vague in many ways.
Now, /r/ is nowhere near full, so what's the issue with using that for a bit?

Too many people were unhappy, this is at least an oppurtinity to get things right this time around, so they are just waiting around trying to figure that out, I guess.
Maybe they don't understand how traffic works though, because this site is going to be fuarrrking dead when it's back in full.

You guys know that using /r/ isn't the same as having a dedicated board right? There is a certain tone set on a board, there is. There is an expectation for visiting, there is a tone that is cultivated by all posts in the calalogue matching that speicific tone, /r/ will never make up for /feels/. /r/ will never make up for /tech/.

>You guys know that using /r/ isn't the same as having a dedicated board right?
Yes.
>/r/ will never make up for /feels/. /r/ will never make up for /tech/.
One thing that's largely agreed upon is not naming a future board /feels/, but this is tangential.
Here's one issue with /tech/: it was vague. In the same board was discussion on system administration, fixing hardware, configuring software, posting desktops and homescreens, and even some programming. I'm curious what you think a /tech/ should focus on. If we have a /tech/-like board and a /diy/-like board, which topics would go in which?
These are important questions we're considering, which is part of the reason for the wait.

/tech/ has been around since imageboards, it has it's own community. You are fuarrrking with that community, it makes it harder to join a new imageboard. For example, first thing I ever did when I came here was go to /tech/, because it's always been my "home board". That being said, every imageboards /tech/ is different, because the users of each imageboard are different. Splitting up /tech/ splits up an established community that makes sense to a lot of people, it will hurt the flow of new users, and after this, you are going to need a steady flow.
If you have a /tech/-like board it will just become /tech/, for my reasons stated, it's an established community. The only thing you accomplish is it makes it harder to join lainchan, just keep /tech/, in my opinion.
As for /feels/, I fail to see why you need to change it? I mean, it's a specific type of discussion I've not found has ever had a home in any other imageboard. After initially going to /tech/, it's what I went to next, and what got me to stay. That's what you want, you want boards that are familiar, and then boards that are unique. You help new users in with these established boards that work on an established standard, and then you keep them by being unique, you want to be better than other imageboards, not just different.
That being said, these standard boards are important for more than just new users, /tech/ is succesfull for a reason. It's pretty broad, sure, but why do you need to split it up? That's what threads are for. Establish that this place is for technology specific threads, and then have all sorts of technology threads. Having a consumer electronics board, security, do it your self, stickers/desktops board, it's just silly. You don't need to split all these things up. You will get four boards of three users rather than one board with more, also destroying any chance at a steady flow of new users. You would be destroying an established standard, killing off flow of new users, and simply fragmenting discussion, not improving it.
I say keep /tech/, keep /feels/.

To be honest, /tech/ always just seemed like a containment board to me, specifically aimed at keeping the unwashed masses out of /λ/, /diy/ and later /sec/ as well.
Leto Atreides I · 2017-04-17 06:39
This is really dragging out. Why don't you just restore the boards to what they were, and then worry about changing them later?
Eldon Tyrell · 2017-04-17 06:50
If lainchan doesn't bring back some more boards in the next week I am going to find a better chan.

Please see the update made at https://lainchan.org/news.html.
Can you define what you mean by "fully operational" ? If you mean the same as before the wipe, then I don't think Lainchan will ever be the same as before.
Otherwise I don't have an ETA at this time.
But if I had to make one up on the spot in order to answer this post, then the answer would be 1 week from the date of the Annual General Meeting e.g 2017-04-30 UTC 00:00.

Where were you when this was all a secret plot designed by Appleman to destroy lain-chan, get us to denounce kalyx, and then rebuild a new, soykaftier site.

So what you're basically saying is that, roughly speaking, Lainchan.org should be in a good position a week into May?
I'm fuarrrking out of here dude.

Nah, this is one of the things he came round on. Notice the drama in the other threads. It's still gonna take a bit of time to do all the soykaf needs doing before you make a board (stickies, actually working out which ones to make), but it should be a lot faster than originally planned.
Morpheus · 2017-04-18 00:16
lainchan 2.0 is operational. it's called lainchan.jp.

lainchan.jp did more in 1 day than this site has in 1 week.

'cause the creators just did whatever they wanted ; while appleman seems more concerned about giving the time for a consensus to appear on what lainchan should be.
lainchan.org is up, if you have interesting things to say, go and make a thread on /r/ or somewhere.
/lit/ and /sec/ ain't even hidden any more.
Don't just wait for a board with the exact description you want to appear ; post content and boards can be created accordingly latter.
Take your life and your board in your own damned hands for Lain's sake.
