Requests for Features

I haven't been lurking as long as most people, coming here from another Chan that most people you frequented here are now staying and I already love this place, it's like various other anonymous boards but without cancer, or at least for now.
So I'm just sharing my opinions on features to make lurking easier, I apologize if I mention a feature that could be added or changed on the user side.
To get started: Keyboard shortcuts, simple things as pressing "r" refreshes the board and thread, be able to open the reply box without scrolling to the top of the thread and clicking a post, and the ability to quickly hide threads from the catalog. And speaking of catalog, I was surprised I wasn't able to do this:
Post a thread, Is there something I'm missing? Really interested for why people can't create a thread when view in the objectively superior mode of catalog.
Those are some of my ideas, interested in hearing some of yours
Dozer · 2017-04-15 20:07

Some people write in the top box. Or it would be an issue when opening a thread. Well It could be made that the keyboard action is only active when all text boxes are empty.
Nobody special · 2017-04-15 20:30
Adding another point that deals with catalog mode, is the fact that when I move to a different board like from /q/ to /r/ it kicks me out and I'm back into the default having to select catalog again. Really annoying, should be made that your default view changes once you choose catalog or the other.
Nell · 2017-04-15 20:51
I see where you're coming from and I'm going to say it, 4Chan features are better than Lain by miles. And I would love for it that we take the features that apply to us from 4Chan and add a little bit more on top. Going through this place is insufferable compared to 4Chan.
Tyrell Wellick · 2017-04-15 21:03
>>1197
It'd be nice if you could elaborate on what you want to implement.
I believe it's an exaggeration to say that going through this site is 'insufferable'.
I honestly think lainchan's features (or lack of them) are enough to give a pleasant lurking experience. I wouldn't like to see it bloated nor do I want it to become another imageboard.
The Oracle · 2017-04-15 23:20
I personally don't think lainchan needs any of that.
>hide a thread
You can already do this. See that minus button next to posts, try clicking it.
>r to refresh
I'm going to tell you a secret, most browsers have a built in hotkey that does just this,F5. Also most browser's support Ctrl+r.
>objectively superior mode of catalog
This is incorrect. Catalog view is completely against the mentality of an image board. If a thread isn't on page 1 or 2 then interest in it is probably gone. Especially on a slow moving site like this.

Implement /boards. Vichan supports having channame.tld/boards.html as a list of all boards. Unfortunately, lainchan.org/boards.html is a 404. Could this be changed? It would be good for discovery.
Cowboy · 2017-07-03 19:58
The Serial Experiments Lain BOOTLEG duo cd release among music tracks and minigames also had a set of various icon sized images featuring characters and symbols from the show.
Lainchan could employ them to strengthen references to the show and the world there. Icons are wholly neutral, they don't carry any controversial ideologies beyond those of the show so usage shouldn't cause conflict by itself imo.
A possible usage scenario could be to have them be randomized for every new thread in the starting post. Another usage would that of typical flag feature with users picking what and if they want to use.
I attach a screenshot of the icon files. It can be shared it if the idea is plausible.

As I understand, it's currently impossible to embed a Youtube video in a post (forgive me if I missed something). I tried entering its URL in the "remote" option but the site would not accept it, so this is the feature I'm requesting.
Vasya Pupkin · 2017-09-02 21:29

That's something I'd rather not see in Lainchan. Doesn't that require using some Google assets to do?
Regardless, youtube is just something that goes against the general attitude of lainchan to me.
Sipho Nkosi · 2017-09-02 21:36
>>4702
Also, supporting something like MediaGoblin would be different, so why not that?
Vasya Pupkin · 2017-09-03 20:43
>>4704
It doesn't require any Google assets. It can be done easily in a few lines of HTML like this:
<iframe width="420" height="315"
src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SHz8_EDDpiw?controls=0">
</iframe> Whether it goes against the spirit of Lainchan or not, people already post a lot of links to Youtube videos on boards such as /mu/, so adding an option to embed them would not really introduce anything new. It'd just make things a little bit more convenient for anyone who frequents that board.
>>4705
Because sites running MediaGoblin don't have as much content as Youtube. I think it would be hard for anyone to use them as their go-to for sound media. Make no mistake, I just want to make sharing content we find on the web easier. I don't intend to use it as a social medium for my own videos, and I think this will be the case with everyone else 99% of the time.
Appleman1234 · 2017-09-03 22:52
>>4702

It isn't impossible, vichan supports and even has dynamic javascript loading that only does the youtube embedd if the video is clicked on, but the embedding functionality in vichan and lainchan has traditionally been disabled, with the preference to give the user the option to choose whether to load an external site or not.
I am looking into functionality that also provides the option of taking URL in remote upload option and converting the url to a webm or other suitable attachment, but even if that functionality is developed, it still takes time and resources and isn't likely to be enabled on this installation immediately.
BloodCat · 2017-11-04 01:34
Have IDs been discussed before ?
I've always found that they make it easier to follow arguments, as you don't need to redefine your stance or point to your older posts every time.
We already have random names with each post, I imagine it would be pretty easy to make it so each IP keeps its own name within a thread.
Of course it would be trivial to evade, but that's not an issue as long as IDs are used to facilitate discussion rather than avoid samefagging.
Yes, there is already a name field for this, but :
- either I keep the same name all the time and become a disgusting name user
- or I must come up with a new name every thread and I will still be called a name user, also too much effort.
Pulse · 2017-12-11 09:24
>>5088
>too much effort
Sounds like a personal problem to me. Why subject everyone to soykafty thread ids when you yourself, if you insist on being identified, could solve the problem by typing in a few characters?
Erik Johansson · 2018-01-12 21:07
>>5149
>soykafty thread ids
Why do you think IDs are bad ?
I was bringing that up because, while I've often read people badmouthing the idea, nobody ever brought an actual point against the concept.
So I was thinking it was maybe just brewing soykaf and the fair folks on lainchan wouldn't mind it.
But I don't want to impose anything of course.
>if you insist on being identified
The thing is, if I'm the only one doing it, I'm identifying myself across threads, not just in the current one, which is a limit I don't want to cross.
If it was at least a check-in option, I could hope that enough people would do it to anonymize me across threads.
Anyway, that was an old post and nobody seemed to show interest, so that probably won't happen anyway.
Wasn't there another thread discussing this too, security-wise ? I never really read it in details, I don't know what their conclusions were.
Arisu Mizuki · 2018-01-19 20:41
>>5088
>- either I keep the same name all the time and become a disgusting name user
>- or I must come up with a new name every thread and I will still be called a name user, also too much effort.
Third option: if you don't want anonymous discussion, don't post on an anonymous imageboard.
IDs break anonymity. Anonymity is important because it keeps ideas separate from their authors. Someone could say something stupid at the start of a thread and not have their opinions dismissed for the rest of the thread because of that mistake. Every last post is judged on merit, not who wrote it. This is especially important on slower imageboards as threads may entail lots of discussion over a long period of time.
Discussion is fine without it. The only time it causes issues is when three people are engaging in an argument and one accuses the other two of samefagging, but IDs don't stop those accusations in practice since the accuser just assumes the same user is proxying.
Redefining your stance and pointing to old posts occurs even with names. I've seen it often enough on forums where people will quote their old posts, or say, "As I said, ....". You only need to redefine your stance or point to an older post if the readers aren't reading attentively enough (not fixed with names) or if your stance wasn't clear enough (not fixed with names).
IP-based identification is also inaccurate, since IPs change often enough and users can post from different IPs or multiple users can post from the same IP. So if you use IDs alone to track people through a thread, there's a reasonable expectation of error, especially since lainchan is fairly slow and it's reasonable for users to post from several different IPs during one thread's lifetime

More stickers when :(
Hitomi · 2019-09-22 21:17
Technically, these are features, but they don't feel like features. They are something that I'm requesting for lainchan to have, though.
I know that lainchan publishes some relevant data on /donate.html. That page, regarding the costs, only shows the monthly server cost (presently, (USD?) $55). That seems incomplete. I know that there are moderators, I suspect that there is a developer to work on some requested features. I'm curious to know how much of what sorts of labor go into running lainchan. I'm interested in donating to lainchan, but it's difficult for me to donate if I'm unaware of how the donations are being used. It's also difficult for me to donate if it seems as though the full costs aren't published. I understand that it would involve more labor to track and publish detailed relevant accounting, and that lainchan's monthly donations are fairly small, so it might not be worth tracking and publishing detailed relevant accounting. I think it woudn't take too much labor to track and publish a complete cost for this (or last) month, in addition to the regular server cost, and the running donation totals (it would be nice if the running donation totals were also presented summed together).
Appleman1234 · 2019-09-24 01:24
>>6566
It isn't incomplete as per >>6581, yes there are moderators they are volunteers and not paid for their time, nor are their metrics or quotas to ensure they have a minimum time allocation per week or month.
The primary developer for most of Lainchan's custom software is me. I work on it in my spare time (when I am not at my day job) and on a volunteer / best effort basis. Other volunteer developers are welcome, but seem to be rare.
(Except for Lainradio, which is developed by barrucadu (https://github.com/barrucadu/lainonlife).
The non custom stuff (Mumble, InspirICD, IceCast, etc) all have upstream you can donate to if you want to.
Simply put we don't have the metrics you are asking for. Setting up the metrics collection to gather the information you are asking for accurately would not only be more costly than any donation you are likely to make, but it would also an annoyance and possible privacy issue with our existing volunteer staff.
The answer for your question is $0 additional costs and $0 donations for this month, but that isn't the answer you want to hear. Currently as there are no donations being donated, there are no donations being used.
Previously when we used to sell stickers and get donations via that method, all donations went to server costs (monthly hosting fee, and DNS registration), as all other costs are $0 because they are volunteer time.
When lainstore goes live, the donation page will be updated again, and I will probably make a donation history page to keep track of historic donations better, but until there is a reason to allocate donated funds to anything other than server costs, the breakdown you are asking for isn't really required.
I am happy to have discussion with you if you want to make a donation with conditions or you want to donate but only for a specific purpose.

Shorthand chan links: i.e. similar to how you can >>postnumber for internal posts, I'd want to be able to link to other chans by doing something like >>chan/board/thread/post, where chan is the domain name of the chan, or a conventional (i.e. according to the arbitrary choice of the chan that enables such inter-chan shorthand links) nickname, (board, thread, post) is the identifier of the (board, thread, post) according the target chan.
E.g. rather than typing out "https://www.lainchan.org/q/res/6649.html#6657", one could type >>lainchan/q/6649/6657, which is sufficient to find the post within the chan.
One might also allow, somehow, for the person that clicks the link to be able to choose from alternative interfcaces to the target chan. e.g. if there were a booru-like interface, and a hierarchical baord/thread/post interface.

More of a proposal than a request as I'm thinking of doing it myself with a userscript or somesuch:
>Post drafts.
>>>/hum/25013
>You come to lainchan because the average post body character count is - I'd guess - at 500 characters or so. People don't come to lainchan to give out their unsolicited 5-word opinion on something but to interact with the Zeitgeist instead. There a few other places out there like this, the last fortresses of information and in the near future the tide will turn and our opinions, unless extensively crafted and actually useful, will not be welcome.
>E-mail helped me understand this, well, mutt helped me understand this. See in mutt you make a message by creating a file on the filesystem which can be used as a draft for you to revise over time. This is how a message is ought to be. Our communications have evolved up to political, industrial leaders and intellectuals writing physical letters - or book messages even - to one another in spans of months and years then rapidly devolved to a literal "NO U" altercations
To expand on this notion;
1. Lainchan is only good because its focus is ideas, not events or people, because lainons coming to lainchan are focused on ideas, not events or people
2. Thing about ideas is they are heavy, they need to be crystalized, thought out and revisited
3. Allowing typed in post content to be drafted into localStorage will permit lainons to temporarily abandon a heavy idea and revisit it after a break
4. Perhaps even forget about the idea only to be surprised that yeah they've wanted to say something about that topic on that board but they had to do something else or got tired typing
5. Technically nothing's preventing someone from typing an idea out in a text file on their machine but that means handling a local document which is a chore
Making this post to throw the idea to the wolves, no plans to start on the implementation as of now.

There's a potential security issue with allowing Lainchan to access such storage, isn't there? I don't browse Lainchan with JavaScript enabled, so this wouldn't benefit me, but I already just do this manually where I need to. Not every post needs a draft, like this one, but it's also easy enough to get up and leave the browser for however long before returning to the comment field.

>Necroreplies by well intentioned anons who didn't bother to check the date of the last reply to a thread
I guess this actually improves the posting rate, so there's a disincentive for the mods to apply the obvious fix of expressing dates as English statements like "4 days and 3 hours ago".
But since threadwatchers don't work as reply notifiers like they do on 4chan, the intended recipient of the necroreply might not see it for years.
Perhaps expressing dates in English might cause would be necroposters to post in more recent threads, without lowering the posting rate? Maybe the posting rate would actually increase as a result, since original posters are more likely to reply to replies to their posts.

I want to bump this. A lainchan tor hidden service would be great. This way tor users can post on lainchan without having to use exit nodes since they can harm a tor user's privacy. Hosting a tor hidden service is rather easy, and could be done for the irc and mumble servers as well.

Hi, any chance of adding a thumbnail image option for YouTube embeds in lainchan?
Notice how in a lainchan instance, if a thread has a lot of YoutTube embeds it gets extremely laggy to load and browse through
>4chon.me/gm/res/6791.html
Whereas in a vichan instance, it's not laggy because it only retrieves "0.jpg" thumbnails and only loads the player upon click
>sushigirl.us/tunes/res/1.html
Acid Burn · 2020-11-27 20:17
>>9258
I don't want linking to youtube to be pleasant or convenient here. I'd prefer people not link to it at all. This is the reason no embedding happens, because all of those thumbnails are requests directly to youtube, and thus inform Google of who views threads when. fuarrrk Google.

>Other solutions to prevent automation deletion of threads from flooding are being investigated
Any news on this?
I still think my idea is pretty slick - make board pages twice as long, but then simply hide the second bottom half from users. That way whenever a thread is deleted, another thread which was previously bumped off rises from the nether. However, that thread would've still been inaccessible and 404'd before it rose up.
I'm also a proponent of adding at least 5 more pages to boards which currently only have 5 pages.
Batou · 2020-12-14 08:47
>>9389
Although when I think about it, the current amount of board pages would make sense if there's a financial reason for it.
I don't know how much more it would cost to host more pages (hidden or otherwise), but lainchan is pretty rare for it's non-soykaftiness and variety of discussions. That's why IMO it's a shame for old discussions here to get bumped off so easily.

Greetings appleman and friends.
I have a simple request that I would like you to evaluate (and provide feedback if it is in the negative as to why since I'd be curious to hear about it). Please add: webm, webp, and jpe to the list of accepted extensions for uploaded files. jpe is just an alias for jpg. It's mostly for convenience since a lot of stupid pictures I pull have jpe and I always end up having to rename them when I want to upload. You might already have webm, but I haven't checked and won't spam to do so. webp is definitely not currently permitted, I just had to convert a file.
Many regards! If you want, I can create a patch/pull and upload it to the git repo or post it here if that would incline you more, just let me know.
Appleman1234 · 2020-12-22 00:53
>>9459
There are two parts to this. One is the configuration change to add the extensions to the allowed extensions.
WEBM was already allowed.
I have made the change to the configuration to add .webp and .jpe .
The second part is changing the thumbnailing logic in post.php to do the right thing as opposed to the default thing. Which I just live patched and tested.
Now webp , jpe and webm should work. Please test in /test/.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Appleman's optimal Lainchan is sort of a user published library, a place where a user, without needing any special permissions can look up a particular topic and see what Lainons have to say about it, and maybe even assert their own opinions about the matter, a place where people can professionally debate the popular issues of the day without needing to reveal your identity or powerlevel. I believe that an imageboard such as yours has no room for brewing soykaf, which surely can help a Lainon find what they need quickly and without diversions. But far too many worthy posts have been destroyed, either from the post itself being off topic, or the image, or the thread, or a majority of the other posts. To many the social aspect is lost as well as the entertainment aspect. I propose that instead of wasting the effort an OP put into a post and the pleasure that a casual viewer will recieve, you create a separate board with global rules 0,1,7,8,9,10, and 11 still applying, and disregarding rules 2,3,4,5 and 6. Popular threads and posts can go here instead of being outright deleted. Alternatively, you can create a board which "deleted" threads can go in, and after one week the entire board gets cleared. It is frustrating to want to write a reply or get an answer then suddenly the thread gets deleted.
Spike Spiegel · 2021-01-12 21:21
I find having to press the image, instead of the thread title, to go to thread from catalog, counterintuitive. Perhaps have all the thread-headers link to the thread? Also, listing time of last bump would be convenient, too.
Appleman1234 · 2021-01-13 00:00
>>9621
You beliefs are your beliefs, but they are not mine, and I don't share your definition of an optimal Lainchan or even the concept of an optimal Lainchan or even that the concept of Appleman's Lainchan are even relevant.
You asked to be corrected if you were "wrong", so this is my correction. You don't speak for me and your proposal isn't the correct way to resolve what you describe as worthy posts being destroyed.
If you want post not to be deleted, then follow Rule 1 If you break the rules we will delete your post. Do it repeatedly and you'll be derezzed. and it won't be.
We are not making a special board where the rules don't apply just because you can't be bothered to follow them.
>>9624
Happy to do this customization.
Donna Hawthorne · 2021-01-13 07:12
>>9625
To be clear I don't make a lot of posts and I am perfectly willing to follow the rules, which I have always done. Before I wrote my previous post, I had just submitted a reply to a thread in which many of the posts violated rules 3 and 4, and when the page refreshed lo and behold everything is gone. Sometimes it isn't always clear when posts are going to get deleted. I hope you can understand my frustration, if only the thread was locked for a day and then deleted the Lainon I replied to would have recieved my reply. If it wasn't clear before, I would like to know beforehand if the thread is going to be deleted. If you don't like the idea of a deleted board, there are options like marking threads for deletion and locking them, didn't you used to do that?
>We are not making a special board where the rules don't apply just because you can't be bothered to follow them.
You misunderstand me, this board is where deleted posts can go before they get permanently deleted. This way, when someone hasn't been following their thread very closely they can check on it before it completely vanishes. I suggested one week for the 'sleepy' threads that get deleted, (like the Haibane Renmei thread on /vis/) but I suppose it makes more sense to delete after a day. When they go in the board they can become locked. I apologize, I didn't make it very clear before.

So, getting to the point - is it possible to send a POST request to post on Lainchan (instead of doing it on the webpage using a browser)? I think it should be, but sending it to linktothread+"/post" or linktothread+"/post.php" gives me a 403.

I'm sure a lot of us would be more comfortable posting if there anti-stylometry was implicitly applied to posts. After all, lainons are generally pro-privacy. It could even be something as simple as canonicalizing posted text, and substituting "interesting" words (e.g. those with a high Scrabble value) for common alternatives. Obviously, that's a bit of work as any existing code isn't really "there yet". It's just a jumping off point.

The Oracle · 2021-04-16 06:39
I think that Lainchan should have a feature that temporarily deletes (or temporarily marks as spoiler) the image of a post if it is reported specifically as CP, porn or gore, and only re-adds the image after it is reviewed by a moderator or admin. And after that it can't be reported again. Its potential for abuse is much lesser than quarantining the entire post (even less so if the image is just marked as spoiler), and I think that what bothers most people about those two is being forced to look at the thumbnail or browse a different board.

Appleman1234 · 2021-07-26 14:26

From WIkipedia Otherkin are a subculture of people who identify as not entirely human.
Humanity and /hum/ like it, include and do not exclude otherkin, as well as other identity based derivations of alternate identitykin concepts, because the map is not the territory.
Also humanity has at least 3 definitions, the first referring to humans as a collective regardless of identity or belief system. The second referring to traits commonly shared by humanity, e.g. kindness / humane and the third referring to the human condition.
Identity and identity expression, experience are all parts of the human condition.
It seems it only you that define otherkin as not human, rather than being transhuman in terms of their identity and human biologically.

To be honest, this chan interface is too unoptimized for neither phoneposting or widescreens or hi-dipi displays. Layout concept is still from 1280*1024 era, works on ~1000px wide windows, terrible on anything wider or narrower. Alicechan did better.
- Text wrapping should be fixed on posts with files, description contains useless unix timestamp, aspect ratio.
- Catalog entries are unscrollable which makes Ctrl+F-ing bothersome (I have to look up page source), good you have a server-side search, but it doesn't work on all boards simultaneously.
- Additionally, catalog link should be located on top of each thread near [ Return / Go to bottom ], or both Return and Catalog should be incorporated into board title above.
- And collapse the posting form please, it takes ridiculous amount of space.
- Actually, each new opened thread page is 3/4 filled with garbage not related to reading this thread, OP post is contained in the remaining 1/4.

As per https://lainchan.org/static/LainchanAGMTranscript.txt, from 2017, the major reasons we don't have an onion service is because of possible violation of our hosting provider's AUP, and because of the additional work required moderate spam from a hidden / onion service, if a direct mirror of the site was hosted.

I made this post here >>>/sec/17591 I tried to break the link but it still detected the yahoo link and I think the problem here is your site still makes href links available which is bad if someone who isn't using http referer remover clicks the link it will report to the Big Tech that the anon who clicked had been browsing lainchan and much worse since this is like an open chatroom the big tech can assume that the timeof_when_it_was_clicked == the_poster_of_the_link or the next_reply_to_the_post_of_that_thread
This is the same concept as just the dns logs can break identity of someone's anonymous imageboard posts as the lurker making the dns request can be correlated to whatever the next post of the same timestamp will be on the public imageboard - it's public and even more reason to disable external hrefs.
I don't want to be someone's problem later on as I like to refer external links to my posts and have someone click a Big Tech link and end up on someone's list like some AUS anon or something.
I think 8 already blocks these clickable links for anonymity measure.

Can we have rel="noreferrer" over links if they ever become links?
I know this is more of a software side and can break on its own but if there was ever no plans to removing auto link generation then adding a rel="noreferrer" is the best compromise so at least the links clicked will not be tied back to the link clicker revealing that they've been to lainchan in that very same thread in the ref header sent to the external site.
This is more of an html thing so I guess some obscure or homemade browsers might ignore it entirely but I guess that's much better than nothing?
We already have rel="nofollow" but I think that's barely useful, at least rel="nofollow noreferrer" should suffice maybe for this request?

Something to weed out low-quality posts in technical discussions. It should be on a per-thread basis, and enabled by the thread creator.
It might look like a programming-based captcha. Could be as simple fixing a typo or a trivial bug. I'm not aware of any existing implementations.

Ban discord links and other forms of discord ads. Lainchan already has an IRC for real time chatting, and Discord channels would split the community. The IRC and the imageboard complement each other.

Cyclic threads.
I severely doubt I have to explain what a cyclic thread is but nonetheless, I'll explain it and then spoiler it. hachichan has a feature such that a thread can contain a certain number of posts, but then, when the thread exceeds its post-limit, new posts are automatically added, it's just that the older posts at the top of the thread are also automatically removed.
The reason why I want cyclic threads is because what I really want is a containment thread for all of the whining about the internet. I desire a single, cyclic, "Internet Grievances" thread and I want people that whine outside of the thread to get their thread locked and to receive a warning. /q/ forbids complaining about Lainchan's quality, but then completely permits unlimited complaining about the quality of the rest of the internet. I mean, I don't know why you'd ban complaining about Lainchan's quality, but I have to imagine it's because the whining is annoying. Well, I think internet-whining, in general, is getting a bit annoying. Either that, or, and I have to consider this, I spend too much time here and so my sense of the scale of the whining is magnified. I definitely intend to dial my time here significantly back, such that I only visit once a month.
Appleman1234 · 2022-07-18 00:35

Lainchan already supports cyclic threads, we just don't use them very often. Because they are another thing you have shepherd users into using.

Would it be possible to add something like forced naming or tagging to certain mentally unstable/obsessive posters if you don't/can't ban them effectively?
There are more than a few very interesting individuals on this site that make the same kind of weird/low effort/incomprehensible/any combination of the three posts and threads about their pet topics all the time, and either just ban evade whenever they get derezzed or aren't getting derezzed in the first place because they barely stay inside the rules and banning being not very effective.
Having them being labelled while being allowed to continue their posting would allow other users to easily filter them while hopefully making it less likely for then to evade again because they get to keep posting, which is all these people really want to do, most of them don't care or even recognise if people are engaging with them or not.

>>11182
Yes it would possible, but as >>11183 indicates, it wouldn't be 100% or even 50% reliable without additional changes to the identity system detection used by Lainchan.
Using the current functionality without changes, would just result in a poor mans version of the feature that upsets users.
If I have the time I will see what I can do about improving the identity detection, as well as the ability for posts to be tagged in general (kind of like a booru, but not )

It would be nice if search.php allowed for multiple boards, or all boards, to be searched at once. My suggestion is either replacing the board drop down with a checkbox list or allowing a filter in the search itself.

would also be nice to have per-thread feed-- better than thread watcher or bunch of tabs open. and then, DO NOT hide this feature, do NOT make it some easter egg, place a "feed" button on board front page next to "catalog" and "home", and place thread-specific feed button at the bottom of thread page next to "home", and make mention of it in the faq. wage slave them everywhere (make a wage slave announcement) because being able to reply in two days rather than two weeks without manually checking the thread is a very big game changer.

+1 for the math board, with |math| tags.
There are many people on lainchan interested in discussing math, you have a few threads on /lit/, some discussion on /lambda/ and some other mentions here and there. If there was an actual board for it people would all go there and be active instead of being stranded in random places.
A general science board is too risky IMO, you might end up with 4ch/sci/ and /hum/ people, spamming threads about conspiracies, iq and other mindless bait.
I think a math board with a few threads about other sciences (physics, chem, any applied math to real world problem) could work.
I'd personally volunteer to be a janny if the issue is the lack of people for a new board.

User waits until 10:40:00 to re-attempt posting "XYZ", but the text "XYZ" is still blocked.
But user has no problem posting "123" at 10:35:00, presumably because "XYZ" has been added to some database as spam text.

Please upload the zines as .epub, my single core cpu is not a big fan of the bloated .pdf format. I look like this and say this.

can you add a language enhancement for rumble.com? all the spammers seem to love it recently
H.R. Giger · 2025-04-02 14:32
can we have a similar rule like heyuri rule 8 where posts with 4chan buzzwords gets deleted?
i'm not suggesting copying every line but maybe deleting posts with buzzwords and ***mer stuff to discourage it. i don't think warnings and filters are enough and i'd rather have less but quality visitors than more 4chan tourists than think every imageboard is 4chan and don't respect site culture, the're annoying as hell and lower evert thread quality everytime.
Ender · 2025-04-03 00:49
>>13152
can you explain how enforcement of this would be different than it already is?
the pepe/wojak spammers know they're soykaf posting and making an explicit rule about them might give the 16 year olds even more of a complex. it would be funny to start banning people for rule 0 when their posts are bad.
the main difference I see is rule d more implicitly includes multi paragraph bait like a quarter of /hum/ threads are (and spilling into diy and tech) and rule e is concerned with greentext. but I don't think greentext is that much of a problem?
Armitage · 2025-04-03 01:33
>>13155
i didn't mean to copy over the entire rule. rule c and d would be fine already, and afaik now they don't get deleted or even filtered at all, that's what can change. personally i would enforce the entire rule, but this is just a suggestion.

The low effort posters don't usually stick around, but they are still quite annoying since there are a lot of them, so even if each one is only making a single post, it adds up. Probably could be solved by just doing some kind of sentiment analysis on the first post from an IP, where if it has a sufficiently negative sentiment and is sufficiently short, we can safely assume that it's an unproductive post and basically shadowban that post.
Also, based and cringe don't really seem to be a problem on this site (as of now, hopefully it stays that way), but maybe if a post is mostly buzzwords it getting filtered to "bzz bzzzz bzzz" or something would be funny.
>>13161
For example, this guy's post has 43 words, 19 of the words are "content words" (words that aren't pronouns or articles or common verbs), of those 19 content words 8 are buzzwords ("go back" "Reddit" "hugbox" "seethe" "muh" "toxic" "troons"), 11 if you include "board culture" and "tards". So his buzzword percent would be 42-58%, depending on which words you want to count as buzzwords.
So then we would set a threshold, possibly linearly related to the size of the post, and any posts with a buzzword percent above this threshold gets turned into mosquito buzzing.

>the low effort posters don't usually stick around
they mostly don't. i hope that one guy whos creepily obsessed with Spice Bear gets shown the door soon. or kills himself when his rumble influencer goddess rejects him. there should really be a filter for rumble.com links to be honest..
>sentiment analysis language enhancer
honestly a good idea, it would require more coding however and i feel like there's other ambitious programming goals the site is behind on..
>ip based reputational system
ehh i know a chan that tried that and it didn't achieve much besides preventing a very particular spammer from posting revenge porn (he still posted other soykaf), and basically making the site more reddit. in the past VPNs and tor were default denied image permissions from lainchan i wonder if something similar could be implemented again now/

what are you basing that off of
I have compelling evidence that sometimes high effort posters low effort post but I guess I'd be willing to believe that 75+% of low effort posts are by posters who never effortpost

buzzwordposting really pisses me off. always thought words should be treated the same as users - spam too much, and you get derezzed.

Wheres the board where I can talk about anime and nippon?
Appleman1234 · 2025-04-18 16:28
>>13180
If you are actually discussing anime because of its art style or animation or storytelling use /vis/ , other wise use /r/.
For stuff about Japan, use /r/ or /hum/ (if it is about culture or people).

Hey appleman, can we get a general / stickied / something "FRIENDSHIP DISCUSSION" thread on /hum/
Currently we have like 5+ threads discussing various aspects of friendship with varying levels of quality (e.g: how to make friends online/offline- how to keep friends- how to deal with too few or too many friends- etc). To try and stem the constant tide of friend-threads, can we just get a friendship general to pile all this stuff in one place?
Pros:
- less churning of /hum/ threads to the /friendship/ plague
- cleaner /mega/
- potentially higher quality discussion from post-concentration
Cons:
- None.
nice digits

I will see what consolidation can be done, some of the threads are separate enough to not be consolidated, but other threads probably should be. I would rather not make a new general, but instead consolidae existing threads then sticky one of those.

Perma-banning Tor exit nodes is completely redundant and it only stops future well-intentioned Tor posters from leaving content onto this site. May you do something about it? Creating an onion address seems like the easiest way out.

Testing. Are they banning Tor now?
Well-intentioned Tor poster here, I don't abuse Tor and I reported many of those CSAM ads using Tor.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, Tor isn't banned, but certain tor nodes have bans from spam abuse and take a while to get ban appealed. Thanks for your patience )

It has been 8 years since this request was made but still it would be nice to have.
Nguoi La · 2025-11-11 06:22
This probably has been requested before, but editing one's own reply would make it possible to improve the quality of it.
Obviously this would open up the possibility of maliciously changing the overall message of a thread; therefore, I propose these limiting rules:
- Posts can only be edited for 48h.
- There is a public or non-public diff log for each post.
- Mods can revert changes of a post.
This can also open up the possibility of letting people fix posts from others, as long as they don't change the underlying message. Mods could decide on that; a public diff log would obviously spare a lot of outrage in that case.
Sadly this would also make the attackable surface to this site bigger, so that's kind of a bummer.
Nguoi La · 2025-11-11 06:43
A few months ago I saw a CP image in Mega. Isn't there a public hash database or API for detecting CSAM? Automatically checking each image before it gets posted would spare this site from possibly getting attacked by the public. But maybe those hash checks are already in place, and I'm just yapping.

If this pedo soykaf doesn't get fixed soon, I will leave this site. It's getting obvious that the admins here don't give a soykaf about CP. honestly disgusting behavior. Everyone who thinks that CP is ok should reconsider their value to this planet; maybe everyone else would be better off without you.

first of all im new here and idk if this is the correct thread to ask this, but would it be appropriate to make a new thread for banners (the faq mentions to make one if it does not exist, but i dont really see people making them)
i have liked lainchan so far and would like to contribute in some way other than threads, but would idk if other people would create banners (or if they are added anyomre)
please give your inputs on this ^.^
