REPORT BUGS HERE
Appleman1234 · 2017-04-13 10:30
Please report all bugs here.
Please search the thread before posting, if someone has already posted a bug you have found, then please reply to their post.
What is a bug ?
A bug is something that should work but doesn't. A bug is not a missing feature, the feature has to be actually be present but its implementation has to be not working correctly.
No matter what the bug is, we will always want to know the same information:
What did you try to do?
What steps did you take to do that?
What did you expect to happen?
What happened instead?
One or more of those may seem stupid or self-explanatory to you, but it’s extremely helpful to us if you take the time to write it all out. Don’t assume we know anything! Simply saying that something “doesn’t work” isn’t very helpful; spell it out for us as simply and clearly as possible.
Any supporting information you can think to add will be appreciated. Attach anything you think might be helpful.
This includes screenshots with the wrong behavior or problem circled using your favourite image editor.
See http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html for more information on how to make a good bug report.
If the bug you have found is in the lainchan software itself, and you feel comfortable using Github, then you can make a Github issue https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/issues/new.

Uploads appear to be broken. I tested on /r/ and on /lam/, with different files (3 pdfs of different sizes, all of which within limits.) Reported by another user ( >>972 ).
I have tried refreshing and clearing browser cache (also closing and reopening browser)
Here is the message I received:
"The server took too long to submit your post. Your post was probably still submitted. If it wasn't, we might be experiencing issues right now -- please try your post again later. Error information:"
[see next post, body too long]
if there's anything else i can provide to be helpful, let me know - i didn't follow the format or include screenshots, but seems like this is the sum of the relevant info

not sure why it keeps formatting like this, nor if posting this html is actually helpful, but there you go.
second bug i've encountered is, after making a regular in a thread on /q/, ~20 seconds after posting and going back to /mega/, i get an error dialog of:
"Invalid Color Field" with an option to select "Ok".
Pris · 2017-04-13 12:14
So Mono E. Lain Cyber is broken because the content security policy on the web server doesn't allow outbound requests to imgur.com. There's only two images, maybe we could just rehost them?
https://i.imgur.com/OUHu2ki.jpg and https://i.imgur.com/UebGaj5.png are the images
Drifter · 2017-04-13 13:21
The footer isn't aligned. When you get into a thread it aligns, but in /mega/ or in a board it disaligns.

Refused to load the image 'https://www.lainchan.org/static/OUHu2ki.jpg' because it violates the following Content Security Policy directive: "img-src 'self' https://lainzine.neocities.org/img/".

Database error: SQLSTATE[HY000] [1135] Can't create a new thread (errno 11 "Resource temporarily unavailable"); if you are not out of available memory, you can consult the manual for a possible OS-dependent bug
Boris Grishenko · 2017-04-13 22:13
.jpg images display as a small crossed circle instead of the actual image when they are not enlarged. I did not do anything specific to trigger this, its just been like that for me since the site went back up.

Huh. Wonder how that happened.
Appleman1234 · 2017-04-14 15:09

It should be fixed for future epub uploads, but I haven't tested it yet.
There was a typographical error in the epub placeholder image lain_epup instead of lain_epub, and 404 means that the code getting the width and height gets nothing.
I have fixed the typo , both on the site and in version control.
Is it worth looking into epub thumbnailing ? PDF thumbnailing was a feature I added recently.

This ain't a bug at all, but when you select a specific post, like >>1187 the active background color is way too similar to the text color, makes it hard to read and it's a bit annoying having to select another post to change the bg.
Nameless · 2017-04-19 01:15
Not a bug, but you should probably update the copyrights at the bottom of the page, given we're four months into 2017.
Ein · 2017-04-19 17:57

You should be able to download files with original file name now, this is done in JavaScript and not server side, so people without JavaScript will not have this feature, if there is demand for server side implementation then it can be implemented that way instead.
EPUB thumbnailing is still on the to do list.
H.R. Giger · 2017-04-20 05:01

another bug related to auto-updating is the post number appended to the tab name does update correctly but does not disappear after you have read to the end of the thread

can we increase the transparency on the birthday balloons? its pretty hard to read under them
Appleman1234 · 2017-04-20 13:12
>>1637
Sure, can you please be more specific ?
Did you just want the the image transparency increased and if so by how much ? or did you want some sort of click on the balloons and they pop thing ?
Did you want the settings for the initial creation of the balloons to be adjusted so there is less of them ?
You can disable the balloons by unchecking
Enable Special Event Effects check box in the Options menu in the top right, as documented on the news page.

Unicode board symbols are missing ing tech.

Appleman1234 · 2017-04-20 15:04
>>1651
This is not a bug, it is a feature called board aliasing.
It was previously configured to use Unicode aliases , but at least 15 lainons said they had issues with seeing the Unicode Emoji, so the aliases where set to regular legacy board names.
This is a configurable feature, inb4 where is board alias citation support (I am adding the patch currently).
Please use separate thread to discuss people's preferred board alias scheme (None, legacy board name aliases, Unicode emoji board name aliases, etc), and maybe eventually this back end feature will be configurable on the client side.

I saw new themes and decided to have a look at them. However when I tried the lainchan.jp theme, I suddenly could not change themes from the catalog.
How can I now change away from this ugly theme?
Appleman1234 · 2017-04-20 23:33
>>1672
Thank you so much,
This was reported earlier in >>1593 but I wasn't able to reproduce it because I was missing the information that this issue was catalog specific, the specific theme CSS has been updated so that the list of themes is visible again once more at the bottom of the catalog page.
In future, this behaviour may be changed so that catalog uses the Options menu for theme selection like other pages, but that will not be implemented without advanced notice.

I think this is a pretty old bug, but if you post to a thread with JS disabled, you will be redirected to a version of that thread that doesn't yet have your post in it. Reloading the page makes your post appear.
I'm using the Tor Browser Bundle, but I believe it also happened back when I used Firefox with NoScript.

That is not true. The posts link to /mega/...#foo, and in my experience have featured post counts significantly higher than board count (see pic related.)
I've encountered this error before, and spoken to Appleman about it. He's aware of the problem, stating that it relates to something he was working on. I didn't press for a description.

It was probably this post from the Lisp general:
https://lainchan.org/%CE%BB/res/3.html#467
When they are both seen on /mega/ the software ignores that they are from different boards and adds the reference to the wrong No.141 post.
It's not a new bug.

Tank · 2017-04-27 19:05
can we increase the line height for paragraphs?
a lot of people give spaces into their text
like
this
because if you don't do it the sentences look to crammed together. Increasing the paragraph line height makes it easier to read. Pic related.

This isn't a bug but it's not worth making a new thread about it.
Please change /mega/ a bit. When I go to the catalog it loads all threads with every OP image. That takes a lot of bandwith.

Change /mega/ how ? , Are you asking for the initial page creation that is currently to have a smaller thread count ? Or are you asking for server pagination like an earlier poster than wants to view overboards without JavaScript ?

Caching has been enabled for all the static file extensions that we currently support as upload file types.
Caching hasn't been enabled yet for CSS and JavaScript, because these can and do change and a suitable expiry policy hasn't been decided yet.

Could you set correct cache-control and/or expire headers for .html and .json files? Without cache control browser caches for some time this files and thread auto-update works with delays (sometimes huge).

Please elaborate, what browser , what resolution, what CSS theme.
The word spacing between elements in the top bar was recently changed in order to attempt to make the top bar take up less space, and the numbers are still being tweaked.

I see what headers was updated. Now they are something like:
cache-control:max-age=900
date:Sat, 15 Jul 2017 08:51:22 GMT
expires:Sat, 15 Jul 2017 09:06:22 GMT
last-modified:Sat, 15 Jul 2017 08:46:05 GMT
With this setup after submitting new post user will be not able to use thread auto-update (or [update] button) for 15 minutes. Files will be always served from browser cache.
For html and json files headers must be something like this:
cache-control: no-cache, must-revalidate
pragma: no-cache
expires: 0
With this setup browser will always revalidate files with server BEFORE using cached version. And server will be able to respond with 304 status if there is no changes (using e-tag and/or last-modified values).

For some reason, the feed is named

Not sure if this is a bug but I think it's very important.
I think there is a problem with the lain canary. (The message at the bottom of the page saying the site didn't receive data disclosure requests)
The idea of the canary is that you don't have to do anything and no one can force you. That's why they have the form:
"Until DD/MM/YYYY we didn't receive any disclosure orders, this message is updated weekly."
If you have to update your canary or totally remove it, I think it can be framed as obstruction of justice, because you are actively telling people things.
You also can't be forced to work in most countries so they can't force you to update the date on the canary. And there is the question of freedom of expression too.
Appleman1234 · 2017-11-26 01:19
>>5103
This is by design. That message below is not a warrant canary, that message below is there for historical and cultural reasons.
Where riseup defines a warrant canary as.
2… A mechanism to test for unsafe conditions, originating from the use of canaries in coal mines to detect poisonous gases or cave-ins. If the canary died, it was time to get out of the mine. More recently, the term has been used by some online service providers to refer to an affirmative statement, updated regularly, that the provider has not been subjected to certain legal processes. If the statement is not updated in a timely fashion, users may infer that the canary statement may no longer be true.
The real canary lives elsewhere and appropriate measures will be taken when it is assassinated or meets its untimely fate.
Regarding the canary, it has forgotten how to sing, if any lainon knows how to teach canarys how to sing, I would be interested in this information.

Not much of a big deal since lainchan is open source anyway, but if you visit a page without the .php extension, you can (usually) download the source.
e.g. https://lainchan.org/derezzed
Before anyone gets excited and tries https://lainchan.org/inc/config to grab db passwords and the like, I have checked and the versions you download are all the originals that are in the lainchan repo, not what's actually running.

Also, why isn't the limit the same for threads/posts (30 and 100)?
Also, why am I no seeing an error message when editing the HTML to remove the length limit and then sending my report with a reason supposedly far too long?

As far as my existing research into this bug, I believe it has to with lynx and links not correctly sending unicode characters in the post fields, but I am not 100% sure.

I mean, i don't know what else to say dude. I posted yesterday in this thread: https://www.lainchan.org/hum/res/13091.html#q13111 and got a spammer warning.
That's alright, tried to post again today, over 12 hours later, i'm still getting a "go away, spammer" warning.
I tried to post entire thing here and apparently it's some black listed keyword.
I'm not sure what it is though since this has never happened before, do we have any list of blacklisted words?

Yes we have a blacklist and if you are getting Go Away Spammer, that is because you are typing words on it, that result in your post being blocked, which is separate to the random flood warnings.
This isn't a bug, it is anti spam feature to stop promotion of a certain toxic environment that generally results in Rule 6 and Rule 4 violations.

Something is still off. The syntex highlight is on, no doubt about it, but in C/C++ code samples I can see:
#include <stdio.h>
instead of:
#include <stdio.h>

I think all signs <, > and & are formatted wrong as I also see it when using pointers (like "foo->x") and references (like "&foo") .

Yes I am aware and actively trying to fix it, it has to do with HTML escaping or double escaping. E.g. vichan 's markup escapes it once, and then highlight.php double escapes it.

The per-board config.php files are not on github, presumably for security reasons. However, posting the $config['markup_code'] setting used for /lambda/ should not pose any security risk, so that we can see whether it is responsible for >>6359. The two sections of the markup function of inc/functions.php that deal with $code_markup only remove leading and trailing empty lines, which is fine.
The Oracle · 2019-07-03 04:44
Right now the lambda index has >>>/λ/14100 marked with fa-lock while the catalog does not. The reply count in the catalog has updated to reflect the lock announcement. The two lock markings are at:
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/templates/post_thread.html#L27
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/templates/themes/catalog/catalog.html#L68
John Rain · 2019-07-06 06:39
Making the lock announcement post rebuilds the index and the catalog, just like any other post. Locking a thread only rebuilds the index:
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/inc/mod/pages.php#L1098
Other buildIndex instances in inc/mod/pages.php are usually followed by the likes of
>// trigger themes
>rebuildThemes('post', $targetBoard);
which will include a catalog rebuild. So what happens is:
make post -> rebuild index & catalog -> lock thread -> rebuild index
which causes the catalog to have an updated post count but no lock marker. The lock marker will show up in the catalog only after the next post triggers a catalog rebuild.
To correct this, since a locking already triggers an index rebuild, a
rebuildThemes('post', $board);
call after the buildIndex in mod_lock will cause the catalog to pick up the lock marker. However, this might be considered too heavy. The stimuli the catalog responds to are at:
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/templates/themes/catalog/theme.php#L16
A targeted catalog update is performed in:
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/inc/controller.php#L92
RebuildTheme lives at:
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/inc/functions.php#L449
Therefore, a lighter option to fix >>6370 is to call
rebuildTheme("catalog", "post", $board);
after the buildIndex in mod_lock. To verify the fix, lock a thread for a bit on a slow board, without posting in it, then go to the catalog right after and check that it picked up the lock marker.
The same issue and solution apply to stickying threads in mod_sticky:
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/inc/mod/pages.php#L1132

locked in index, not locked in catalog
Lord Nikon · 2019-09-18 07:25
After the commit of Aug 25 2019 the lock-relevant part of templates/themes/catalog/theme.php became:
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/templates/themes/catalog/theme.php#L29
>} elseif ($action == 'post-thread' || ($settings['update_on_posts'] && $action == 'post') || ($settings['update_on_posts'] && $action == 'post-delete')
>|| $action == 'sticky' || $action == 'lock' && in_array($board, $boards)) {
This is wrong. The operator precedence table for PooHeaP is at:
https://www.php.net/manual/en/language.operators.precedence.php
The order is
== && ||
so the in_array only applies to the lock test, instead of the entire || chain. The || chain needs to be in parens.
The $boards value is
>$boards = explode(' ', $settings['boards']);
and that comes from:
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/templates/themes/catalog/info.php#L20
This retrieves listBoards() and then manually maps 'uri' extraction over it. This is wasted work because listBoards, which lives at:
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/inc/functions.php#L756
already takes a just_uri parameter for precisely this purpose. The listBoards() call should be made with just_uri set and the manual mapping dumped.
One thing that would cause >>6544 would be in_array not looking for multi-byte strings like λ correctly. Someone with access to a deployed instance should check the return value of the in_array call. Should it be false, the board check would need to be switched to use multi-byte-aware string comparison. If in_array is true, then at least one avenue has been ruled out.
Unspecified · 2019-09-20 13:15
>so the in_array only applies to the lock test, instead of the entire || chain.

- || $action == 'sticky' || $action == 'lock' && in_array($board, $boards)) {

This isn't a glitch. This is the way it was designed in order to both negative and positive monthly funding progress on the same progress bar. Yes I know post people see progress bars with 0% starting on the left and 100% on the right.
We haven't received any non Bitcoin donations, in quite a long time. When we used to receive month from stickers or non bitcoin donations, the donations page would be updated at least monthly, but it hasn't since then.

>This is the way it was designed in order to both negative and positive monthly funding progress on the same progress bar.
I am aware of the reasons for the design of the bar. I read the previous post in this thread that said this. I'm sorry if that was not clear.
The confusion, as >>6565 described, was that the numbers are still the same as in the screencap that was from almost a full month ago, in the previous calendar month.
If there haven't been donations then shouldn't the respective monthly totals show 0? The impression that I got from the numbers that were listed on the donation page was that lainchan.org was well funded by the donations it gets, because the sum of funds from stickers and funds from other donations would be able to pay for several months of lainchan.org operation, based on the listed costs (which is only the server cost).
Appleman1234 · 2019-09-24 01:09
>>6570
I think I saw your other post asking for supposed other costs, of which there are none. If it was updated it would say $0 donations received, but realistically the entire costs are have just been privately funded by me.
There are no unlisted costs. E.g. Lainchan Administration Staff time isn't captured on time sheets and costed at fake billing rates per hour.
Being staff is currently a volunteer position, without mandatory working hours. When asked on such staff member suggested their fake billing rate or actual billing rate if Lainchan was a paid gig, would be $1000 USD per month.
Being a developer for Lainchan or any of its supporting services (LainRadio, Arisu, the IRC server, Lainstore) etc is also a volunteer position and doesn't have costings associated with it.
The real purpose of the donate page was to track donations in the form of sticker sales over time. As soon as the platform for the sticker sales was made defunct, the donate page hasn't received updates.
Based on your post, I can update it to forever say $0 instead of its previous donation value, but it doesn't really serve any utility until Lainstore is facilitating sticker sales / donations again.

What's up with spoilers not nesting?
this first part should be visible when your pointer is over it, while [spoiler]this should be not visible, unless your poiner is also over this[/spoiler]
Instead, you get some of the spoiler tags remaining. In no way could this be an intentional feature, therefore, it must be bug.

what about this post looks automated??
occasionally i come across cool websites and communities, usually as links in message boards, thanks in part to the relevant and easily accessible threads here on lain.
however there are a few that on occasion are as exceptionally appealing as they are hard to find.
due in part to their obscurity, but mostly due to my ineptitude as a search soujourner, i usually lose contact with these sites shortly after having found them. they live on in my memory, and i ocassionally get so worked up about it that i spend 2-3 hour sessions looking for said websites, usually to no avail.
i am writing this post as the conclusion of one such failed attempt. I began two hours ago a search for a list of bbs sites (other than whisper and ein, which don't work for me). I found some really interesting and aesthetic sites, some even with a clearnet portal with a beautiful interface. I can't remember the name, or much about it, other than the it's capitivating colors and ascii inspired artwork. shortly thereafter i erased all my bookmarks on accident. TCHAUU!
another such site, and even more incredible gem for me due to it's potential utility. is the personal website of a legendary web wizard of yore. he was a man known for his god-like abilities to find anything on the internet. on his site were in-depth tutorials of his search techniques. considering my current pursuit this site would be pivotal to future success. I remember very little about the site, except that the opening page has a message from his family. apparently the poor chap died very young, and they keep the site up in his memorial.
anyone know of such things?
does anyone have any pertinent folklore to share?

I'm not sure this is a bug, but: why only a few boards work in clover? Especially why /mega/ doesn't work?
Appleman1234 · 2019-12-04 13:07
>>6708
Because clover doesn't have overboard support yet and /mega/ is an overboard ?

What's going on with the Tor filter? I tried to post and it filtered me, then it suddenly started working again and then it went right back to filtering me. Is it because somebody is spamming with Tor? I tried another Tor node and got a ban message intended for somebody else. When will the filter be lifted?
Mentat · 2020-02-27 17:00
>>7002
If this happens make a ban appeal saying "this is a tor node". I rarely get a derezzed tor node but when I do I usually just report it.

>>7003
I'll do that if I get it again, but that doesn't solve the problem of the filter acting up.

The /mega/ board is not showing some threads by bump order - I can see threads that were bumped months ago that shouldn't be near the top. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Jet Black · 2020-03-07 21:27
>>7066
That's because a spammer is bumping threads and the posts are being deleted.
Nemissa · 2020-03-09 20:30
Can you please make the tree view work? All it does right now is fuarrrk up the page layout
Also, I've tried it on multiple browsers on multiple systems, one of which was a tablet, so I can confirm It's 100% an issue on the site's end, not mine.
Eldon Tyrell · 2020-03-11 07:04
Trying to post a response in the nazi thread on this board since last night, however it's been flagged as spam every time I've attempted it. Tried on tor and not-tor also

Might just be me but when I select "Enable Compact Board List" I can't actually click on any of the boards. The board list shrinks like it should and I see the drop down menus but I can't mouse over to them and select anything.

The site is full of filters, limits, counters, misguided mods and other bullshit that is stopping legitimate, thoughtful discussion from happening while easily lets one-liners, bait, trolling, politics, armchair ideology and supposedly derezzed topics in.
You fuarrrks let appleman stay, and his autism ruined it. Just fork the damn thing, leave the appleshit parts out and move to lain.online already

Please for the love of lain fix the spam and filters on this site, it is almost impossible for me to leave lengthy replies, yet my soykafty little responses make it through no worry. Just take off these filters for post over a certain limit I'm trying to have discussions with multiple people in a thread and it is impossible for me to find what is setting off the filter alert once I've written them.
Tequila · 2020-04-06 13:57

Here we go it is happening again. I write maybe 3 paragrpahs and now I'm a spammer? What is triggering these filters? Is discussion faster than 2 posts a week really too much for the filter to handle? I am fine with aggressive moderation but please just let my posts through otherwise they are just lost

Here's a spooky error: https://www.lainchan.org/lain/src/1589172091823.jpg displays only it's perimeter; reloading picture yold placeholder icon; reloading page yold claim that it ``cannot be displayed because it contains errors.'' The full image is an arithmetic coding JPEG, with SOF9 = FF C9 at offset 0000009E, which can only be deliberate. Lainchan creates thumbnails with ImageMagick
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan/blob/master/inc/config.php#L710
which can handle it and the thumbnail is a baseline JPEG, with SOF0 = FF C0 at offset 0000009E, regardless of lainchan using .png in the name. Everything can read baseline JPEG files but, while there's no technical difficulty in browsers reading arithmetic coding JPEG files, the associated patent trolling used to be through the roof so some browsers may choose not to support them.

I’m getting the “Go away spammer” error when posting on /hum/ right now. Mobile iphone browser, connected to home wifi so not an IP problem, no more than two paragraphs. I post a good bit but it’s always replies and definitely not spam. Not sure if I’m just posting too much or what.

Yet more odd "500 - Internal Server Error" messages when trying to post certain kinds of information, or views on misinformation. Curious how 'selective' this error is. You'd almost think someone didn't want them to be posted. These were attempts to post in the Face Mask thread on Do It Yourself.
