discovering new music
Trinity · 2022-05-18 21:08
what is lainon's official(tm) way of discovering new genres, artists and albums? for me, it's just searching on bandcamp for an obscure genre i found somewhere, like one of those music iceberg videos or on pad chennington's channel. sometimes i also like hoarding the whole discography of some artist that i like and/or is famous.

Going through labels for artists that I enjoy whether through Bandcamp or Discogs is very reliable. The recommended artists list on Last.fm is pretty good as well. I listen to few DJs as well as some internet radio stations, which alone provides more than enough leads that I could want. Genres like chiptune and vaporwave will usually have sites hosting giant repositories for the genre as well.

indie radio programs. late night/early morning sessions done by DJ's who play eclectic, unusual, & underground classics with cussing and suggestive themes. They'll play my favorite types of music and invariably lots that I've overlooked and recent releases I'd probably never discover otherwise.

Mostly going to music venues IRL and talking to people and having some group chats for sharing music

By looking at peoples' last.fm charts, from collabs or remixes my fav artists do, or just hanging out in online music communities.

Ender · 2022-05-27 16:16

i have a tone of music blogspots bookmarked on my browser, each of them focusing on certain genres and scenes throughout history.
i stumble upon these while lurking through rym (http://dieordiy2.blogspot.com/, this being one of my favorites)

Compilations is a good way to find artists similar to the ones you like. I use the last.fm algorithm to some extent too, and sometimes (rarely) bandcamp sorted by publication date

I have found a lot of great stuff by just blindly navigating Discogs. Find the page for an album you like and check out any of the lists, recommendations or label and go from there.
Reddit may be a big soykafhole, but at least it's good for something:

https://libredd.it/r/listentothis
https://libredd.it/r/musicthemetime
Some genre specific subreddits

Same here. It's how I discover most of my music. It would be nice to see a thread dedicated to this.

I used to browse bandcamp's genre tags, then turned to just listening to youtube recommendations. Right now Spotify's algorithm does the job for me.

Rateyourmusic.com is acctualy pretty good at digging for some new music. Especially for some more obscure genres. People creat lists and timelines of genres and artists that often go up to 300 or 500 albums.

I remember seeing on there a profile with a playlist that had every one most popular song of every genre and subgenre in alphabetical order. it was like a challenge to complete to whole playlist and rank every song after listening. the whole thing lasts a couple years. Crazy the amount of lil subgenres there are.

rym is pretty good, usually i browse through the playlist of the top comment user or genre specific top charts. there's so much music to explore. also, i've saved bunch of good charts from the /mu/'s chart threads, so yeah that's how i do it. /mu/ is good for their jazz threads as well

I use qbittorrent and search up "discographgy"
I download the music files with qbittorrent, then I process them with a .bat file to get all files out of folders and then I use winrar to uncompress the .rar and .zip files.

Seconding !rym
You can sort and filter nicely best releases for a genre or subgenre and check out lists that other people made and contain your album/artist of interest
In case od ((( youtube) )), don't you feel that the algorithm has gone to soykaf completely?
Ten years back or so It was all related videos and I was finding something cool all the time. Now it's 90% stuff that I've watched already or normal person front page soykaf that everyone watches

I used to go through music manually maybe 10 years ago but nowadays I just wait until a giant archive of the genres I'm interested in becomes available somewhere. It's not often but I found 0daymusic.org recently and the electronica selection is mindblowing.

Also I discovered Audials the other day, which means now Spotify can be a source as well. It does a phenomenal job ripping.

Usually, I try bands referenced as inspiration by or related in any way to artists I already like. Has a high hit ratio, usually. Discovered the truly strange GOD this way, going from Scorn, Godflesh and Head of David. I also try comparative stuff mentioned in reviews.
Or metal splits, good way to discover underdogs. Recently got into P.H.O.B.O.S. via their split with Blut aus Nord, soykaf is incredible; like being artificially kept alive while a road roller crushes you at a speed of 1 cm per hour. If you like early Swans and Godflesh, try it.

I find new music through posts on various IBs, forums, searching random genres/terms online, also looking up various different music from other countries + (random year) + (music video). I don't really listen to much "newer" music. I've been gravitating back to the 80s and 90s a lot here lately. Been really enjoying Cantopop aka Cantonese Disco Pop here more recently.
