Outsider, or somewhat unusal, music
Haruyoshi · 2022-01-15 11:25
An usually overlooked area of artists are the outsiders. From wikipedia, it is "music created by self-taught or naïve musicians". Usually made outside record companies and studios.
I've recently discovered the magnificent Tonetta and his/her music. One could say he's an outsider. His lyrics are usually very crude, but some are very good conventionally. The main thing is though that the guy has a great sence of making it "catchy", a cursed genius actually. Just listen to G&B Showers, about scat fantasies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6pUm1aG0jY
My favorites from him are:
Drugs Drugs Drugs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liDdir5FBr0 (just listen to that guitar!),
I'll remain as I am https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqCoWgcGDL8
81 inch ass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKpVPdtz0FE
A little at a time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0yZwenmmL8
His still active, living alone on welfare or something. From what I've gathered he went through a nasty breakup with a wife (who also took their(?)) two kids he never talked to again. He might have some mental illness, if not he has surely used some drugs in his days. Also, he makes art from his poop. In one interview he said that he makes all this art (he also draws and sculpture) because he dosen't have sex. Sex is the most basic thing for him, that's what life's all about. According to a ytb comment Drugs Drugs Drugs has an interesting back story: "There’s an interview floating around YouTube with Tonetta where he talks about the creation of this song. Basically, he gave a ride to two female hitchhikers and during the whole drive he was playing looped cassette tapes of his own songs in the car. Once he dropped them off, one of the hitchhikers said something to the effect of “Don’t you know more than the same 3 fuarrrking chords?” And then Tonetta said he went home and wrote Drugs Drugs Drugs."
There are more famous "outsiders" such as Daniel Johnston and the even more schizophrenic Wesley Willis. Also Jandek, but I don't enjoy his music as much. I don't know if this is outsider music, but Sister Irene O'Connor seems to be someone outside of the usual genre, trying her hand at it or at least making something for the younger people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpZeRe4afac. Sun City Girls can be really good too! Some of these might not be outsiders, though they are eclectic and/or far from conventions.
There's also this famous album "Songs in the Key of Z", a compilation of outsider music. Most is very so-so imo, but cool none the less.
Have you ever listened to any outsiders, lainon? Do you have recommendations for other lo-fi artists in the vein of Tonetta (no Ariel Pink or Stevie Moore pls)?

id say Gary Wilson is a bit similar to Tonetta. but honestly no one is quite like him, i've been listening to outsider music for a while now (started with The Shaggs and Captain Beefheart) and Tonetta is still one of my favorites and most unique out of the bunch (to be fair, a lot of outsider artists are pretty unique too).
some of my favorites from Gary Wilson:
Chromium Bitch Invasion of Privacy version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwKV4iz1leU
Cindy Invasion of Privacy version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz35-_tQImw
Debby Debby https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAXHuQgozDg&t=1s
Gary Saw Linda Last Night https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdrenZ1i_vA
I Wanna Lose Control https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGcK6iTITiQ
some say Jerry Paper sounds like Tonetta too but i dont quite agree. i think he is similar to Jandek for the fact that he isnt naive like the others. although their songs have a lot of similarities with the outsider genre, they know exactly what theyre doing (i do not consider Jandek to be an outsider for that matter).

I may be a bit redundant posting Johnston, as he is probably the most well known outsider musician, but he really is one of the best. I found him shortly after finding Tonetta and have been in love ever since.
A lot of it deals with his bipolar, alienation, and unrequited love. Some of his earlier music can be a bit grating to a newcomer, and its very much something you either love or hate. So, for anyone new to Johnston I recommend his album 1990, which is a lot more palatable and hi-fi. If you enjoy that then Hi, How Are You is the next place to go. It was written during a mental breakdown, and you can feel it. If you have been in his headspace, you will know how perfectly it captures it. It is my favourite album of all time.
On his earlier Lo-Fi albums, it is actually the instrumentation that I love the most. He is recording on a cheap boombox and uses instruments such as a kid's Smurfs guitar, a cheap chord organ, and a speak-and-spell. Somehow, it just works. It's really haunting stuff. He was also a very talented pianist which is really showcased on Retired Boxer which consists mostly of piano ballads. There's this weird feedback effect that the keys undergo on his lo-fi equipment which is really beautiful, it all feels so thick and enveloping, like those heavy keys are giving you a great big hug - at least providing you are wearing headphones, otherwise the effect is diminished. It's best showcased on the first track of Retired Boxer https://youtu.be/x0--CjlRzNA.
Here's some of his best songs:
Walking the Cow: https://youtu.be/-qgXYvjVNvk
Story of an Artist: https://youtu.be/FKW2H0WBqW8
True Love Will Find You: https://youtu.be/dLLOdEd8hXk
Casper the Friendly Ghost: https://youtu.be/4VubY10ydY8
Funeral Home: https://youtu.be/fK4Q03v0Eyc
Happy Talk: https://youtu.be/b0BNlmx9Jl0
The last one is a cover he did with Jad Fair. The rest are all original songs written by him.
I wish I could find another artist that hits the same spot as Johnston. I.e., mentally disturbed, lo-fi, extremely talented, child-like innocence. The closest I have found is Tonetta (who I actually found before Johnston), but he is less mentally disturbed - or rather, he is disturbed in a different way and he certainly isn't innocent!. There are plenty of mentally disturbed outsiders, but few that are also as talented as him. Hitting all 4 points seems like a statistical improbability, but I'm still hopeful.

I listened to Tonetta, finally.
I make music like this and in would say i fit in. (Not the same music but the same naïve musician type of thing)
I noticed a lot of similarities.
His songs are distorted a lot, it's very repetitive, among other stuff. The only thing i have to compare it to my music would be a track called Say Hello to the No of Hi (Lyricless) by me
(amornebrolmo.bandcamp.com shameless plug)
Idk but i somehow understand what this guy is all about.
Give 'em all to me!

Can you even call yourself an indie musician if you don't record all of your music on cassette tapes?

this man invented schizoposting. please check him out if you haven't. his name is howard finster. he was a bike mechanic and preacher. one day he was painting a bike and the paint fell on his thumb and formed a perfect human face, which said to him, "make sacred art." i enjoy said "sacred art" very much. i went to his place "paradise garden" and took these pictures. now i am an artists assistant for another fairly well-known outsider visual artist. maybe i should make an outsider/folk art thread on /vis/. anylain interested?

As if Will Toledo's pre-Matador work must be mentioned (though I will anyway, because I'm unsure if that many people have listened to it). The 2011 Twin Fantasy is still one of my favorites in the lo-fi rock genre to this day. I'd highly reccomend Twin Fantasy (2011) and How to Leave Town to anyone who's into self-published lo-fi music and hasn't yet heard it.

That depends on whether you want other people to actually hear it or not.

The album is alright but the book is even better. Really interesting read about the lives and times of musical weirdos, esp. Joe Meek who is a rabbit hole onto himself. Early British experiments into tape-splicing and electronic music deserves its own thread- it wasn't just analog the way a vintage moog is, it was pre-transistor and altogether very weird.
As for more modern "outsider" music, I like The Jaguar/JAGRRR...

https://thejaguarjagrrr.bandcamp.com/album/trashblues-bucket
...and The Space Lady
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1leWu43A44E
both have this indescribable Jandekian quality to them. I also like Yximalloo but it's a different vibe altogether and manic enough to be dance music.

A friend introduced me to Plus-Tech Squeeze Box recently. I'd call them obscure but not really fringe-society outsiders. They have seen some commercial success though having done the opening to Pucca.

Plamo Million Sellers. I don't know how the Needs Work album has not ascended to cult legend status but it's still seemingly very obscure. Very experimental, hyperactive and strange toypop.

The artist has since moved to a new project name Ventla which he has made over 50 albums under. All his albums are free too.

*over 40 albums. I was bad at counting.
Mine as well recommend another. Transient is an electronica artist (idm/triphop/&etc) that enjoys making music mobile using mobile devices. Still pretty obscure but his discography with side projects included dwarfs Ventla.

I would like to bring attention to Ryuichi Sakamoto. When people think of him, they're typically thinking of his modern works (especially Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence), but I would like to draw attention to his octopus-like status in '80s Japanese music.
We can start with this one: Thousand Knives by Sakamoto.
https://yewtu.be/watch?v=dV8wdoQKKvM
Then, I'd like to bring attention to his wife, Akiko Yano, and her "Funamichi Uta Part2" from her /mu/ch memed "Japanese Girl" debut album, but unfortunately, that's inaccessible through invidious mirrors, so I'll post this instead:
https://yewtu.be/watch?v=a84Ai8VW5Ls
Then, I'd like to bring attention to one of the girls he was a producer for: Taeko Ohnuki. Here's a song of hers:
https://yewtu.be/watch?v=fRw_R4Iro08
I've been meaning to explore Sakamoto for some time because he seems mysterious to me. I think I'd find a lot of good stuff if I was willing to dig. Alas, he's reserved to my backlog for now.
