>>6571 I usually start by looking up music I am in the mood for and then sit around on that genre for a day or two, looking up what kinds of musical composition and lyrical style comprises a majority of it. From there I go to slightly related genres and branch out more and more. While doing this I often look up lists of artists or notable songs for that genre which introduces me to new artists and further new genres, since many artists often fall into more than one genre of music.

I also find very helpful to create a Soundcloud account, find some genre related songs, like them and let the algorithm suggets songs for you, which I find to be way better than spotify's.

I ask my friends who have better music taste than me for recs lol. More generally, I talk to people about music, listen to the things people post in music threads, and listen to things that labels I like put out. Rateyourmusic is also a pretty good website for diving down rabbit holes.

>>6572 God jammit should I put this pic in my refrence folder or in my meme folder. I'm too lazy to search for the artists especially if I'm depressed, too busy self deprecating... >>6574 Maybe saying you have a better taste than them would result in getting much more info lol (I know this method has a name but I don't remember it)

>>6571 I'm not a pro in this topic but in my mind, you don't really "expand" your music taste but rather, discover it. There are things out there that you would love to listen to but because you stayed in your little bubble, you never encountered them. I used to use Last.fm for this purpose but now I use Spotify. Spotify has a "Radio" feature you see. Spotify can give you an infinitely long playlist where it just keeps adding more and more songs to the playlist. The songs being added to the playlist are suggested by Spotify's algorithms and will revolve around one of three options at your choosing: A particular song (these are called "Song Radios"), a particular artist (Artist Radio) or a particular playlist that you either found or created (Playlist Radio). I believe my technique is quite simple: Listen to one of Spotify's playlists for a particular genre of music I like Collect the songs I like from that playlist into my own playlist Create a "Playlist Radio" of those songs. Spotify will now create a playlist that has no end, continually suggesting new songs for you to listen to based off of what was originally in the playlist and what other Spotify users who like those songs also listen to, always doing this right as being to come near to the bottom of the playlist. Alternatively, one can explore the albums that a song you liked belongs to and explore the oeuvre of the Artist who put out that song.

What I like to do is go through the majority of sub genres and find my specific tastes.

There is some social benafits to expanded music tastes allows you to connect to more varieties of people on grounds of music. Only drawback is if you stretch it too far you don't get to explore the depths of each genre and have to have things recommended to you all the time. I just pick a genre then look for subgenres I like then take subgenre and explore it till I get a good feel of it then find artists like the ones I wind up liking.
