If Art Deco was music, what would it be like? Ominous yet simple, inspiring yet unassumming. I posit VNV Nation. mp3 related. And, in a way, this stuff too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_m4Qb0iW-o [Petula Clark - Downtown (1964) - YouTube] The lyrics are pretty cyberpunk: >"Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city, >linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty" But it's from the 60's, and has that vinyl old timey feel. I'd love to know if it's part of a specific genre where I can find more music like this and similar artists. Anyway, Art Deco music thread.

>>6430 Mayhaps big band music? >Sounds modern but robust and full of culture (not too "classical") >Combines aspects of musical high-fashion with common and historical motifs, making the ordinary lavish and classy >"Art Deco was associated with both luxury and modernity; it combined very expensive materials and exquisite craftsmanship put into modernistic forms. Nothing was cheap about Art Dec" I like to think of rhapsody in blue by Gershwin, who himself said that >It was on the train, with its steely rhythms, its rattle-ty bang, that is so often so stimulating to a composer — I frequently hear music in the very heart of the noise. ... And there I suddenly heard... the complete construction of the rhapsody, from beginning to end... I worked on the thematic material already in my mind and tried to conceive the composition as a whole. I heard it as a sort of musical kaleidoscope of America, of our vast melting pot, of our unduplicated national pep, of our metropolitan madness. Also >"American skyscrapers marked the summit of the Art Deco style; they became the tallest and most recognizable modern buildings in the world. They were designed to show the prestige of their builders through their height, their shape, their color, and their dramatic illumination at night." The mood also seems captured in Chaka Khan - Diamonds are Forever, which combines powerful vocals with a full band with a theme of luxury (Diamonds) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwDcwJFv8V4 Musically similar to OP, and also about walking around downtown you have Manfred Mann - Doo Wah Diddy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc0x7xOap4I I think that the genre you might be looking for specifically is generally called "golden oldies" I wonder if you could also consider funk jazz or to be the musical equivalent of Art Deco probably to modern, eh?. I guess really it would have to have gilded lyrics (overly happy or lavish) and positively boisterous tone. As with other big band style music, how much do you think "Swing" could be classed as musical Art Deco? If that is the case, Caravan Palace and other electro swing might be more contemporary renditions of the idea as style repeating itself.

>>6430 >If Art Deco was music, what would it be like? i'd say avantgarde pop like coil, especially their late work.
