freak folk

I'm in a folk mood as of late and wanted to share some weird folk with you guys and hopefully get some good recs back. Share the type of folk you get when someone is stuck in a cabin in the deep woods for a few months with a beat up guitar and a backpack full of psychedelics. The styles that come to mind are freak folk, New Weird Americana, anti-folk, and primitive guitar but really any alternative style of folk will do. Here is some of the stuff I have been listening to as of late: Ogre - Richard Dawson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfaW-yD7DoA Hey! Mr Sky - Jackie O MotherFucker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1HyOzO77yw The Shining Path - Sun City Girls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLulItixzUo Nature Makes Us For Ourselves - Bitchin' Bajas & Bonnie Prince Billy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IzSbGfoPXU Kensington Blues - Jack Rose: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jc5j9uXCUSE Life - Jeffrey Lewis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=450OXH2Jf0Q

>>6356 Lie: The Love and Terror Cult - Charles Manson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANI03qFQFvI

>>6364 Yeah, I would say this fits the description of weird folk just given its context, haha. It's weird to listening to his music given all the things he did / convinced others to do and how profound of an impact he had on the American psyche. Musically though, the songs are pretty decent, especially for the late 60s / early 70s.

> Bonnie Prince Billy I listen to this album a lot, it's one of Will's older projects: Palace Brothers, There Is No One What Will Take Care Of You (1993). It might fit OP's description even better than Bonnie does. The lyrics are quite dark, a little chronicle of what can go wrong in an isolated community in the hills cut off from progress or civilization and awash in superstition.

Is Rasputina Freak Folk? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gKqPkHDZOI

maybe Jandek would fit the bill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYlvLTp5WGY

Supreme Dicks are amazing freak folk https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lTgqkbipbgTH4apRgGwnaCzY3D5FyQ79s >>6393 Jandek is cool

>>6391 Oh nice! I have listened to some of Bonnie Prince Billy but never any of his other projects. Somehow the album feels both dark and cozy, in a good way >>6392 I don't know but it's unique enough that I am happy. Fun band anon >>6393 Oh yeah, I love Jandek! I have been definitely been listening to Ready for the House a good bit lately for spooky season >>6394 I have never heard of these guys before! They are really good! They seem to pull from so many different genres and I like the dissonance/noise influences present in some of their songs. It's pretty cool that they were doing this back in the 80s Here's some more weird folk since y'all seem interested: Spirits Abandoned - Six Organs of Admittance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cuJOWFfm8w Track II - Thuja https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEggvZw3Le0 The Flower - Sun City Girls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daQ0caluv_I Up the North Fork - Pelt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pA4rk6BsUfc Kids On Holiday - Animal Collective: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NtMtW2ven4 Sheds Her Skin - Fursaxa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD5OyWCAq1I
