What Podcasts does Lain listen to?
Turner · 2020-08-12 00:18
>>6106 Oh, I haven't seen that app logo in a while. I just pocketcast these days. Anyway I mainly listen to a music related podcast which is called the album years. And is held by Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness. On every episode they chose a year and discuss their favourite records. They usually try to skimp over the really popular stuff (like dark side of the moon, which has just been mentioned in that year's episode) and talk more about the less known stuff. Really great podcast, I reccomend it a lot for any passionate personate music lover. Quite comfy. I also listen to an F1 podcast called Box of Neutrals but I figured most lainanons aren't really into sports so I'm just mentioning it.

Nobody special · 2020-10-23 11:26
>>6472 Any time someone on a podcast shares unnecessary personal information it should set off a red flag. Podcasts shouldn't be intimate conversations they should provide news, or education.
Erik Johansson · 2020-10-23 16:28
I don't because it is a waste of time? Mostly science-news stuff: Quirks and Quarks (CBC) Science Weekly (The Guardian) Inside Science (BBC) Curious Cases of Rutherford & Fry (BBC) Spark (CBC) - Less science and more "society and technology" stuff. Definitely not a blind-adoration-of-the-newest-gadget show though. Lots of episodes about potential tech-based threats against civil liberties by companies and governments.
Nemissa · 2020-10-25 16:11
>>6482 >irc, chan sites, forums, anything Not really. These things involve two way communication. Maybe you think physical presence is important in friendship but that doesn't put them on the same level as podcasts, which are unilateral. I do disagree with that anon's premise that this makes podcasts intrinsically harmful though.

>>6474 Sometimes they are funny. Also sometimes the guests have amazing stories to tell. What you're saying only applies to those podcasts that are some self-appointed celebrity telling you about their breakfast, the other self-appointed celebrities they know, and the parking ticket they just got.
H.R. Giger · 2020-10-25 18:00
>>6472 >>6490 I don't get the "friend simulator" thing - hanging out with friends doesn't usually involve a multi-hour discussion about some niche or academic topic. They're more like lecture simulators.
The Phantom Phreak · 2020-10-25 18:55
>>6493 Lecture, or documentary in some cases. People who drive for a living listen to podcasts. I listen to them when I'm cooking or cleaning the house. I don't know why but this is more enjoyable than listening to music at those particular times. I don't get the implied argument by some that audio is less valuable than written information. The creator is what matters. A lot of podcasts are unsourced tripe but so is a large percentage of what you might read online.

>>6502 When I was young, a major part of my socialization was to listen to a local FM radio, call to ask for a song and all that jazz. It was quite popular in my country and most places had a local station that did so. Podcasts bring that back, although the asynchronicity of it makes it a bit less enjoyable to me. I currently host a podcast, I won't share it cause it's not in english, and the experience is nice. However I'm on the way of bootstrapping a web radio that relives this older era, where I met some of the most amazing people through the airwaves.
Faye Valentine · 2020-10-27 18:10
>>6493 It depends on the podcast. Not all of them are educational lectures, there are some really popular ones that really are just the hosts casually chatting about video games and anime or whatever.
Y.T · 2020-10-27 18:17
>>6482 Yeah... and we should be leaning away from all that too. The podcast hole is just increasing the level of simulacra. Involves hearing voices, believing there's a dialogue when there is none, having more intense and long-lasting parasocial relationships. Don't listen to podcasts. Don't be a podcast guy. It's just more brain rot, screen damage except through your headphones. Maybe audiobooks would be a better alternative imo.
Apoc · 2020-10-27 18:22
>>6493 Yeah, it's a friend simulator for people who want to reframe their loneliness as erudition and who don't really remember what friendship is like. People who have been driven nuts by obsessions that drove off their old friends in the first place (or prevented those bonds from ever forming) so they look for something that's like being in a room with people chatting but also they're as demented as me Podcasts are friend simulators. I know it doesn't make good sense, but that's how people use it and in the end that's what does it, not the details. If people don't notice the way that the internet and its depressing new rituals and niches is slowly privatizing and replacing social reality, congratulations you can legitimately consider yourselves mentally disabled from now on. This is all a big rat trap and you're telling yourself the cheese isn't really that bad, it's good cheese actually. Who would be suspicious of cheese? That's silly
Meddler · 2020-10-27 18:35
>>6514 What a sad worldview. Your 18 century views of friendships and society are deprecated, we have evolved past that, catch up with the times. Begin by improving your erudition by reading wikipedia and listening to podcasts, it's not that hard, but you'll have to give up your fear of becoming a nerd or something.
Netrunner · 2020-10-27 18:37
>>6513 >>6514 I've come across podcasts that could work that way, but it's simply a bizarre generalization to make for a medium that includes pretty much any form of episodic talking that gets put on the internet.
Switch · 2020-10-27 18:39
>>6514 I love telling my friends to talk exactly 1.25 times faster forever. And have them talk about history or some other obscure and nerdy theme whenever i want them, wherever i want them. Yeah that's exactly what friendship is about and it's the a pretty good simulation for it.
Trinity · 2020-10-27 18:47
>>6513 >Maybe audiobooks would be a better alternative imo. The podcasts I listen to are all either literally short story audiobooks (like the Nightmare Magazine podcast, for example), or TTRPG actual-play podcasts, which are essentially improvised freeform audiobooks (or at least, that's why I personally enjoy them).
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2020-10-27 19:14
>>6515 lol no, my worldview and my social life are anything but sad. I have normal human bonds. They didn't evaporate centuries ago, they aren't obsolete or depreciated. You're just overly credulous and you've bought into the sales pitch for this massively impoverished replacement they're trying to foist on everybody. You're carrying water for those that would mistreat you, have more self-respect than this. Don't confuse my pessimism about your ways for pessimism of my own, I'm just fine thanks. But yeah have fun improving your erudition (or the delusion of it). I'm not so much afraid of becoming a nerd as I am disappointed in seeing a lot of people around me turning into worms. >>6516 Any comment approaching an entire broad medium is necessarily going to be a generalization. Of course there are exceptions >>6517 Like I said, you're focusing on the details. I've seen the way podcast heads interface with the medium. I've seen the comments below some of these twitch streams with pod personalities before. It's a parasocial interaction, doesn't really matter what it's about. Maybe that's not what you personally get out of it and if not then congratulations, but most of them seem to be full of poison to me. >>6518 That might be one of those exceptions. I mean the medium is still just arbitrary audio recordings/radio shows that for some reason are still named after the ipod. It's a bogus definition for a genre, but I'm talking about most consumers of podcasts and their emotional relationship to them, not specific people or the content of the things themselves.
Meddler · 2020-10-27 19:28
>>6474 >Who likes to waste their time doing that. You seem to be under the impression that people like to spend time just listening to podcasts while staring at a wall or something, but in reality most people listen to them while doing things like driving, jogging, cooking, cleaning, folding laundry, etc. Time which couldn't really be spent reading or watching a movie.

>>6520 >but in reality most people listen to them while doing things like driving, jogging, cooking, cleaning, folding laundry I knew there was one of these idiots who think that multitasking is a thing, lol Hey bud, don't want to burst your bubble, but 80% of people can't hold on a focus on one thing kr train of thought for longer than 10 minutes and you want them to do it for a couple of hours? And if you aren't honestly dedicating your brain to one activity in its entirety but instead suplementing it with another can you honestly say you enjoyed that activity? That you're not just filling up things to do one after another to escape the feeling of dread when you are left alone to your own thoughts? Hell, that is primary reason why people bitch of low reading rates. Not the books but close deliberation and thinking of information being processed and not just guzzling it down like popcorn so you can rehash the story to your friends and gain some kind of social reputation points that way. You are just making drones that way that half heartedly listen to the story and internalize a deeper message subconciously. Just like TV does, people kinda just "zone out" after a while and stop processing the info. >>6489 Stop trying to relativize things by comparing them so condescendingly. That is what nihilists do, "you don't want to be one of those now do you?" (Imagine a condescending down talking questioneering high pitched voice and that is how I am doing it to mock you). And also you're in no position to ask such a question. But you are right about one thing, this reply was a waste of time because you will not learn a lot and jist continue to drift through life. >>6490 I agree. I mean that is why they're always rehashing same topics and ideas that have mainstream adoption. Don't want to lose 3 million dumb lonely losers that will make you hundreds of thousands of dollars by mentioning a shawing razor now do you? But those neckbeards will still be unkempt lol. >>6492 The whole time I was making that comment I was thinking about Joe Rogans podcast and dumb notoriety it accrued. He is the half baked celebrity. He talks about same topics over and over. He rehashes same ideas into the mainstream without adding anything of value. >sometimes You know that is a weasel word and you are just not too brave enough to convince yourself of the truth you already know to be true. Weasels are pitiful in that way. They weasel around the point.
Sabo Engle · 2020-10-28 03:05

You aren't the refferee of discussion here, what makes you think anybody will listen to you? You didn't even get a single "yea, you're right boss" before I replied. Get out of your own smelly pompous ass and either add to convo or don't.
