Anyone else run a tape label?
Tank · 2020-07-07 23:30
So since at least 2017 I've taken an interest in making bulk copies of tapes and then selling them of bandcamp. Its become a very fun hobby, not gonna lie. Here's the process and specifications I've gone through with people on the label:
-Tapes are usually old audiobook stock I get from thrift stores/ebay
-in order to not pay for jewel cases I use o-cards
-design uses black and white color scheme so I not only spend less on ink but also so that when the releases are placed together they look nice and flush
So what are your guys methods, what do you do? Are you interested yet never parttook?

I tried to do this when I younger but I never got anyone who wanted to trade tapes so I just ended up with piles of supplies and nothing to do with them. I would just leave them in random places around my hometown I guess which was funny. I still just have mountains of recordings and neat off-colored cassettes I bought that nobody ever wanted.

I do tapes. I put them in the streets. I put some challenging, obscure, underground, feels music, speeches and noises on it.
You could found lots of old tapes for free, DIY artwork and a tape recorder and it's alright.

You got a site or something for all that? Ngl that sounds really cool

Just buy/found free old tapes. Even "non recordable" you just have to put a little piece of paper in the hole of the tape to make it recordable.
Put whatever you want on it. Use Audacity foe basic mixing and noising.
Take a piece of paper, wrote some things on it, draw whatever you want on it. You've got an artwork.
Let them in the streets, in the trains...
Let people find it (people could be afraid of putting unknown USB key in a computer, tapes don't afraid people), hope they got a tape reading music device (lots of people don't use it today).
?
Profit
No internet site, no social media. Just put tapes randomly in the streets. Sometimes for the lulz with very creepy noises and cryptic imagery. (I love to imagine people going mad thinking it could be tied to something disturbing like murder or serial killa or cult org.)
Have fun Lainons.

that really sounds like a super cool thing to do, but I'm afraid some tapes would end up being thrown away before anyone even listened to them
Where can I put them to be sure someone will pick it up and actually listen to it?
Reading your post made me think to do like a series of tapes like that, with like 3 editions per tape, and put them in the streets + on discogs to see if people actually collect them. Maybe it could become something rare or famous in underground music circles
Also it's probably a good way to advertize music genres that are not popular enough in my city, so probably jungle/breakcore or skramz

It's all part of the game my Lainon. Tapes are almost free today.

You could try finding some of those "little free libraries" and putting them in there. That way at least people will know that the tapes are meant to be taken and listened to, rather than just dropped off at a lost and found booth or something.
I don't know how much of a thing geocaching is nowadays (I haven't heard anyone talk about it in a very long time), but leaving them in geocaches could also be an option if you can find any.
You could also try donating them to thrift stores or record stores that sell used tapes, although you'd probably have to be pretty good at making them seem "legitimate" for record stores to accept them, and thrift stores would give more of a "found" feeling to them anyway.
That's just a few ideas.

And they are good, especially geocaches and free street libs.
