Lainon, where do you get your music from? Is it Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal or any of the other hundreds of ways you can listen to audio? Do you listen to it offline or do you stream it? Where do you get your offline music from? Share audio resources with other lainons and discuss why you like method x over service y!

I buy CD's, rip them, and put them on my plex server. Sometime's I will buy them from bandcamp, if the artists have a store there. Sometimes I will browse Soundcloud for some DnB DJ's that make their mixes available. I also have a subscription to di.fm.

I used to get my music from slsk, but syncing my library with other devices was getting pretty annoying as I didn't know how to properly do it with as little effort as possible. It always turned out to be a pain. Also, I got scared that law enforcement might find out who I am, since I really do not trust VPNs. I've completely gone back to Spotify, since syncing your library is nothing you do yourself. You can stream your library from your home connection without any setup, and delete and download anything you want really easily. It's just comfy. I would like to go back to getting a semi-complete flac collection though. A lot of stuff I'm looking for I can't even find on slsk, and I don't think I'll ever be ready to torrent because I'm so paranoid about it. Ideally, I'd like to have a server at home, being able to stream all my music I downloaded off of slsk (or maybe even some tracker, who knows) and even download it onto my phone, as is the case with Spotify (and I assume other streaming services as well). Sadly, a home server is currently not doable for me.
Netrunner · 2020-06-12 19:17
>>5721 Anything can be a "server." The requirements to make an audio streaming service is close to nothing (you can run it off a raspberry pi if you wanted to). The biggest requirement is storage for all your music, which is still nothing compared to the sizes of hard drives available today.

>>5719 I've become a tremendously lazy degenerate who stopped pretending to care about audio quality last few years. I just download audio from youtube using 'youtube dl'. It takes 2 seconds, just copy and paste url to command line and done.

>Lainon, where do you get your music from? Soulseek, though I prefer torrents. I just don't have access to a good music tracker rn. I also occasionally buy albums on bandcamp or similar if I can't find it elsewhere. I don't use subscription streaming services or storefronts with DRM at all. >Do you listen to it offline or do you stream it? I host it on my home fileserver and either stream it with this hacky script i wrote (the "client" is literally netcat piped into aplay) or mount my music drive over the network. I'm using MPD and am quite happy with it (the satellite config works great for the couple raspberry pis I have hooked up to hifi systems around my house). The one thing I haven't totally figured out is how to seamlessly access my music on my phone. Currently I'm using this (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.gateshipone.malp/) MPD client app over a wireguard VPN. It has a very nice interface that IMO is just as good as spotify or google play or whatever. I am using the built in http stream feature to actually play the audio but it's somewhat laggy because http isn't great for these things. It isn't ideal but since I have an unlimited data plan it's good enough for putting an album on in the car. I'm looking into alternatives, either using webrtc for a more reliable stream or just mounting the NFS shares on my phone somehow. >>5721 >but syncing my library with other devices was getting pretty annoying as I didn't know how to properly do it with as little effort as possible Set up a home server. Your life will be so much easier if you have at least one box on your network that you can consistently count on always being running. Like >>5722 said this can be a raspberry pi, but a cheap mini-itx build can be had for a couple hundred dollars if you want more flexibility when it comes to SATA disks (not to mention a bit more power and x86 architecture). Once you do that you can either take the approach of actually storing copies of your libraries on every device using something like syncthing, rclone, etc. or you can just do what I described above and run NFS/SMB shares and/or some kind of streaming system. "Pinning" files from a network share to your local disk may be something you want to implement, and I'm sure it can be done, I just don't know the best way to do it. >I got scared that law enforcement might find out who I am, since I really do not trust VPNs. Distrust for VPN providers is good but you have to understand that facilitating piracy is fundamentally central to their business model. If they started narcing on people they wouldn't have any customers. If you're worried about price well... what are you paying for spotify? I'm sure a VPN is cheaper and lets you pirate video and software too. Sure don't use them in place of proper anonymizing proxies for seriously illegal stuff, but the days of the copyright mafia dragging teenagers into court for torrenting is long past. The worst that'll happen is you'll get a nastygram from your ISP (if you forget to use a VPN) and if you keep it up they may eventually terminate your service. However, I have been using soulseek without a VPN for years (and before that I used to regularly use what.cd without a VPN) and I have never heard a single complaint from my ISP. The only time they've ever come after me was for direct-downloading nintendo ROMs, and even then it was just a "don't do it again" email. A torrent-based setup can be super convenient and safe if you spend the time to get it all running properly. I have rtorrent partitioned in a network namespace that can't see anything except for the virtual tun interface created by my VPN client. If the VPN drops that namespace has no internet access, so no risk of leaks. I use the flood web ui to control rtorrent through an RPC socket, so I can add torrents remotely and then have them become available on my network shares once they have been downloaded. Soulseek is a bigger pain in the ass because there's (afaik) no headless client. I basically resort to just downloading music on my laptop and then copying it to the shared directory on the server, although I'm sure there's a better way.

>>5722 >Anything can be a "server." Oh I am aware. Maybe I should mention that I am by no means new to the field of computer science. I do study CS at uni and I do keep myself busy with CS related topics in my freetime. I do have a raspberry pi, but I don't like the thought of connecting an external HDD to it. I'm not an expert on HDDs, but running an external one 24/7 to me seems too like much stress on it. If that's not the case then sure, I'll probaby try that. >>5723 >I just download audio from youtube using 'youtube dl'. What I especially hate about that is that tagging music automatically is hard, since last time I checked youtube-dl didn't find any "%(artist)s" tags or anything else on music from youtube. I really like having all my music properly formatted, so youtube-dl is actually a pain in the ass for me for music downloading. >>5724 >I just don't have access to a good music tracker rn. I don't either, though I've thought about getting into RED quite a few times. The thing that makes me feel uneasy about private trackers is that a lot of them seem to require you to connect to their website from your home connection, and they definitely require you to download and seed using that, too, to minimize you sharing your account with others. I just don't trust them, like I don't trust VPNs anymore. >I also occasionally buy albums on bandcamp or similar if I can't find it elsewhere. I do, too. Thinking about how much Spotify pays an artist from my monthly subscription makes me sick, so I try to support artists in other ways, like buying merch and CDs, or going to shows. >Currently I'm using this MPD client app over a wireguard VPN I have looked into this option, and I got it to work quite easily, but I was too lazy to set it up on my pi. I might try it again, though. >Set up a home server I'm looking into that. I could snag myself a free (but very old) pc and HDDs from an office that gave them away, so I'll try that if possible. It really isn't anything special but it'd definitely work for that use case. It'd also be nice to finally have a homeserver, as not having one has brought me quite some trouble in a lot of cases. >you have to understand that facilitating piracy is fundamentally central to their business model I am very aware of this, but I'm still scared. It's kind of a groundless fear. >the days of the copyright mafia dragging teenagers into court for torrenting is long past That's probably true for most countries. Here it's a different story. Nothing changed from those days, which is why I am always thinking twice about whether I want to download that album or not. >if you keep it up they may eventually terminate your service Again, different story here. ISPs don't care about you and forward you any letter they get from lawyers. These letters are also not the usual "stop or pay" but they're actually serious letters, so you can get in trouble very easily. >>5727 >256GB SD card for my phone I wish my phone would accept SD cards. Does it just need to not be a subscription VPN? Actually, come to think of it that might be an option for you if you can afford it. Just find a host that will ignore your torrenting and use it to host your own VPN or seedbox. I think most people use OVH/kimsufi for this purpose since you can get a lot of disk on a dedicated host for relatively cheap.

You can read up about it here: https://interviewfor.red/en/index.html It's really nice since I don't know anyone that is on a private tracker and who could give me an invite. >How do people run seedboxes? Does it just need to not be a subscription VPN? I'm not very familiar with what I said about VPNs and home connections on private trackers, but what I picked up is that the admins of the tracker don't like seeing a lot of different IPs using one account, as it implies that multiple people are using it. Using a seedbox is fine if you tell them (so I've heard, some don't like you using a seedbox without telling them). Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. >Just find a host that will ignore your torrenting and use it to host your own VPN or seedbox I thought about this a couple of times but it never really went anywhere. I need a seedbox that I can "trust", has good reviews, is not very expensive and ideally near my location so transfer rates aren't bad. >>5743 >I wasn't around when what.cd was still going. What.cd was quite simply the best, most complete music tracker to ever exist (afaik... maybe there were better non-english language ones I don't know about). The problem with the newer ones like RED is like >>5740 said, the ratio economy doesn't work as well as it did with what.cd, largely because people joining them were coming directly from what after it died. So you get a lot of people seeding a lot of stuff immediately and not really downloading everything. On top of that, it's a lot harder to upload stuff that's not already on the tracker, particularly popular stuff, because the back catalog has already been filled out from people just re-purposing their old what.cd torrents. End result is you have to be seeding a ton to even have enough ratio to download a single album. I'm assuming you know what I mean when I say "ratio economy" but if you aren't familiar with how private trackers work just ask and I'll explain. >>5740 >Orpheus How do they compare to RED? But thanks! How is it that what.cd died? Did they just stop running the tracker or was it something else? Would you still recommend RED if I can find most of what I'm looking for on slsk? What bothers me about slsk a lot is people having trade-only packs, and most of those are semi-obscure music, making them the only one to offer it. I'm not about to look through their insanely long list of music on their wishlist to see if I have some if that, if I even want to fuel this practice I don't condone.

But torrents don't usually have the stuff that I want then I had a brief time with spotify until paranoia got the best of me which was coincidentally around the time I found deezloader. So now I mostly just download out of deezloader and sometimes bandcamp for some indie stuff. I listen to it offline but I have been dabbling on having an on-demand audio service akin to spotify but at the moment I can't be bothered to do it so I just sshfs mount it the server to my local machines at home and copy soykaf whenever I want to listen to music outside.

>>5743 What had /everything/, no matter how old or obscure - and if they didn't, the community was great at finding it. what was the keystone to private trackers IMO, the creme de la creme. what's successors have a lot, but many of the made-for-what rips spanning 10 years have been lost, rather instead RED uploaders are vomiting free bandcamp releases and lossless deezer rips via scripts on racer boxes to gain massive upload from the autosnatch seedboxers, who also gain massive upload at the expensive of regular uploaders and seeders. RED needs bonus points or freeleech tokens to be a tracker for people who like downloading music and uploading music for perks rather than a 10gbe seedbox grind site. Orpheus is much better in that regard and easier to maintain ratio on, but once in a while I have to download a missing album from RED and cross seed back to Orpheus. RED's main advantage is its very comprehensive invite forum to other trackers (exc. a few that require very high userclasses, which is why most people grind with 50EUR seedboxes), which Orpheus has fewer of.because it was at one point open signup and filled with people good trackers don't want. Orpheus recruit from some lower tier trackers like MAM iirc but getting into RED and uploading 5 albums to access its invite forums is a better use of time.

>>5719 I'll leave this here in case anyone find it useful. It's the process I use to build my own digital archive/collection. It's a thing I dedicated lot of time to and it quickly became my main activity so I hope at least someone could get a use out of of this. Here we go. During this lockdown I've started reorganising my library because I always kept repeating to myself that I had to do it because I had different records downloaded on different devices and also because the main micro SD card where I usually keep my music just fuarrrked up for some unknown reason. So I started. I tried to research which releases of a certain record were more desirable (SHM-CD remaster, SACD, Japanese remasters in general) and then searched for them on Rutracker.org. For the most part I found everything I wanted but I'm trying to buy off discogs the releases that aren't available on the Web, neither on Rutracker or Soulseek. Then I figured I would make a txt file in order to remember particular information of a specific album because otherwise I would've forgot in a week what the heck I downloaded. The file is structured this way: >Artist: >Album: >Format: >Edition: >Label: Then I started to hunt for high quality cover art. I mostly use three websites: last.fm, albumartexchange and fanart.tv, I can't say I'm not satisfied with what I find. Then for least, I just save the loseless audio checker log into the album folder to make sure every FLAC is legit and has not been upsampled. This is basically how I manage my music library. I wanted to share my stuff on mega so other listeners could enjoy it as well without having to do all the work I did. If anyone is interested let me know, I mostly have Krautrock, Canterbury, Prog and Jazz stuff.

Expecially the dumb rules like you have to seed absolutely everything for a long period of time otherwise they'll ban you right away. And even the interviews entry barrier is just nonsensical. My concept of the availability of the information is that it should be free to view and everyone should be able to access it, not just the few selected users who are lucky to have received an invite. I don't see how limiting the access is doing any good to the art at all.

>>6156 There's pros and cons. It's easier to understand the benefits if you've had an account. What had basically every album I'd ever want in multiple formats ripped by people who actually know what they're doing and meticulously tagged. Nearly every torrent has dozens of seeders and downloads in seconds. Not to mention you don't get nastygrams from your ISP for torrenting without a VPN since private trackers usually aren't crawled by PRO bots. Could this happen on a public tracker? Idk maybe. Have I ever encountered a public tracker like that? No, not yet. On the other hand, I don't have a red account but from what I've heard the balance has tipped more towards the cons since they basically just carbon-copied whatcd's rules without considering the fact that their situation is different from whatcd (smaller userbase who have a ton of music to upload since they're mostly coming from whatcd).

Going around old blogspot pages and just searching for the .rar archives is generally how I do it. Other way I've done it is just rip CDs like any other old user. I came across a file converter and I try to upscale the files to 24 bit Flac or get it in DSD format. It's pretty nice on a good audio player
Yu-ichi · 2020-12-13 11:58
>>6939 Surely, if you upscale an originally low-quality file to a high-quality file, the quality doesn't change?

>>5721 >don't think I'll ever be ready to torrent because I'm so paranoid about it. >uses Soulseek Do you realise soulseek is p2p too? also, with soulseek you have to register an account.
Spicy · 2020-12-13 17:28
>>6948 It depends how the original file was recorded/ripped. If it was ripped from a CD as a mp3, an mp3 is a compressed .WAV file. So it would basically decompress the mp3. It basically recompresses/repacks the audio codec. MP3s are like zip files in a way, they get compressed to smaller file sizes.
Trinity · 2020-12-13 17:44
>>6950 MP3 is lossy compression. You cannot regain the information that was lost by re-encoding it. When you encode it as FLAC you're just taking the exact waveform that the MP3 would produce if decompressed and then compressing it with lossless (therefore, less compact) compression.

fuarrrk people who hate on lossless formats. Inevitably you find out they're suckers for "muh analog sound" which is just as bad. I have a script for making transcodes with normal looking spectrograms of all my rips just to spite those people. It sounds like soykaf, but they'll eat it up if the spectrogram looks good because it's all snake oil. If anyone calls me on it I say "oh the media is degraded and it's a rare release." Worked for me so far.
Emmanuel · 2020-12-14 18:50

Almost all of my music comes from various threads on halfchan. If not from there, then friends I made from a few /vg/ generals. Other than that, occasionally I will find out an artist I like has done a DJ mix of music they like and I've found some really good stuff that way (like this https://youtu.be/4KGsgpFiswQ ). I save it on whatever site I find it on, then either buy it or yarhar it depending on how available it is (if it's only available to stream, I am downloading it because I don't trust any streaming site to not delete the music I like). One trick I have found is that if there's no bandcamp page for the artist, a good 30% or so of the time, the artist has a website which you can buy stuff directly from. Weirdly those pages are usually buried though, checking the socials of the band and/or their label yields results more often than oyveygle.
SHODAN · 2021-04-03 05:20
>>7507 These days, it's mostly youtube rips or youtuber musician promoting himself via bandcamp. I haven't been to a dedicated music download/torrent site for a long time.

I usually do the following: >search rbt.asia (a 4chan/mu/ archive) for [album name] + mega >download high quality files with torify megadl simple, effective and secure. But now rbt.asia is down and I have to look for an alternative. Is soulseek secure? I wish everyone would just be using i2p torrents.
alexandra · 2021-04-12 19:56
I find music usually through friends' recommendations but also those articles bandcamp puts out. I advocate strongly for bandcamp. higher quality and they don't exploit the soykaf out of artists

Soulseek, various torrent trackers, all that. For listening i just use foobar both on my phone and on computer. i used to download in the highest quality but now i download at an acceptable quality bc of storage.
Hagbard Celine · 2021-05-10 01:32
I download all of my albums from slsk. I use foobar2000 as my music player. If there's a single song I'm interested in listening to I'll look for it on YouTube. For a long time I was using RateYourMusic to discover albums I was interested in, but this year I stopped using the site as it became more social media-esque. I also realized that using RYM made discovering new music into a compulsion that stemmed from rating averages, rating scales, updating various lists, submitting artists to the database, etc; rather than a genuine experience stemming from my love of music. Nowadays I'm listening to less albums than before but generally use Discogs as a reference for bands I already knew about via RYM.
