Obscure music
Dr. X · 2020-01-31 20:25
It's saddening to know that there's so much great music that won't ever get any recognition at all. So let's shine new light on forgotten or otherwise obscure music and artists.
Recently found this blog which I find to be a good starting point: https://obscuremusicdaily.wordpress.com (Sadly abandoned.)

Not sure how obscure this is
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQKlrmwFP2flRdjBPoiq8PA/videos
It hurt me bad when MU fell and all those random blogs with discographies of all types died with it.

this is maybe not so obscure to europeans, but to americans it sure is.
take a look at some ex-yugo rock bands such as bijelo dugme, novi fossil, bombaj stampa and some of the older dino merlin and hari mata hari songs to get you started (even though the new songs are just as great). there actually was a thread on lainchan dedicated to this genre, but it seems to have died before i had chance to bump it..

Discogs is a pretty great source for discovering obscure music. I think it's probably the most cohesive music database around, but idk.
Just choose a music style you want and you'll probably find plenty of interesting stuff.

The Art of Fighting, indie band. never really took off
Bob Arctor · 2020-02-05 07:39
So you found a bunch of little-known stuff, but is it any good? Why should someone care? Yes, there's the novelty, and the occasional original discovery, but I can easily get novelty by digging through whatever archives, and I won't be discovering originally if I read about it here. Nonetheless, original discoveries are to be posted, the point in discovery being sharing---if it's about getting some great new, I'd stick to the massive list of known greats---they're new to me, which suffices. So then, the question stands: What's so special about this that you post? Don't just point to something, assuming people are going to waste their effort inspecting whatever it is, probably to little avail. And a description like ``it's good, it's ukranian'' does not say much. What's good about it. If the fact that it's ukranian---usually extraneous trivia---is significant, tell us why it's significant, what about the actual music exemplifies ukranianity, and how those qualities affect the experience of listening to that music.
And then, even more ridiculous, is
>The Art of Fighting, indie band. never really took off
You, in the most direct sense, just gave a very compelling reason to absolutely ignore that artist. What could possibly go through the mind of someone who reads that line? Here's what I suspect:
``These guys never really took off. Why? Probably their music sucked, because if it were any good, they'd still have a decent following---unless the world suddenly went to soykaf and people don't care about good culture---or everything else is so much better that, relatively, it's 95% purity horse manure.
Yamaoto Toshi · 2020-02-05 17:27

>is it any good
The people who are sharing it probably think so.
>Why should someone care
Some people like listening new and less heard things for the fun of it. Websites like rateyourmusic exist for this reason.
>I can easily get novelty by digging through whatever archives, I won't be discovering it organically if I read about it here
I don't understand this sentiment at all. There aren't accessible archives for everything, not everything is in a language you would understand, and "organic discovery" is pretty meaningless and pointlessly prideful. I would have missed out on a lot if people in random slsk chats hadn't gotten people interested with random talk about a new favorite they found.
>What's so special about this that you post? Don't just point to something, assuming people are going to waste their effort inspecting whatever it is, probably to little avail
People are even more likely to ignore you if you give them a wall of text for everything, especially if it's an imageboard. And like you mentioned, some people like going into things with little idea of what to expect.
>If the fact that it's ukranian---usually extraneous trivia
Something being outside the Anglosphere is a good explanation for why you would be posting it in an obscure music thread.
>Why? Probably their music sucked
I agree that "never really took off" is not the most inspiring word choice.

I mainly listen to covers of video game music, mostly stuff you can probably still find on OCremix or http://dwellingofduels.net/ At first because of autism, nowadays it's because it was all royalty free.
I do have a few things that I've gotten from other sites over the last <20yrs that have been lost to the void too, but I haven't looked at anything new in a good while. Probably have missed an entire site or two, oh well...

Freeform hardcore as a genre. It started off in the early 2000s together with a plethora of other electronic hard dance genres. It's basically a harder version of trance, often very melancholic and atmospheric.

In a similar vein, I find myself listening to a lot of OSTs from games on old Japanese computers (MSX, PC98, X68000, etc.), mostly stuff from Falcom. The Hoot player is really good for this kind of thing, works like a charm in Wine too.
And not only do I enjoy listening to the music on its own, but since I've been trying to make my own game music lately, I've found that it's a good source of inspiration. And it seems like I'm not alone in this. A lot of indie/chiptune composers sound like they listen to the same kind of music I do for the same reason.

Why do you expect every act to be sold to you and marketed by every lainanon on lengthy paragraphs? If you wanna listen to your rockers soykaf then go do that, just remember that everything you listen to is a bleak consumerist product now and has been stripped away from any meaning it might've once had.

This album has a very small cult following but it's still plenty obscure. Not much is known about the artists other than they are from the UK. The most amount of "mainstream" coverage this album got was thanks to adult swim. One of the songs is pretty famous among adult swim fans because it was used in their "all times eastern" bump, the song in question being "Mandeer". However, the other songs in this album are mostly unknown, which is a real shame, cause I honestly, unironically consider this to be one of my favorite electronic music albums of all time! It is very good! Anyways, here's the album:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syrlwtTXbx4
The reason why this album is so hard to find is because this album is what's known as "library music". It's music made by record companies that is made specifically to license to TV stations, movie studios, ect. In other words, music that is impossible for common people to obtain. Library music tends to be awesome! A lot of library music is made by artists using a sudonem, and a lot of it is very avant garde. It's kinda sad to think about all the great music we're missing out on because it'll never be released to the public.

I'm not going to listen to anything if you just provide a link and no description. Why should I? The entire internet is full of threads like this with people's suggestions. There isn't time in this life to listen to even a tiny fraction of them all so give me a reason or I'll scroll on by and look for something else. But, isn't there an abundance of music on YouTube? Does YouTube's "Mix" Playlist feature regularly expose one to obscure music? Even if it's accessible on YouTube, if nobody knows about it, the algorithm won't promote it and so it's basically a private video with nothing really linking you to it.

To me it cheapens it to be on a site like YouTube. It is just sad, like a desperate whore, past her prime, essentially begging for a few dollars. Bands that were too cool to YouTube have a bit of dignity about them. I *really* don't like YouTube, because they are *the* pirate site that killed any hope for musicians.

The point is obscure musicians didn't upload to youtube. They had their own websites and distributed directly, like the one I shared with you. Those sites are gone now, and the links to the music with it. I don't expect you to understand it. I doubt you ever visited a band site. The point is if you only ever visit youtube, you will miss the really obscure music that was never on youtube.

>It is just sad, like a desperate whore, past her prime, essentially begging for a few dollars.
To me, that sounds like a cope. Like, the musicians knew they'd never be mainstream so by refraining from putting their music on YouTube, they can successfully save face by claiming that they always intended to be "underground," that's why they never put their music on YouTube. It's like failing deliberately, just so that you can claim that you never failed since you never tried.
Honestly, I really hope no musicians are in this immature mindset of not wanting to "sell out" by being mainstream or being available on mainstream platforms.
I can understand not wanting to compromise on one's ideals or preferences for the sake of mass appeal however, to maintain an underground status for its own sake is clearly wrong. If what you enjoy is truly good, it shouldn't need an underground status in order to be enjoyable.
>>6723
This guy makes far more sense. Although I do wonder why a musician would reject putting their music on a more known platform. If you want to share it with people, you'd want it in a place where people can see it. If you don't want to share it with people, why place it exclusively on your website instead? I guess I'd have to ask an artist that question themselves.

>The point is obscure musicians didn't upload to youtube. They had their own websites and distributed directly
Because there was no youtube (and no bandcamp, souncloud, DistroKid - only cdbaby ) back then, instead you had myspace pages and hundreds of so-called net-labels. They all died out around 15 years ago often taking the music with them to their digital graves. It sucked. Now everything's either on Bandcamp, youtube, spotify or Beatport. Like you used to have all those obscure, tiny jazz labels from Europe releasing avant-garde stuff in very small quantities - they're all on bandcamp now. There's still some vinyl only electronic dance music (rips make it onto youtube anyway) and some niche CD only classical music that doesn't make it onto streaming platforms but that's about it. Japanese stuff used to be famously all physical but they basically gave up, everything's on spotify now. It's awesome.

For you maybe. It used to be a one hit wonder like Rick Astley could retire in his 20s a multimillionaire. Now, you can be Psy and be the number one youtube video of all time and make $870,000 instead.
The difference was that the record labels took the risk. If you didn't sell, they didn't make anything. Youtube flipped that. You don't make anything unless youtube does. Youtube will see you going viral, and then pull you from recommendations until you cough up money for placement. They took all the money out of music and pocketed it.
You can't even escape them, because even if you try to opt out of their scam and don't put your music there, some else surely will. YouTube was founded on piracy, and is still a pirate site today. See viacom vs youtube case and the internal emails where they state this as their core business plan: Pirate like hell, find a buyer, and sell out, letting the buyer eat the liability. Of course, the buyer was Google, who are masters of the rigged California jury.

Dust Belt – False Horizon [Various Appeals – Vampyric Screams...]
An organic fusion of synthesizers, field recordings, tape loops, radio static...
Buried in lo-fi. Decorated with tape saturation. Post-industrial. Academic Noise.
Max Gudmunson's experience with a whole spectrum of equipment never ceases to amaze, at times, even shock. "Solaris" -like experience – otherworldy, unimaginable. Every re-listen gets you even further.
A tender, tasteful touch to noises from various gold standard apparatus is being a perfect sidekick to a leading synth. If you're long enough into noise music, you will start to appreciate the usage of space in a composition, both statically and rhythmically.
Totally a breeze of fresh air to the scene. Anyone who missed his "Ecocannibalism" masterpiece must fix this as soon as possible.

Before the recording industry boom in the 20th century musicians would make their money performing. What's been happening for the last 20 years is that we're going back to how it used to be. The world in which a pop star could retire on the strength of one single was a historical anomaly and it's not coming back. I'm so tired of all this whining about the revenue from recorded music cratering (it's actually growing 15%/year but whatever) when the revenue from live music more than quadrupled in the same time period. It's just completely irrelevant because the recorded music is not a product anymore, it's an advertisement for a live show. You're not supposed to make the most of your money from a video on youtube or even music streaming - it's a way to promote, gather attention of your fans so they'll come see your show and maybe buy your merchandise. That's where the real money is. And if you think that payola is a problem youtube created I have a bridge to sell you 'cause it's a problem as old as radio.

>The world in which a pop star could retire on the strength of one single was a historical anomaly and it's not coming back.
>That's where the real money is.
You sound confused. You say the money is gone and never coming back. No one will retire a millionaire in their 20s again. Then you turn around and say this new approach is where the real money is.
You know what that sounds like to me? Conditioning. You're repeating the google propaganda and have no idea where the real money is. Youtube, Spotify, iTunes, these companies are gorging on real money.
>You're not supposed to make the most of your money from a video on youtube or even music streaming.
Only youtube and spotify are supposed to make money, right? The recorded music is the product. Big Tech turned musicans into sharecroppers.

Be careful with this one Lain. When I found it I couldn't stop watching it. I would watch it on repeat. I almost lost it, but pulled back from the brink. I'm happy now, but if you're not in a stable place, it could push you over the edge.

You could follow logic
Or contest it all
The work solution makes the common house a home
The element of progress
That you mention is gone
It de-evolved to something you were headed toward
As I lay to die, the things I think
Did I waste my time? I think I did
I worked for life
All we want are just pretty little homes
Our work makes pretty little homes
Like a cast shadow
Like a fathers dream
Have a cut out son
What's a worse disease
To get that pretty little home
As I lay to die, the things I think
I don't want to regret what I did
And work for life
All we want are just pretty little homes
Our work makes pretty little homes
Agenda suicide
The drones work hard before they die
And give up on pretty little homes
(Like a cast shadow)
Our work makes pretty little homes
Our work makes pretty little homes
Agenda suicide, the drones work hard before they die
And give up on pretty little homes

I like when things are more obscure. The mainstream doesn't need to know about every artist (ik this is an elitist view but seriously if all I heard at parties were my songs I'd listen to something else)

i get what you mean but maybe you should word it differently. There's a thrilling sensation in finidng that 20 views gem. It's not about being elitist or contrarian, just the satisfaction of finding unknown stuff that you enjoy.
It's not really my case cuz my taste in music kinda forces me to be into more obscure stuff, but if i was a fan of rock i'd try to discover small unknown bands

https://mtvghosts.bandcamp.com/music - I've only listened to Five Sides of Time and Tri-Pop. Very interesting music. Sounds like it comes from a dream or an alternate universe. Something from another place, outside our space and time.
https://youtu.be/XrVwH9lOvek - Industrial avant-garde rock. Wish it got more recognition. Based lyrics such as "DESTROY ALL GIRLS"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LcNialAuaI - Young rock band from Texas. Very surprised they aren't more popular, although one of their songs was featured in the new Tony Hawk game. Nice kids.
https://donsalsa.bandcamp.com/album/koolaide-moustache-in-jonestown - Pure insanity. On the edges of what should be considered music, but you can jam to it and it's certainly art. One of a kind. Huge recommendation. Genre breaking soykaf.
https://frankokay.bandcamp.com/album/errors - New guy. His art is as good as his music. Similar to mtvghosts. Also a really cool dude, talked with him on instagram a while back. Truly passionate.
https://youtu.be/ska4lkFMTM4 - Forgotten Greek 80s band. Feels a bit like Joy Division?? Picked up some traction recently due to an alleged connection with "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet", which is also very good.
