Japanese bands?
lain is love · 2019-04-29 19:29
Hello there lainons. Any good japanese bands recommendations? I'm thinking more about some niche bands rather than straight jpop. I discovered lately here (or on arisuchan) Mass of the fermenting dregs and also i like monoral so i thought maybe you can recommend me some more japanese music (alike or not) that you like or think is good.

Kikagaku Moyo -- psychedelic folk, COMFY stuff, one of my favorites
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZDstZ1-EAI
Boris -- you've probably heard of them, if not they make drone metal mostly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9yA5FYkaXs
Melt-Banana -- avant-garde metal, very similar to Fantomas if you know who that is

number girl is a late 90s alt rock band from japan. it's one of my favorites, and I literally listened to school girl distortional addict at least once a day every day for over a month.
tha blue herb is one of the more known j-hip hop artists, but what sets them apart is the dark undertones. don't really know how to describe it, but it seems more pleasantly eerie than much of the rest of the scene.
if you wanna go back to the classics, blue hearts is widely considered to be the origin of j-punk. they're often dubbed the sex pistols of japan, but in comparison they're far more pop.
nisennenmondai is my favorite japanoise group, but unlike the big names like hanatarash and aube (both of which are still great artists that you should check out), nisennenmondai is less industrial and more instrumental. still surreal and experimental, but using only a guitar, bass, drums, and effects pedals.
mentioned in another thread about breakcore, DJKurara is a breakcore artist that is notably dark and surreal.
bonus band: kinoku teikoku. they're a fairly well known alt pop group, but I felt the need to mention them considering how much long goodbye affected me. (even though I didn't really like any of their other albums)

Les Rallizes Denudes is THE original Japanese underground band. They had a repertoire of roughly 15 songs, but each had countless variations thanks to their drawn out and jammy nature. Most of their songs were abstract walls of psychedelic noise, but some (like the one I linked) are more ethereal and dreamy.

kikagaku moyo is very very different from Boris and Melt-Banana :P
Haruyoshi · 2019-04-30 05:42
Boredoms, Vision Creation Newsun and none of their other albums:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdPCt5ZEf40
Psychedelic music synced to this very moving tribal drumming, mass amounts of drums.
Acid Mother's Temple and assorted solo projects, dozens of albums, so no good single album recommendations. & Flying Paraiso UFO is all over the place, & Cosmic Inferno is more rock/blues, Kawabata-san's solo work is a lot of weird guitar experimentation. Cometary Orbital Drive and In C/In G are good "gimmick" albums that are interesting to listen to.

Man i liked this more than i should! Thanks a lot!
PS these mp3 are very good quality perhaps converted from flac?
Fred Nurk · 2019-04-30 07:32

Glad to hear! I mostly, wherever possible, take flac but convert it using lame -b 320kbps and try not to trust other's mp3 encodings (possibly transcodings). I always keep the encodings only for space usage reasons.

>lad to hear! I mostly, wherever possible, take flac but convert it using lame -b 320kbps a
When i want music on my phone i convert whole library to mp3 using ffmpeg. Here is my sick command (take notes if you want)
>find . -name "*.flac" -exec sh -c 'ffmpeg -i "$0" -ab 320k -map_metadata 0 -id3v2_version 3 "${0%.*}.mp3" && rm -f "$0"' {} \;
converts every flac file in current folder and subfolders to mp3 (doesn't change place of mp3's).
I like quality audio (you can say im audiophile) so noticed instantly. 320kbps mp3 can be good if it's made good (mostly they aren't that's why they say mp3's are worse)

I appreciate the input, but I've got my trusty little script that does basically the same thing https://notabug.org/strlst/dotfiles/src/master/bin/deflac
Only reason I sometimes use LAME is because I dual boot for work related reasons and don't want to reboot when I slack, but as far as I know LAME -b 320kpbs and ffmpeg -b:a 320k should be identical in quality, it appears that way from the ffmpeg doc at least https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/MP3

I'm digging Yunomi
www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKXzq37aybA
Waifu Wednesdays YT channel has some cute Future Funk, Future Bass, etc.
www.youtube.com/channel/UC-wNjNTqCfXSKd4S1tNgWUg
They just started a Tokyo Wave channel which is a project to expose more local Tokyo music to the world:
www.youtube.com/channel/UCzoinqTgfEaQsKFFi9Tdmkg
(Japanese "cute culture" is a post-WWII western GCHQ PSYOP ("war guilt information program" propaganda) to emasculate Nippon's imperial warrior spirit and make everyone docile effeminate simps - but I like the cute music, so meh)

Godiego did the OST's for Monkey Magic and Galaxy Express 999.
A lot of their lyrics are in English.
Monkey in particular were a huge influence on a generation of alternative rock bands. There are almost as many bands named after the series as there are named after elements from A Clockwork Orange.
There's Pigsy Roared, The Stone Monkeys, Tripitaka, Monkey Majik, and Monkey Swallows the Universe, and I'm probably forgetting a few.

I'm surprised that Hikashu has not been mentioned so far. Afaik it revolves mainly around their frontman, but has existed and released continually since the eighties, so their work is quite heterogenous. Early stuff is mostly synthwave with an experimental bent while later releases go full on experimental jazz/rock.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAIww8ZnkmQ&list=RDEMr05rFLpPz3c4VAlys_mG8w&index=6
Link is one of their early synth-hits.
Umi is a nice progressive rock band, quite unknown afaik.
https://looprider.bandcamp.com/album/umi
Bonus: Lo-shi – actually two French guys living in Tokyo. But I like them and they're also quite unknown.

>Ian F. Martin's book 'Quit Your Band!' is kind of a nice, if not comprehensive and highly subjective reference work for Japanese alternative music. If you like the stuff I recommended, might find more along these lines in the book.

Highly recommend Shinsei Kamattechan (weird indie/noise rock) and Fishmans.
Someone already mentioned Number Girl and Zazen Boys, they are also great.
Also specifically "New Album" by Boris is really cool.
