I've been using itunes (like the normal user that I am) and I'm sick of not being able 2 play FLAC files! I want 2 know that u guys think is the best music player 4 PCs. Hopefully anything that's free, runs well, isn't spyware (like itunes probly is) and can play FLAC files.
Neo · 2018-12-26 21:12
foobar2000 is the best for windows afaik

This seems pretty cool but I don't understand these audio controls! I click on playback/next but it just stops the song altogether! Also, after a song finishes in an album, the next one doesn't play automatically...

Actually, never mind. I found out what I was doing wrong!

If you're running windows 10 (which, btw, you shouldn't), you should be able to run cmus via the bash port of windows
Void · 2018-12-27 05:59
for gui players I use audacious, because I like how it looks, there is even a SEL theme on opendesktop. for cli I use ocp reworked versions even support FLAC and it can run on a windows cmd (have not tested it myself).

should be=For cli I use ocp, reworked versions even support FLAC
Jens Hansen · 2018-12-29 08:14
I use cmus on Linux
There is also audacious which comes with a gui
Crash Override · 2018-12-29 09:38
Clementine is the best.
Use Clementine.

Why do choose to use cmus over something like ncmcmcpp or whatever its called?
John Doe · 2018-12-31 13:29
>>3072
cmus is straightforward and really small, has all the features i need... Why choose anything else?

If you're not scripting mpd or running it on a headless server there's really no reason to have a separate daemon for playing music unless you like complication for its own sake.

Convert flac files to alac and keep using itunes. Lossless formats can be converted to other lossless formats without loss of quality.

I hated having 2 do that, which is 1 of the reasons I wanted 2 switch. I'm using foobar2000 now and I'm super glad I changed!

Listen, man. Encouraging anyone to continue using Itunes is kind of a dick move. Don't be that guy.
Dr. X · 2019-01-12 01:21
I've been thinking about this for a while. I've been thinking of making something to publish a playlist on one of my computers so I can use VLC to smplay on my phone when I'm home. For that I just need an http server, a generated playlist and files in an accessible directory. Not quite the same as cmus or mpd but maybe an acceptable option, at least for my interests
Ender · 2019-01-12 03:38

mpd has a built-in http server to do exactly that.
Bobby Newmark · 2019-01-12 06:52
Foobar or nothin

I'm glad it works well in Wine, because I haven't been able to find anything like it that runs natively. I mean, there's tons of music players available for *nix, even some with plugin APIs like foobar, but I've yet to find one that's had enough plugins made for it to support the vast majority of game/tracker/etc. music formats out there.

For music players is there any advantage in using JACK atop of OSS/ALSA instead of raw OSS/ALSA?. Have compiled JACK support on audacious-plugins right now and I want to know if realtime support is useful when only listening to moosick.

If Windows, (switch to Linux) I'll use foobar2000
If Linux, mocp for CLI, audacious or deadbeef for GUI
Naomi Nascimento · 2019-01-23 20:34
foobar2000 for windows
vlc for leenex

my nigger clementine is my favorite application. i just which the windows fit correctly on smaller screens, besides that it's always been perfect to me.

Not really, unless you frequently need to patch audio between applications and devices on the fly. I use jack because I make music on my PC but if I didn't I would probably just stick with alsa (definitely not pulseaudio).
Dox · 2019-03-10 19:31
I've been using mpd + ncmpcpp.
It works fine and library management is a fun feature.
William Holtzer · 2019-03-10 19:33
DeaDBeeF, although i couldn't make the search plugin work.
Gilgamesh · 2019-03-11 03:45
MPD with any mpd-player.
Agent Smith · 2019-03-15 00:13
Windows: Foobar is the best, the alternatives all have some sort of annoying problem. Winyl seems promising but it needs work.
Ganoo slash Leenucks: mpd+whatever frontend strikes your fancy
Hacker · 2019-03-25 08:26
i use quodlibet on linux, provides a nice cover view and other views like itunes. Before that I was using clementine but was cluttered.

DeaDBeeF (basically foobar)
lain is love · 2019-04-23 06:21
clementine better than empty deadbeef

I prefer strawberry to clementine, given the ability to directly specify audio output device and the higher quality playback.

gmusicbrowser master race
it's sad how i'm the only one who ever mentions it anywhere anymore
The Fin · 2019-04-26 17:12
Gmusicbrowser for playing music from my library, and Audacious for individual files. (Audacious is the successor to X Multimedia System which is the UNIX equivalent of WinAmp). Its served me well since SlackWare.
Nell · 2019-04-26 21:43
for win32 use xmplayer. It's quite lightweight, but you'll need a plugin for flac support.

Lollypop on Arch
Not perfect, but I find the layout so great I can just browse the album list looking at the covers while listening to music and be content
