I keep trying to find new IDM but it all seems like rehashing of the past. Take some Aphex Twin percussion, add in some Mouse on Mars cute sounds, some Oval clicks, some Autechre glitch and some Boards of Canada ambience and stir. I listened to a bunch of the stuff posted and most of it seemed to follow some formula like that, nothing bad, but nothing great, all lacking the inventiveness of those founding bands. Clark was pretty great though, will be listening to more of him, while he definitely paid a heavy homage to the fore-bearers, he really has a structure and sound of his own. Will work through the rest of these as the days go on though, only listened to a half dozen randomly selected so far.

>>2795 IDM was never meant to be a genre, nearly every artist who's been labeled with the term hates it. Most of the classic artists from the genres are egoists, and they steal the limelight from people in other styles. In fact, if you read between the lines Aphex Twin has been mostly taking the piss for whole stretches of his career. I have no idea why people take his music seriously as some kind of intellectual thing. It is definitely very good music, but Richard himself isn't shy about the music sometimes being parody, or not serious, or nostalgic retreads. I don't think Richard was ever trying to be a progressive artist in the same way that say square pusher was *attempting* to be. I have *no idea* why anyone would lump Boards of Canada with IDM. That band came way later, and was closer to being ambient in my opinion. Autechre is closer to being on some kind of intellectual trip, but I wouldn't even put them in the same genre as some of the other stuff that gets called IDM. I mean, autechre is arguably not dance music at all. I would describe Autechre as "mildly interesting MaxMSP patch" and leave it at that. For the people that like Square Pusher, they think the genre is about single virtuoso style artists, and I guess the genre makes more sense that way, but square pusher is it's own thing too. It's a little closer to being "dance music" but I hear more "eclectic" and "idiosyncratic" than virtuoso, or "intelligent." Like that whole album where Square pusher plays bass (the art of the modern bass guitar?) I am just torn listening to it, because it feels like it is at the same time both good and terrible bass playing. Last word I have IDM as a genre is that I really think that labeling so many things as IDM kind of shuts out some other genres that don't want to be associated. Like, anytime you bring up IDM a lot of the breakcore dudes get roped into that same discussion. I don't think guys like Venetian Snares should be called IDM, and I do think that IDM artists rip off that sound and take advantage of that confusion. Like, when Aphex Twin plays come to daddy, I can't help but see that as a watered down version of breakcore, where one artist is profiting from a sound that they don't even like, while actual brekacore artists get left out of the discussion. You could say the same thing for a lot of people in the ambient electronic genre, who don't necessarily want to be associated with IDM. Aphex Twin gets to call himself an "ambient" artist, and all the dudes who actually *like* ambient music get ignored.

>>2798 Few if any genres were meant to be genres, they grew on their own and continue to do so. Boards of Canada are there because they are clearly a heavy influence on modern IDM, I never said it was IDM, work on that reading comprehension. Genres do not have some mythical power, they are just an easy inexact way to converse on such topics and the bands within any given genera tends to change from social group to social group, these are not concrete boundaries. They offer a quick way to give an idea of something, you can look up IDM, get a rundown of it and have some idea of what all the bands listed here will sound like, what they draw upon and so fourth, we do not all have time to research every band we come across as individuals and few would expect that out of anyone. Any reasonable person knows and understands this without even thinking about it. Also, the argument against the IDM label was just that suggested it was dance music when much of it was quite undanceable, not that this stopped anyone from dancing to it, which is why Richard D James suggested 'Brain Dance' as an alternative and most of the genera hopped on board. But the audience never really cared what the label was or what it implied.

The issue with IDM as a label, as I said above, is that many of the associated artists want nothing to do with it. The label serves Richard and his cronies more than anyone else, and actively saps energy away from the ambient/breakcore scenes that do not want to be associated with his sound. When I write breakcore music I cringe when people call it IDM. Like I said, when RJD made tracks like “come to daddy” he intended them as a joke - he doesn’t like breakcore sound and smack talks it, but tries to sell everyone that IDM and breakcore are the same genre. When someone searches IDM and they get this list of artists, it makes it seem like they are all in the same scene the same way a bunch of dark metal bands are, playing the same venues and what not. The title misleads people. WhIle we are the topic: what do you guys think of xanopticon? He’s A decent artist that might fit the sound you are going for.

>>2800 I know what you are saying, but few people work that way. They search for IDM and find out about it and learn about what most people consider IDM and if they like it they look into it more, they talk about it with people and they find out what that person considers IDM and learn about more bands. The only people that I have ever met who have such strict view of such things are the ones that obsess about these labels, and they are in the minority, for most it is just a guide to simplify communication and everyone has their own ideas of what does and does not fit within a genre. Few bands fit into a single genre unless you stick to the most generic of genres like pop, rock, electronic, and even than it is blurry at times, you either accept such labels are flawed but useful or become a bore to everyone but the taxonomist. Personally I would say any electronic music outside the academic scene which puts its primary focus on composition of the music and the sound can fall under the IDM label, that does not mean they are IDM, just that they have qualities of IDM. As far as RJD is concerned, he is a pragmatist and business man who also makes some great music, he knows most do not care one bit about the labels, but he also knows there is a group who will see his rebelling against and label applied by outside forces as a sign of artistic integrity, it is win win for him to do his feigned attacks on such labels. If he or anyone else under the IDM label actually cared they would have actively fought against it, but they didn't, they almost never mention it unless they are questioned about it. Xanopticon is essentially new to me, heard him once years ago and forgot. I am about halfway through Liminal Space, some things about it are impressive, but it is not the sort of thing I am in the mood for often. After the first 5 minutes you pretty much know what the album is about, does not change or develop much if at all, or at least not yet. Will likely explore him more, shows potential for having created something I will like a great deal.

>>2621 > 3. Aes Dana - Pollen Damn this soykaf is good. I've always loved Aphex Twin, Autechre and Boards of Canada but I haven't really explored the genre and sub-genres. I'll be sure to, now.
