I don't know what it is about MCR's song Helena, but I listen to it over and over. I think it's the driving beat and the overall pattern of building tension in the song. I used to think Black Parade was top notch, but not so much any more. I still think it's really good and I really appreciate MCR's willingness to try new things, but I've come around to the critics who said that the song was a bit beyond the band's ability to pull off.
Debbie Charteris · 2018-08-07 14:29
>>2520 Black Parade is a damn good song for what it is. What do you/they mean by being beyond the band's ability to pull off? Where they trying to convey something different than what came off?
Incognito · 2018-08-07 19:41
>>2520 I feel the same about Helena, absolute masterpiece! As for Black Parade, well, I don't think it's their best song, but it's definitely one of their most memorable!
Rick Deckard · 2018-08-08 04:11
>>2521 Well, just to be clear, I do think Black Parade is an excellent song. The reason I am slowly coming around to the critics is the lack of story unity. With Black Parade, they tried to go beyond the boundaries of the genre a bit. There were multiple sections to the song combined with the very heady storyline about a dying man who envisions this parade of the dead coming to take him away. Very philosophical stuff. I think the problem was that when you listen to the whole album, the song doesn't really become the linchpin to the set that it is supposed to be. With the exception of a few songs, the whole album is this song cycle about a guy who apparently is a jerk in life, but then becomes fatally ill and fights a losing battle to reclaim the life he wanted to live. It's very operatic in concept, but MCR as a band is really more geared towards songs like Helena which is more standalone and in-the-moment rather than story-oriented. So their goal was a lofty one, but the more I Iisten, the less I feel like they were able to pull it together in some crucial way. I don't know if that makes sense, but that is what I meant.

>>2525 Oh I get what you mean. I hadn't noticed it before since I only listen to its songs as standalone pieces since it isn't exactly a conceptual album. All of the songs revolve around the same theme but I still feel like they weren't exactly supposed to be connected. But that's only my appreciation.

>>2520 I'm still loving The Black Parade because it marked me a lot in my youth for personal reasons. It isn't the best song of them but means something for me. Also, what do you think that is their best album?
Void · 2018-09-06 04:45
>>2632 I can't say for certain. With a lot of bands I paid attention to songs here and there, but never got the whole album. I think the only time I recall going out of my way to picking up a whole album (for this kind of music in general) was with that band Dresden Dolls. I actually pirated the album, listened to it front-to-back, then realized I only liked it for the lead singer's voice. I never picked up or listened to another one of their songs again. I probably owe the band 20 bucks or something for the album. That's just kind of how I was with the emo stuff.
Void · 2018-09-07 18:52
Obligatory this is not what emo™ actually is post MCR is still really good regardless

>>2643 Gerard Way, lead singer and founder of the band despised being labelled emo, but the truth is it was the closest applicable label. MCR had some punk going on, but there was a lot of emotional venting that seemed to be the hallmark of emo music.

>>2643 It's definitely a lost cause. But that's OK, there are plenty of different genres with overlapping or identical names. Hardcore (punk) and Hardcore (electronic music) comes to mind. Rites Of Spring are good, eh? To further confuse.

I see there are a lot of mcr song in this thread so I'm going to post a few good soykaf > To the end - MCR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWwJLm1R1W4 > Cubicles - MCR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueT0J2OLYbY MCR is one of my favorite bands but I really don't undestand why they were getting worse with every album. > Bullets 10/10 > Revenge 8/10 > Parade 5/10 > I don't even remember the name 2/10

>>2802 Depends on whether or not you're discussing the commercialized punk stuff. For example, "Self-Destructive Anthem" by Days 'n Daze is very raw in terms of technique (musically and lyrically) but I think it's closer to the spirit of punk in a good way than a bad one. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a_xqKfqv9jA
Spooky · 2018-10-26 00:52
>>2669 "emotional venting" isn't really a useful metric. While emotional lyrics were one of the main things that set early emo music apart from other related music there have always been exceptions to the rule. Cap'n Jazz and Algernon Cadwallader are two great examples of emo bands from different periods that lack confessional and emotional lyrics. Ultimately what it comes down to is a shared musical and cultural heritage, which bands like Linkin Park just don't have with, say, Jawbreaker. That's probably not very good phrasing but I'm having trouble coming up with something better at the moment. The point I'm trying to get across is that there's a strong sense of continuity with canonically emo bands in that they come from the same scene and at least somewhat musically influence each other; even if they have somewhat disparate styles. This kind of close relationship doesn't include bands like 30 Seconds to Mars and Green Day, which have very different origins. Regardless it's an uphill battle at this point and vernacular has rendered emo a legitimate label for a very different style of music than it originally referred to (and still does).

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

A while back a friend told me that American Idiot by Greenday was 'unironically a great album'. I laughed at him then, but after listening to it a few times I think he was actually right; or at least it's underrated.

For me my favorite band would have to be Billy Talent. For some reason here in the states no-one's heard of them, but they're really big in Canada. They definitely are a little more punk, but seem to fit the bill albeit better than most
