Anyone listen to medieval music? For example, http://www.ancientfm.com. Seems like there are groups out there composing and performing music in the medieval style.
Kind of interesting from an academic point of view. Medieval music was tuned differently than music of today, so modern musicians are kind of approximating the sound without being able to recreate it directly.

Dowland is the greatest rock star
Koichiro · 2018-07-30 19:07
In fairness though, Dowland has been dead for almost four hundred years.
This brings up a question, though. Is it possible to bring current or future generations into some form of appreciation for such old music? Can it be relevant in their lives or does one have to wait until they have outgrown that musical phase?

There was a sort of art/goth group in the 90s who did an album of not medieval songs but madrigals. The group was called Miranda Sex Garden. It was all vocal too, it wasn't modernized.
When kids reach a certain age and realize that the supposedly archaic elements pasted onto songs by their prog and metal heroes are cartoonish and fake, if they are still interested they might seek out the source material.

Thanks for the links! I'll check them out.
I'm not sure I was expecting to see anything. As far as I knew I was the only person in real life who listened to this type of music. Sure, you hear it in games and films and whatnot, but that always seems like background stuff, not the main attraction.

This song immediately came to mind when I found this thread. I think it is called "Oak and Ash and Thorn."

Wow, that Oak and Ash and Thorn song was pretty impressive. Also based on a poem by Rudyard Kipling. It's always interesting to hear poems adapted into songs.

Susato's Danserye is really cool. Here's a period interpretation and a modern setting by Patrick Dunnigan.

I wish that it was possible to buy medieval and ren era instruments without breaking the bank

Recorder flutes and psalteries (lap harps) are fairly cheap. Plastic recorder flutes can easily be found and there is quite a bit of music for them.
Ocarinas date back even further. I'd recommend a deeper-sounding ocarina than the small and high-pitched ones often sold for really cheap prices.

But it is? Those instruments are so popular these days that Thomann sells store brand versions - lutes, renaissance and baroque guitars, ouds, citterns, harps etc for 300 - 500 euro. They even have a grand theorbo, that one's pricer but still, the idea that a store brand theorbo exists and you can just order it is something completely mind-blowing to me. What a time to be alive.
Marly Krushkhova · 2018-11-28 06:50
Anyone have baroque and medieval guitar? Tangentially related but I'd love some kind of book on learning that style of guitar that I can translate to my modern one.

Do what a lot of people did back then, build one. I knew people who built their own instruments before.

Check out the Lark in the Morning website. They have a psaltery there for 60 USD
https://larkinthemorning.com/collections/zithers/products/yerbonitsa-large-musicmaker
Also some other interesting instruments for you...
Small Kalimba (which is African and not European Medieval/Renaissance, but possible still worth looking at) for just under 50 USD
https://larkinthemorning.com/collections/kalimbas-sansulas/products/15-key-flat-thumb-piano
I'm pretty sure Pan Pipes have had a presence in Europe. This one is a little over 40 USD
https://larkinthemorning.com/collections/panpipes/products/zampona-bolivia
A Tabor Pipe is a three-hole flute and was very popular in Europe. This one retails for a little over 50 USD
https://larkinthemorning.com/collections/tabor-pipes/products/whs090b
So there's a lot of stuff out there that can be had for relatively cheap. I don't work for Lark in the Morning, even though I just posted a ton of their links. They just have a lot of the Medieval/Renaissance instruments in one place and a lot of their smaller stuff goes for relatively cheap. If you want the Bouzoukis, Mandolins and other more famous instruments, well there you may have to pay and arm and a leg. The cheaper stuff tends to be folk instruments, which prevailed quite a bit in the Medieval era before music really became organized later (as I understand it)

>Mandolin
Oi hold up, Mandolin is awesome but it's not a Medieval/Renaissance instrument, it was invented in 18th century.
Sabo Engle · 2018-12-03 13:01
If anyone has music from the early Ottoman empire it'd be appreciated.

That's a good point. I guess I mentioned mandolins because the site sells lots of different instruments from different eras and places. I probably just saw it as I was looking around. It's still worth looking around the site, I think.
