what makes it cyberpunk
Debbie Charteris · 2018-06-23 20:59
>>2095 Just started listening to it, I guess the electronic tones? I'm not a huge fan of death grips though... First song is "Death Grips is Online", so maybe they were aiming for that? I'm gonna have to listen further.

Haters get out; this is a Death Grips chan.

First of all Death Grips are among the most "cyberpunk" bands in activity right now and if you haven't even heard about them (?) you're seriously out of the loop. A mix of hip hop with digital hardcore. >On Year of the Snitch I'm a bit sad they moved on from the gabber sound of the last EP in exchange for this new, synthy sound, but at the same time this sound is great so I can't really feel that bad honestly, listening to it. I feel like the bass-tones have also started to emulate jazz a bit more with this album which is fuarrrking awesome. Really fits too. Drumming top notch as expected. Now towards the middle I'm getting reminded of vapor trap; another genre I love. Past the middle as well as at the end speed's ramping up in their signature hardcore punk fusion style. Sonically I'm noticing less harsh, over-blown distortion and more balance in tones as well as in the mastering. Great groundbreaking album / 10. Will repeatedly listen to again / 5. Leaked free on every platform again as usual! Six feet deep below the street So they can't never say soykaf again fuarrrk the man with a thick broomstick And put a black flag on the end DEATH GRIP'S BACK WITH ANOTHER ONE!!!

>>2092 I appreciate this album (except cover artwork)
Crazy Jake · 2018-06-24 00:25
Really enjoyed it, though it is not as good as Bottomless Pit (their best record). Favorite track(s): Death Grips Is Online, Black Paint, soykafshow
Rick Deckard · 2018-06-24 20:23
>>2103 I'm inclined to agree with you. If we're talking about Death Grips cyberpunk I'd point to their earlier albums like The Money Store, Government Plates, and No Love Deep Web. Especially the track hacker. I wish Death Grips still had this sound. New album was pretty lame. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoZgZT4DGSY

>>2108 I remember that I used to listen to Money $tore and especially 'hacker' when I coded some ELF executables encryptor based on methods described in early 2000 underground article. It was awesome. This album definitely has cyberpunk aura.
Anamika · 2018-06-25 18:17
It was a good album. I think they went a bit overboard with the singles building up to it though I'd already heard like half the tracks when I listened to it so it wasn't as exciting. Arguing if death grips is cyberpunk or not is pointless because cyberpunk is an arbitrary label which means different things to different people.

>>2112 >Arguing if death grips is cyberpunk or not is pointless because cyberpunk is an arbitrary label which means different things to different people. I would put that another way actually. I think we can agree that a dystopian police/corporate state future is closely related to cyberpunk, but we don't even need to agree. Now, some people express their cyberpunkness by opposing the dystopia loudly. These are the guys who say BOO to anything surveillance and closed source while cheer loudly when libreboot or gpg are mentioned. Some people however express it through the very values they oppose. They write a book titled 1984, or give you a /tay/ board. Lainchan has many posters belonging in either group. However, the group that expresses their values by loudly opposing the dystopia has a good portion of people who are hilariously bad at understanding the other group and that they hold and express the very same values in a different manner. They basically behave like 8 year old children who take absolutely everything literally and get hurt if you don't explain humor and irony to them. This difference has lead to many a flamewar if something was cyberpunk or not, as the literal people constantly misunderstood and tried to fix the ironic/orwell-style ones. Meanwhile, the ironic ones tried to keep the bar high and not let the culture devolve into gnutardism. Eventually people just walked away with the impression that you can't call anything cyberpunk without at least someone disagreeing, thus "cyberpunk is subjective".
Agent Jones · 2018-06-26 03:11
the money store is definitely cyberpunk
Lain Iwakura · 2018-06-26 13:12
>>2113 Language is actually pretty soykaf at expressing abstract concepts, so people end up arguing about arbitrary definitions which only exist due to language. for example, "what is art?". Really the question is stupid because the word "art" is just a poor compromise to describe a concept which is undefinable, but we need to use it in order to communicate. Then people conflate the word describing a concept with the concept itself, a bit like how the little icon you click on your desktop isn't actually the program you're opening, but un-savvy people may think it is. Cyberpunk is completely arbitrary and kind of too abstract for language to describe because language is like kicking dead whales down the beach at dealing with that stuff, but instead of realizing this and accepting it people still argue arbitrary definitions like it matters.
Boris Grishenko · 2018-06-26 13:41
>>2121 I don't disagree with you, but I think the disability of language doesn't alone explain the soykafstorm around 'cyberpunk'. Some abstract concepts are pretty well understood and agreed upon even though they are affected by the same flaws of the same language. There's an extra layer to why cyberpunk is so disputed, which my post adressed
