Music Services

Morpheus · 2018-06-04 18:30
What services do the lainons here use to listen or download music?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, In future please elaborate on what music services you use and why you want to discuss music services.)
Liet Kynes · 2018-06-04 18:34
>>1993 Spotify, but most of the time I download my music and listen it with MusicBee.
BloodCat · 2018-06-04 19:32
Rutracker and /mu/ share threads.
Pris · 2018-06-04 19:37
Soulseek for the most part. Sometimes rutracker, direct downloads from music blogs, or good old fashioned file-sharing with my friends. >>1994 >Spotify Are you fuarrrking kidding me, anon.
Joe Bloggs · 2018-06-04 20:44
>>1996 Give me ONE (1) (I) reason why I should change it with something else.

>>2000 I just read all of the info you posted, including links and such. >block all app permission >not connect your account to facebook (I mean come the fuarrrk on) >use a throw away mail service >not pay for the service, even better, use a modded apk so you get premium features That should be enough to have a "secure" account on spotify. The only thing spotify can mine from you that way is the music you listen and how often you listen to it, but youtube does the same thing so pick your poison.
Unspecified · 2018-06-05 01:55
>>1997 You're already pirating by ripping things off Spotify so why not get higher quality files on soulseek or rutracker. Its just as easy, and the catalog is comparable. The fact that you can get Spotify within your spyware tolerance doesn't even have to be a factor. Pirating the conventional way is just better by any standard I can think of. Also, since the privacy aspect does seem to matter to you: denying those permissions does not prevent Spotify from making a record of your music taste. Maybe they can't pin down your name or associated identities but you're still contributing to Spotifys datamining operations.
Nemissa · 2018-06-05 02:00
>>2002 >>2001 Sorry, I just noticed that you already addressed the datamining bit. I don't know why you'd assume I'd support YouTube though. I dont have to pick my poison in this instance because filesharing mitigates the issue entirely.
Agent Smith · 2018-06-05 02:34
>>2002 >>2003 There's sometimes I want to listen to a song I haven't downloaded yet when I'm at my job or when a coworker recommends me something and I can't find it on youtube. That's my case use. I have a flac capable portable music player so I don't use it as my primary music device, but others could see benefit on crippling spotify access to your stuff. Also the thread is about music services my man.
Splicer · 2018-06-05 02:58
>>2004 Yeah I figured OP just meant "where do you get your music". I'm not even talking about flac necessarily though. Lossless isn't that important if you don't care about archiving. I transcode to mp3 whenever space is a concern. But high quality mp3s sound noticeably better than youtube or spotify streams. I'll use streaming sites like youtube to preview music, I just don't see why you'd get your collection from spotify when there are much better options available.
Frank Garza · 2018-06-05 07:20
I usually stream music from these sites. https://lainon.life lainchan radio, all mixed bag. http://somafm.com lots of stations with diverse genres. http://hbr1.com has some electronic music. If i download music i just torrent what i already want or look up stuff on ektoplazm. http://ektoplazm.com, has large selection of high quality free electronic music.
BloodCat · 2018-06-06 08:49
torrents and free bandcamp downloads downloading in flac then transcoding to 96kbps opus .ogg if space is a concern~
Random · 2018-06-06 12:40
SMLoadr, and ncmpcpp+mpd. Occasionally I'll have to go through ncmpcpp's tag editor and fix the dates to be the album date, otherwise ncmpcpp will display it as one album being multiple, seperated by the different dates.
Faye Valentine · 2018-06-06 12:48
I listen to shortwave radio and occasional satcom pirates
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2018-06-06 20:58

Ivan Petrov · 2018-06-09 11:56
discogs + soulseek is all I need

Debbie Charteris · 2018-08-12 05:27
Xiami, free music streaming and downloading with an absurdly huge library the catch is the Chinese government knowing what you hear, I could sign up without knowledge of moonrunes and a mail.
The Phantom Phreak · 2018-08-12 07:19
I download everything through private trackers.
Ender · 2018-08-12 13:52
>>2538 Oh yeah, I used NetEase back in the day. Is Xiami like that? Does it have any sort of region lock?
Boris Grishenko · 2018-08-14 00:41
>>2041 soulseek is fuarrrking amazing
Rick Deckard · 2018-08-18 23:04
>>2543 look, few years ago when the mobile domain starting with .m was opened you could download anything without an account, on desktop browser was needed an account, nowadays you can't download through browser you need the app and an account (I reccomend locking permissions with Xprivacy or alike on android), the account I use is a taobao account I created with some random new mail and for the region lock you can't use Tor, anything else should be fine.

>>2008 DI.FM is decent too and has tons of variety https://www.di.fm/
Sipho Nkosi · 2018-08-19 17:51
I get a lot of stuff from DDL links on niche blogs. Blog owners usually take requests too if you're looking for something specific.
William Holtzer · 2018-08-21 15:36
What alternatives to spotify do you guys recommend? I only use spotify for the discovery feature as i get most of my new music from there but i feel like i've listened to almost everything spotify can recommend me. Before spotify i used foobar and just torrented everything, but there were many things that i coudnt find without a private tracker.
The Phantom Phreak · 2018-08-21 16:15
>>2597 see >>2041 although i use rateyourmusic more than discogs.

soulseek, youtube and spotify
William Holtzer · 2018-08-24 02:44
soulseek, some trackers and sometimes i just buy some directly from bandcamp if a really like the artist.
Lunch · 2018-08-24 13:57
>>2603 >some trackers Any recommendations? Is rutracker still the best public tracker for music? I've been using soulseek exclusively since whatcd went down, but I still prefer torrenting, and would gladly switch back if I could find something of similar quality to soulseek. I'd even get back into private trackers if I could find one that didn't have crazy ratio requirements. Also, is there a headless soulseek client yet? All my music is on a computer that isn't always running a gui.

Getting Music: - Spotify for social, playlist sharing, discovery, finding nearly any artist, not having to download everything to my phone, etc. - Bandcamp for more underground stuff, downloading mp3s and supporting artists - TPB, rutracker, soulseek, search engines, bing, etc. for getting albums and songs in mp3 format. I'm not too picky about quality and tagging so it's easy to find this stuff. I put all these files onto cloud storage and can download them to whatever device I need via SFTP. - Youtube/youtube-dl sometimes for hard-to-find stuff - Netradio since there's a lot of great internet radio stations (shoutout to lainon.life) that have good music for coding, plus you can find links to local stations. Listening to Music: - Blackplayer / Apollo / Foobar on android to listen to albums I download - MOCP on linux since it's a simple, batteries-included terminal utility for playing music and listening to netradio. I've tried MPC+MPD+NCMPCPP but it's too complicated for not enough functionality. - Foobar2k on windows since it's awesome China: - 网易云音乐 / Netease Music since it's practically the Chinese spotify, also has a lot of great foreign artists without copyright problems for free. Plus when you download songs it just dumps the mp3 to your disk! - 虾米 / Xiami Music since it has some artists Netease doesn't - 迅雷 / Thunder / Xunlei, basically chinese torrenting with a proprietary client... even though it's just base64 encoded links it's very convenient to find thunder links online for anything that's not streamable and download it through the android client. >>2000 Nice GET, but we're not all religious software zealots. If I want to have shared playlists or share links to music with friends, it's practically impossible to do this without Spotify. >>2543 If you get a mainland china proxy you should be able to have all functionality. Functionally the two services are the same. Then if you have wechat you can login with that. But if you're concerned about surveillance you're better off not dealing with any of these services.
