Hey, what's your opinion on metal? Wha about FFDP, Sabaton, Disturbed, etc? Anyone into this stuff?
Guthrie · 2018-05-27 21:59
>metal
I like some of it.

I used to listen to lots of Stoner/Sludge Metal
Checkout channel Stoned Meadow of Doom for some introduction
I also listen to black metal and blackgaze when I am really depressed
And when I am happy I sometimes listen to good old stuff like Kill em All by Metallica of Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden
>FFDP,Sabaton,Disturbed
well...
I am not into this stuff.
I think metal music has something like entry level and if that's true then FFDP,Sabaton,Disturbed belongs there.
I need something more sophisticated, probably I am a bit of a snowflake.
Some recommendations from me if you want to broaden you horizons (or become a snow flake):
Band [especially recommended albums by this artists] -> genre (it's often generalization just to give you a preview)
Elder [Lore, to be honest all albums are great] -> Stoner metal
Naxatras [Naxatras (2015)] -> Stoner Metal
SpaceSlug [all] -> Sludge Metal
Boris [Pink, Heavy Rocks (2002)] -> they change genre from album to album, it's hard to generalize here
Deafheaven [Sunbather] -> Blackgaze
Batushka [Litourgiya]-> Black Metal
Mgła [Excercises in Futiliy] -> Black Metal
Some gropus/albums which are more like rock, psychodelic rock or experimental rock that you might find interesting:
King Gizzard And The Lizzard Wizzard [All 5 albums from 2017 except Murder Of The Universe] -> their genre is being awesome
Thee Oh Sees/Oh Sees [Help (2009) Orc] -> garage rock
Ty Segall [Melted] -> plain rock
Battles -> do you like to repeat yourself?
Tame Impala

I like symphonic/opera metal with female vocals like draconian and a few other bands but I particularly like the vocalists draconian has had, although in their music I would prefer the male vocalist not participate at all. This music I appreciate primarily for musical beauty, hence the focus on female vocalists.
In terms of message and mental effect I think second wave black metal can't be beat. Especially the many bands that are inspired by Burzum's atmospheric style- my favorite being filosofem, although I really like the classical guitar playing and clean vocals of Ulver's second album kveldssanger. I think that a lot of new black metal bands which try to create atmospheric bm or dsbm are in this style, but I have also seen a lot of bands claiming to be within this genre but their whole style/aesthetic and message is basically a darker version of hardcore or emo bands and is often totally against the black metal ethos, sadly I'd put deafheaven in this category even though I do like their musical style.

I'm more of a Doom/Drone guy, but Sabaton is pretty good. Don't really enjoy the others. I've been listening a lot of Spectral Lore (pic related) recently and am enjoying it a lot. Black metal with enough individuality to avoid the hardcore/emo pitfall >>1935 commented about.
I second >> 1934 recommendation of Mgła and Batushka; they are really incredible.

> probably I am a bit of a snowflake
...or you just have taste. A lot of people hear that crap and assume it defines all metal and turn away before getting to the good stuff. I guess I'm lucky, my "entry level" stuff was Slayer, Black Sabbath, Sepultura, etc.

Never listened to FFDP and don’t care for Disturbed, but Sabaton is one of my favourite bands - was able to see them a little while ago, I think it was end of last year they came out, they were insanely good the only thing that sucked was how short the set was (1 hour) because they were supporting a bigger act.
Been a metal fan since my early teens (mid 20s now). Got into it through Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer, then got into melodeath like Children of Bodom. After that I looked at death metal like Death, and started checking out death/doom like Disemboweled. Then I started going more towards straightforward doom and stoner - Black Sabbath, Sleep, Boris, Conan, Candlemass, Warning, Electric Wizard, etc.
I don’t keep up very well with new metal, I don’t often find new releases I like which kind of is like kicking dead whales down the beach, but classic albums of my last 15 years of listening to metal still stick around on my playlists.

I like some sub-genres of metal. I think metal is a bit too broad of a term. Infant Annihilator and Judas Priest are both metal, but nothing alike, for example.
In a couple of days, I'm playing guitar for a friend's djent band. Only had 4 days to learn the songs so hope it goes well.

Now there's a name I had forgotten. I feel like the 90s I remember is not the one recorded in pop culture history which remembers only grunge, gangsta rap, and maybe black metal because some of the guys were terrorists. It's a shame.

With your "90s I remember is not the one recorded in pop culture" you remembered me one of my favorite metal band: Helmet
Album Betty is a masterpiece
I am actually sad I forgot to mention it on my list
What else can I add is that you should give a try to Killing Joke first albums (from debut to Outside the Gate (yeah!, It's great!), I don't really like their later albums)
Dox · 2018-05-29 22:15
I love metal, but I mostly listen to doujin groups like Pizuya's Cell or Undead Corporation instead of more mainstream groups.
Melodic metal makes my virtual penis hard though:
https://hooktube.com/watch?v=17p6ufiPFzQ
If anyone knows any other doujin groups that do a lot of original songs, let me know since listening to Touhou arranges all day gets repetative.
