Getting into Western Music

It is rather shameful to admit, but for the last 12+ years, I have been primarily listening to touhou doujin arranges and obscure 70's/80's j-pop. My exposure to western music is rather limited, and I am trying to get more into it. Maybe this could be the thread where someone posts a Japanese song they like and someone posts a western recommendation based on that.

Huh, I guess it finally posted. This was originally a long ass post, but I had to neuter it to three sentences to get it posted. Here are some touhou doujin arranges I like. Will post old j-pop in next post. Hoping some lainons can provide me some recommendations based on this. https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=tx0IU1lrZPU - Rainy Rainy Days, SOUND HOLIC, 3L https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=uWi-_omFACM - LUVディテクター, SOUND HOLIC, 野宮あゆみ https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=ZRoGh14g5d4 - 背徳のAgape, 幽閉サテライト, senya https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=MU8LCqvf3pE - アマノジャック, 幽閉サテライト, senya https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=_CCcc0wjoZo - nirvana, Aftergrow, pyn https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=JzaalsvO3YQ - 華は春に還り, Shibayan Records, 831 https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=9TdixeZ52C4 - 満月の宴, Assaultdoor, pianoYN https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=P9v67WkR76M - I will Never Forget You, ALiCE'S EMOTiON, 野宮あゆみ https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=dIcETu39MsQ - 幾星霜の夜空, Amateras Records, りこ。 https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=F26ZDmRp_G8 - root C ／ =ALL, Syrufit, 桃華なゆた https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=6rqO_ZFeqRM - Taboo Silence Dolls, CYTOKINE, aki https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=5qo7-QQz1y4 - 彼岸花, 幽閉サテライト, senya https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=kK2R02s9OGE - アンロジカル, 幽閉サテライト, senya https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=rJ1TNlJCPFU - Yb Allul, SOUND HOLIC, 3L https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=RQzlC8bQoFI - RED TEARS DOLL, SOUND HOLIC, ユリカ https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=lG3yE1bnQ1I - 星屑のダークサイド, SOUND HOLIC, ユリカ https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=jX4CjSP4XB0 - flower, SOUND HOLIC, A~YA https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=g9hgOml7Igc - Ain't no mountain high enough?, SOUND HOLIC, A~YA

I don't listen to the stuff you listed but... maybe this album is what you'd like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56xNddccIqo&list=PLOJWuc3CN301J73ULOw8Jr-xf3Y_qVkQm

so the genre closest to the touhou doujin stuff i guess would be eurobeat or old EDM stuff. actually i'm pretty sure eurobeat was the inspiration for that kind of music because it was really popular in japan in the 90s. you are probably familiar with the genre from initial D. I don't listen to eurobeat anymore but I used to (when i was doing pizza delivery part time). these are just the most popular i remember but there's a HUGE amount of eurobeat mixes on youtube. (posting normal links because i use a local front-end) https://youtu.be/zYtOIAblUHs - Natalie / Heartbeat https://youtu.be/5KGVBKaCLWs - Ace / Crazy on Emotion https://youtu.be/YdHO0R4FeyQ - Niko / Night of Fire https://youtu.be/G9HTYueVqN4 - Ace / Adrenaline https://youtu.be/-OsCLjzRQs4 - Lou Grant / Don't Stop the Music https://youtu.be/6DqF86_1T6k - Speedman / Speedy Lover Are these close to what you were searching for? some genres like 東方 VOCAL - Nirvana are pretty unique to japan imo but i could be wrong. root C ／ =ALL, Syrufit, 桃華なゆた and some other songs reminds me of the Twilight album from Boa for some reason. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhR408jNIIlOG67yU2KgGZeMcSQOVi1QJ As for the 80s-90s pop the only thing i listen to that's comparable is Tears for Fears i guess? maybe Depeche Mode. sorry if i don't have many recommendations but i listen to pretty much only DnB, game/movie OSTs and ambient stuff now. are you asian by the way, or did you learn japanese by yourself?

You don't have to like all of it, but try to find something good in each song anyway.

>>14636 Japanese: 1979 Casiopea, 1982 Mint Jams - inspired by jazzy-pop mixes of background music, apparently Western: 1970s "Seeburg 1000 music" or "3m Cantata 700 music" are great pieces of background music genre

So far, the recommendations here managed to hit the nail on the head. >>14639 I really enjoyed this album, lainon. I particularly liked Butterfly Kisses. >>14642 Huh, I wouldn't be surprised. These were some pretty interesting eurobeat tracks, but none that really struck a cord with me immediately. I listen to specific touhou eurobeat stuff, on occasion, but it doesn't make up a significant part of what I listen to. I checked out the Twilight album, and I didn't know Duvet was a part of it but not surprised. I really love the Lain opening and listen to it when I feel down. It feels very healing. I checked out the rest of the stuff in the album, and it really resonated with me. I particularly liked Twilight and Welcome. >Tears for Fears >Depeche Mode Any specific songs/albums you recommend from them? As for 80's American music, I don't care for it as significantly as I do 80's j-pop. However, I think my favorite western song from that era would most be definitely be Break My Stride by Matthew Wilder. I am not asian, but I taught myself Japanese. I'd say I'm at the point where I understand most of what's going on. >>14644 Had some really enjoyable recommendations in here. A lot of them clicked, but there were a couple that didn't. produk 29 [101] stuck out to me, particularly, as something that clicked. I also liked Piano Fire, Star Guitar, the Discovery Album, and Hello Everything. I especially liked the Hello Everything album. Star Guitar makes me think of "liminal spaces" for some reason - like playing around on an empty Garry's Mod flat sandbox map at 3AM in the morning. I appreciate the effort you put into giving me recommendations. I'll try to branch out from the ones that clicked with me.

>>14637 Thanks for posting these, my fav is Yb Allul but I downloaded pretty much all into my touhou folder. You also posted a song of shibayan records, but if it was me I would probably post more of them, because they are my absolute favorite. You said western music analogues but I find that I like pop music or whatever was on the radio much more enjoyable when I listen to western music. But I doubt you need something like that recommended since its not nieche at all.

>>14740 OP here. I used to listen to the radio pretty frequently on the way to work before I made a USB with all of the touhou doujin arranges I could want. It's great to roll down my windows at a stoplight, make intense eye contact with the person next to me, with Neko Miko Reimu playing on full blast. To avoid being pretentious, I try to see the good in some pop songs, even though they sound like repetitive slop to me. But I primarily listened to the dad rock station. My problem with radio stations is it seems like the ones in my area play the same 5 songs. What were some songs you liked on the radio?

>>14850 Had some more Shibayan I was going to post but forgot to. >>14852 >Tracking link What happened to this place? Did everybody good leave and just the 40iq soykaf remains?

>>14853 >oh he doesn't have the url cleaner extension..

>>14855 >Very not lainon statement >>14856 >>14853 >Very lainon statements

>>14669If Star Guitar and Hello Everything were the strongest hits, try Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children, Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough, and The Avalanches - Since I Left You. They cover the hazy electronic texture, intricate programming, and sample-driven side without just repeating the same radio tracks. For clips rather than albums, keeping direct links like this thread does is best. When a music edit escapes into X/TikTok/Instagram and the source gets buried, nimi.wiki's public video rankings can be useful for finding the circulating version again.

>>14853 I don't care about google tracking bro yes I have 40iq

>>14636 OP, are you me? The thing is, Touhou music is all you need in life. Get a hard drive and download TLMC. I went through most of it and shrinked it to around 400 gigs (lossy, .opus version). At the end of the day, Touhou music has so much crossover, you can find anything you want really.
