Where do you guys find new music?
Nameless · 2025-04-23 14:31
Just a little bit curious, you know?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf. Where do you find new music ? What do you mean by new music ? We don't know you didn't elaborate ?)
Curry Man · 2025-04-23 14:42

Youtube playlists, Spotify's algorithm (you can find cool stuff sometimes), RateYourMusic's Forums and the site itself, sometimes going to record stores and buying random soykaf if it looks cool (kinda like gambling) and talking with friends who listen to a lot of music

Up to about a year ago Spotify's algorithm would pretty consistently recommend music that I ended up enjoying. At some point I listened to too much terrible music on there and now it just spits out some of the most impressively unlistenable music I could ever imagine. It's all lo-fi emo electronica.
It did turn me on to Otay:onii, so for now I hold out hope that someday it'll redeem itself.

Make a burner email, get free trial of a streaming service for its algo recs and depending on what you use, get a downloader for that service. If one doesnt exist, just use soulseek.

Local shows usually can put you onto good stuff; the bands probably suck, but music's the main thing to talk about, so you can get some sweet bespoke reccs.
The one downside is that you end up with a large collection of local band tshirts and nothing to do with them.

Very frustrating trying to get this post to actually post. It's more than enough and high enough quality in comparison to other posts itt. Aggravating to say the least. Last pic is the post that isn't good enough for absolutely no reason...

Nothing has been better for me than a healthy RYM friends list
You can create charts based on ratings the people you follow have and RYM even has an esoteric chart setting to find stuff that isn't extremely obvious
Outside of that, RYM lists, and genre charts or label pages.
I sometimes feel bad for depending solely on 1 site (one with a pretty mediocre community to boot) but I'm old enough to have searched for music prior to using RYM and I really just don't think I'm somehow missing out by primarily using it.
I like the idea of exploring obscure blogs to find recommendations but it feels like significantly more work for frankly very little payoff.

n00b lain lol
it's the b00m3r word in your text that triggered the filters.
I like Aesop Rock a lot. I can't seem to finish the discography because I keep listening to couple of his songs on repeat for months. They are so damn good, he's becoming my favorite rapper, love him.

>new music?
I have so much old music you never heard lainon
come down the rabbit hole with me
Fred Nurk · 2025-06-04 07:34
Youtube in general. It does not have to be "new". Sometimes I just search something like "full album 1999" (or concert) in the hopes I something interesting shows up from that year. Worked ok until some new artists decided to name their albums after years in the 90s and 80s. Also nice to find really old stuff (60s, 20s).
Otherwise find some artist you like and look for what bands they played in before.

used to find music via YouTube algo but it got really frustrating for me, now I use SoundCloud to find music. my music tastes are very obscure and weird that one can only find them on platforms like SoundCloud and stuff.
try to see which artists you like and where the majority of your desired music is published and just click left and right to find a song to add to your playlist, think of it the same way like that one wikipedia game

there once was an app called iRate
where you could download music without being a piRate
you download songs and rate them all night long
and then it will give you more in the genre where you belong
fsociety · 2025-06-13 18:34
Don't search for "brad is like kicking dead whales down the beach" unless you want gay porn btw

But let's be totally realistic here
You aren't listening to any of these
you're long gone
>I cast no shadow
>leave no trail
>no trace of me at all
>no evidence

Quite often I check artists on collab tracks/EPs.
A fun activity is to head to SLSK, browse random users files who have some correlated taste, and then look for similar or very different things they also enjoy. Download a random, unfamiliar album, and check it out.
SomaFM net radio is pretty good too. Surf the channels and you might find a cool track, leads to finding cool artists and the artists related to them. SomaFM is what turned a 90s electrohead like me onto bossa nova.
Also, though I dislike Wikipedia, it can lead to some interesting suggestions. I wanted to check the influences on bossa nova, and found a style of music called choro, which was very interesting. You can also look up artists and see who they say influenced their work.
Ask people online for suggestions. I've found some really mind-expanding music this way, by what other people who love music consider to be great. Though of course, be selective in who you take suggestions from.
Just a couple things I've done you may find interesting to try. I think it's more fun and interesting than algorithms.

There's this french public radio called FIP, which broadcast the most eclectic mix of music, I found lots of enjoyable things there. They also have a dozen of thematic webradios.

I listen to the OST (original sound track) of any shows I like and whatever my oshi idol is singing.
