what do you guys think about the recent societal dissdain towards classical music(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)
Sipho Nkosi · 2024-06-06 02:31
Ever since the pandemic no ones been the same. Its really messed up man.
Pulse · 2024-06-06 02:31
Classical music is like a shining gem atop a mountain of coal. I love it so much and it's sad to see nobody likes it
Technician · 2024-06-06 02:33
>>12254 I dont know why but the way you phrased this really spoke to me. Bless your soul kind anon
Lord Nikon · 2024-06-06 02:34
>>12254 >nobody likes it literally who never listened to classical music purposefully, but there's no way i can dislike what i heard. it's just not the kind of music you want to listen to while being home
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2024-06-06 02:38
>>12256 I listen to classical music all the time. At home, at work, and in every other part of my life. I do it without thinking about it, I take it for granted, like breathing. Its like a shiny gemstone or something
Y.T · 2024-06-06 03:12
I'm obsessed with classical music or something
monoe · 2024-06-06 04:03
i don't think there is any "recent" disdain for classical music. most people who find it annoying or pretentious or whatever probably have always done so, meanwhile classical music playlists get millions of streams/views
Lady 3Jane.. · 2024-06-07 05:17
>>12262 Gotta agree with anon here. There's alot of good classical soykaf out there. There's some modern classical being played at my theater in this hole of a town i'm in. pretty good chunk of people went to see it. (tho ofc it didn't sold out all seats) in my experience classical music is still enjoyed to a wide audience. and cinema has such a love story with classical. to me it's hard to imagine someone actively have dissdain towards classic music.
Eldon Tyrell · 2024-06-07 08:16
>>12262 There must be some kind of new Tiktok trend making fun of classical music. I can't think of any other reason OP would make that claim
Case · 2024-06-08 06:03
>>12252 I didn’t know this was a thing, but I read a paper talking about the simplification of music over the years. I guess most people just want to hear a lot of bass and catchy lyrics nowadays. People‘s choice of music changes based on a lot of social factors. Some classical music was seen as trash in its own time.
Agent Richard Gill · 2024-07-03 12:44
There isn't disdain. People listen to classical orchestral music in movies and games all the time. People just hate classical music snobs who soykaf on people for not worshipping Mozart. Also this is the music of glitterboy European aristocracts and the accursed bourgeois. Its the same reason people hate indie rock because of the association with snobby hipsters.
BloodCat · 2024-11-25 11:19
>>12252 I don't hate it I'm just not that into it because I'm more interested in timbre modulation than pitch. The nature of the sound itself rather than where they're arrange on a grid.
Neo · 2024-11-25 11:29
>>12262 This. There are a huge number of concerts and festivals, big dates are often full weeks in advance, the most reputed venues have yearly subscriptions, there's been a renewal of movie-concerts or movie soundtrack concerts, and so on. It still is a mostly upper-class thingy and many concerts are still expensive, but there's plenty of cheap ones, often in churches even for non-religious pieces, and I'm not sure there's been a time in history where that many people listened to classical
Hong, Guil Dong · 2024-11-25 20:56
I like the more melodic classical music including Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, etc., but when opera comes on the classical station I can't get to the radio fast enough tp turn it off Pretentious, forced bellowing and screeching isn't my idea of good music.
Fred Nurk · 2024-12-04 01:58

HELIOS · 2025-03-03 01:07
One reason why classical music isn't that popular (even though it actually is as people pointed out) IMO is simply because it's old. Everybody has heard plenty of it already. Art is supposed to be about creativity, right? So it's not surprising that artists and audiences seek new ideas. Music that is 100+ years old just sounds boring, not because it's bad, but because it has already been fully digested and absorbed by our culture
Yet Another Lainon · 2025-03-03 02:52
What makes you think there's any recent increase in disdain for classical music? I haven't seen it. I've always liked some classical music ever since I was a little kid -- the more melodic stuff like Chopin, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Massenet, DeBussy. Like any other genre of music, there's also a lot of stuff I don't care for. For instance, I can't get to the radio fast enough to turn off opera. It's not the music, it's the pretentious, artificial bellowing and screeching.
Agent Smith · 2025-03-03 04:13
>>12355 Is that still true today? This sounds more like an inferiority complex from low culture people to me. >>12663 >Pretentious In your head. >forced Like all vocal techniques beyond pop singing for musical babbies. >bellowing and screeching Case in point. Snark aside, I dislike most opera but Wagner's Ring truly is something else. I especially like how the singing isn't put on a pedestal, it's an instrument fitting equally within the whole in importance. >>12974 It hasn't been digested by the individuals in question, though. Truth is that for most people, music is just a social thing, a background track; in which case, your remark of "digested by culture" makes sense. Let's be honest, they don't really care about music. But what you should have mentioned is that the zeitgeist associated with "classical" (all periods) is something of the past, so the music rarely resonates with what the modern person feels.

>>12252 I really don't know what you're talking about. Most people I've met IN REAL LIFE like classical music even if they don't listen to it. Nobody is gonna think you're a giga autist for liking Satie.
Zero Cool · 2025-03-05 13:33
I've been digging pretty deep into classical for the last two years or so, and I just love it so much. My friends even care to listen when I ramble about it, and I have manged to gather a small group of them that semi-regularly attends concerts with me. I started playing violin too, and it maybe kinda sounds like not ass anymore, sometimes. It's fun. >Recent social disdain I haven't experienced this, but I obviously think classical is underrated.
Overture · 2025-03-11 08:22
Classical music itself is much too broad to fear any sort of meaningful disdain. Disdain is largely harboured towards notions and idea's surrounding classical music. The most common criticism is probably 'snobbery' . Classical music is also so vast, and different to contemporary works it's become much more difficult to access and appreciate than contemporary works. People generally will write it off for this reason, (especially in this age when accessibility and ease of listening is deified) and blame their reason for writing it off as some general criticism that floats around nowadays.
Lain Iwakura · 2025-03-11 09:27
>>12271 Paper link? I'd be interested in the arguments. "Simple" music has always been popular. Symphonies are not something the average person had access to for most of human history. Folk music, which is typically simple, is what most people listened to most frequently. The music that spread was the music that was simple enough that many people could play it. I'd also suggest that there's a lot of popular music now which is more complex than given credit for.
Apoc · 2025-04-21 07:43
>>12252 I don't know. To me, it seems to be having a resurgence rather. It's more popular than ever.

>>12974 >>12262 >>12252 Western Art Music lost its cultural relevance when they went in for ugly=good atonal garbage in the 20th century which destroyed the audience for the genre and directly lead to the genre having to be bankrolled by academic institutions. This in turn lead to academic-gatekeepers being able to doggedly insist that anything beautiful or musically coherent or not ugly was bad and shallow for nearly a century, permanently destroying all cultural relevance of WAM. Phillip Glass and the minimalists snuck tonality back in by dressing it up in mathematical formalism and austere repetitive frameworks that made it dead and boring enough to not trip the "shallow" alarms of the academic gatekeepers but it was too little too late. Now there are contemporary composers who make good tonal music again but the genre is a dead institution, it has no promotional apparatus or even an idea of how you would effectively promote a classical musician in the modern world. Hence, people who have classical composition style skills and tastes but want to make a living make VGM and soundtracks now. If a classical composer who is genuinely talented and makes tonal music figures out how to market himself correctly, there's no reason there couldn't be a classical superstar in the modern world. Genre boundaries are totally broken down at this point. Young people are only very loosely fans of a certain genre to the exclusion of all others. If a good composer could figure out a way to build an image for himself and tiktok bait people effectively you could absolutely see a mega famous successful classical musician in the modern world.

Simply put, "Classical music" is not what an average Joe means upon saying "classical"; de facto, light music (Eric Coates and such) or early elevator music (Muzak Orchestra, Seeburg 1000's melodies and such) gets mistakenly described by folks as "classica" due to all the same strings, the same musical instruments used
Tequila · 2025-10-23 02:44
>>14126 This lain explains it perfectly, Nietzsche Contra Wagner too in a way.
Marly Krushkhova · 2025-10-24 04:48
>>14126 In other words, Muzak Orchestra and such won, one way or another. Than, yobs from Manchester and Liverpool got rich enough to pay for vinyl records of a certain Blondie screaming "ONE WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY... OR ANOTHEEEEEEERRRRRR" (that era music was the counter-Muzak in style) then, synthwave movie music happened; academics would fail to recognize it as a genre since 80s movie muisc falls under "incidential music" umbrella term. then, 90s pop music mixed it all together/RnB/etc. At this point, an opera-like singing coming from a simpleton-lke mouth - the early XXI century pop - sounds DISGUSTING to me.
