We Are The Music Makers
Nanashi No Gombe · 2024-05-14 02:57
Let us share in our mp3s and oggs. People are still doing music, right? I've known three other people personally who were making music in high school, now they're all fallen off. I was like that for the last year, but have overcome the musical block finally. Whipped this up in three days, but I'm stuck here for a week now because I don't know where to take it, or if I should take it much further than this
What have you been doing lain? What questions do you have?

This is a little "remix" i did for a friend of mine. (Although i almost didn't use the stems she gave me and decided to do something completely different.)
Also, listened to your song lain, it's really interesting. What daw did you use to make it? If you used one of course.

It's my first song in milkytracker. I used to do Famitracker/Goattracker music in my early teens, I thought going back to the form could get me out of my slump. But I have to learn all these effect commands
Your track is sick by the way! I guess it's a remix of your friends song?

>It's my first song in milkytracker. I used to do Famitracker/Goattracker music in my early teens, I thought going back to the form could get me out of my slump. But I have to learn all these effect commands
I get you lain.
I've used trackers for quite some time (specially schismtracker, which is my favorite) and asides from the most basic ones, i haven't learned the commands. I always end up going to the help page.
Wasn't alive when trackers where used extensively to do games soundtrack and electronic music, but even to this day, most of them seem really easy to use after some hours put on them, and after some weeks, the songs one makes get to be nice. Although for me, it took some months.
>Your track is sick by the way! I guess it's a remix of your friends song?
Thank you lain; yes, it is a remix. Im very slow when it comes to doing music, so i took quite some time to finish the track, even if there was some pressure from my friend end, (with good reason)

OP here
So I've shown this track to a few people while trying to figure out how to take it further, and from two people with a 'classical' musical background, said the bassline in the last half sounds dissonant.
I also have a 'classical' music background; I did this on purpose. I feel like they are just poorly applying their rigid teachings. But on the other hand, I might not be hearing something, I wouldn't be surprised if I've damaged my hearing. What do you think lain? Are they misunderstanding my track, or are they right?
Also no further progress to show. I've had about five different ideas to take it further but haven't been happy with any of them. I've also been quite busy lately, end of semester.

Nice to hear from you again OP.
I listened to your song so i could refresh my memory and i don't really think that the bass is wrong. Same thing goes with the other elements of the composition.
>Also no further progress to show. I've had about five different ideas to take it further but haven't been happy with any of them. I've also been quite busy lately, end of semester.
I started doing a song since the last one i showed but after some time of not really knowing what to do with it, i decided to focus on other ones so that maybe i could come back to it with a more refreshed perspective.
I wanted to do something more vaporwave focused, whilst leaving a lot of elements of early dnb and jungle, I also decided to get rid of high frequencies but i dont really know if it actually works as i intended.

>>12323
I like the techno one. The distorted bass with the hihat is cool near the middle..
Curious what software do you folks use for your DAW/workflow in general?
I'm using Ardour and sometimes Audacity (for playing with samples), Speedrum for a drum sampler.

first: lifelover "destination - ingenstans" sample. 6 min, wip since at least 2023. remotely breakcore. this is The Great Work of mine, though sounds pretty basic compared to most of the stuff here. this is the 2023 version. opus in the ogg.
second: a short loop using just surge xt made in one evening. 23 mar 2024. flac in the ogg.
>>12190 i like the dynamic bass here

>>12454
Cool - Synth in the background makes it sound really nostalgic :D
>>12455
These are really good! Like the transition out of the ambience in the first one.
I find its helpful to live life more and draw from real feelings - carrying a small notebook around for when ever you feel inspired ( even if its not lyrics ) for making music. As far as methodology goes try experimenting with different software or approaches (for some examples: recording ambience, random things around your house being hit to make drums, mess around recording something on cassette tape, make a tape loop or a splice, etc) for what its worth..!
First song is W.I.P
Second song is a synth drone thing with lyrics at end

It reminds me of the Sim City soundtrack for SNES, which is a compliment. A very nostalgic kind of sound. I thought your use of mild dissonance about halfway through was nice too.
I would appreciate any thoughts on the music I've been making. I'm going for dark lofi hiphop with most of it, but I've also done a few narrative tracks that try to tell a story. I've attached three tracks that I think give a good sampling.

Just analyse lots of music you already like, but to do this you need to already know lots of theory and production soykaf, then when you start something new, you already have a clue of what to create without sounding like shameless copying. Also, don't forget to practice and study, things will not come to you that easy.
To be clear, I'm the same guy in the >>12312 and I absolutely regret making this, but thanks anyway for who listened to it.

Well, did you have fun making them? As for myself I struggle to keep working on tracks for more than a day or two, I export them as is and go to the next thing. That's a strange this, I can spend hours polishing code, but when it come to music I couldn't care less
Judge Fang · 2024-09-05 00:00
>>12511
The first one appeals to me a lot, really nice. It's like super chill breakcore?
>>12455
Listen to a lot of music you like (A LOT) and try to think of how you would make something better. If it helps, I almost always have a melody of some sort (guitar, bass, vocal or smth) in my head before I begin. Then I move to drums (I use hydrogen drum machine). Good drums make half of a good song. And by good i dont mean "oooh this kick is soo saturated" but I mean drum parts that accentuate certain parts of the song. Treat it as another melody instrument and compose parts for it to play that fit with the other instruments while driving the rhythm.
As for the creative juices...i dont really know. I just like making music. Is there anytime you listen to a song and think "man I wish it was like this instead"? Make a song that fills in the gaps you notice in the music you listen to. One time I had a riff come to me in my dreams. Think about music so much that riffs start showing up in your dreams and you will be on the way. I don't know if this is good advice but I hope it can help
Here's the finished version of this >>12378 song. I'm not completely happy with everything but I'll never be done otherwise. Ended up going with a downtuned strat instead of me humbuckos

I too find trying to capture feelings or moments in music to be inspiring. Even if you don't end up liking what you made you probably learned something you can take away from it and use for other stuff, or sample it and use it for something else.
I made this after a walk through town on a snowy night trying to capture that feeling.
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2024-12-06 10:23
this track, called ><>, is the last one i made 2 years ago. it was for a /mu/ makes an album thread (the album got removed from bandcamp kek). disclaimer: it's a soykafpost, but is still indicative of my stylistic interest, which is more in the realm of sound collage than focused construction.
i'm wondering if anyone has any advice on increasing output. looking over my meager oeuvre, the common trait among all of it is that i had a reason for making something. art is not catharsis for me (except when i'm overcome by a physical need for it, which i satisfy by improvising on 1 instrument), but more so a complement/contribution to some other thing or for some purpose. i currently have no such reasons/external forces in my life, so i'm not motivated to make anything to practice more. any tips on like...getting into situations that would satisfy those requirements, or tricking myself into them? i made a document of prompts, little kernels from which to work, but that hasn't really worked either.
>>12323
kek i dig the grindy one, though it sounds closer to black metal than grind. i made a similar sounding track except i recorded the feedback i was getting from my computer for the "melody" and put a latin drum loop behind it. added mine for reference.

im in a bit of a rut right now. i had a wretched sinus infection in october and i still don't have my voice back enough to be able to confidently record vocals. for this track i'm working on i did some weird wavestune editing on spoken vocals to get a vocaloid-ish effect with my own voice but i want to sing normally for the verses so i'm kinda stuck for now. the chiptune-y parts were made on my gameboy with lsdj.
>>12738
the song itself is very nice, especially the guitar parts. i feel like the drum production could be tighter and less bassy though. a lot of people make the mistake of overdoing it on the bass with their mixes and that crowds the mix really quickly and can harm the definition of a sound.
>>12735

there are parts of each that i prefer to the others (drum sound in 2, the upper register noodle in 3 around 20 seconds in and the blast beats)
but if you combined the elements into 1 section it'd be cool. not enough variation currently to justify the length, but if it were a segment of a 2 minute long track that lasted like, idk, 8 bars or something, it'd be pretty effective i think.

It's been a long time since I've been on lainchan, but I remembered this thread, and am glad I checked it out. So happy to see so many people come together and just share their music. So much good music too, I saved a bunch (screenshot).
I'd particularly like to commend the acoustic guitar players, who made this guy who normally hates acoustic guitar appreciate what the instrument can do. Wish I knew where to find more music like that.
I've got not much new, school keeps me from pouring a lot of time into something. violence.mp3 I made for a game jam, not super proud of it but still like it. Just haven't been inspired musically either, I tend to write more these days.
Since this thread did quite well, I feel like sharing my best track, There_was_an_attempt.mp3 which was a kinda improvised piece, the best seven minutes of my life, and something I'll probably never do again. I hope you all like it.

This album was all composed in LMMS, which I've composed some of my current album with, though I'm working to make the transition to SC with an interface like Ardour or the Param quark. I'm so sick of LMMS. I've been using it since I first started making music, which was 6 years ago, also the same time I started using linux. Learning SC really got me out of a creative rut I had after finishing that album, My Face Knows Me Well.

I like the first one. I appreciate the risks you took on this.
Wanting to work with a singer (female) on music. I make IDM. I'm very inventive with processing and glitching vocals (microsound techniques, resynthesis, Hilbert transforms).
Roy Batty · 2025-06-04 03:32
fuarrrk guys I don't know what to do.
I started making music when I was twelve. I'm twenty one now. I put it on pause the last 2.5 years to study, in fact only made one song in that time.
I want to come back but everything I've done the last few days plops out stillborn and dead. I follow the process through but can't make headway. I feel like I'm not supposed to do this. How was this was my passion for six years yet I feel I learned nothing of how to do this?
My self-worth has always been tied to my music, which isn't very good. When I was fifteen I made my best song yet, and it depressed me because I thought it was a fluke, and I could never make anything better again. But just as I made headway, university stood in my way...
It would be much easier if I could accept that I am just a listener. I've tried, but part of me wants to try make something... the muscle's all atrophied and sluggish.

Send what you're working on, tell us what your goals are, tell us how you're approaching composition, and then we can try the best to assist you. Art is hard. You can only do it for the purpose of discovering new things or you'll get stuck in negative feedback loops. You're simply going to have to struggle for a while before it sounds good. But to lesson the struggle, read books on what interests you about the art-making process, hang out with other producers.

Getting back into anything takes time. Keep at it and you quality will improve. Listen to music that inspires you. This will give you the fire back
If you'd be okay with posting the "stillborn and dead" tracks, I wouldn't mind hearing them. Maybe they're just rough gems, idk. It's all good if not

This might be a slightly off-topic place to drop this, but does anyone know what the song and the video are from in the YouTube video linked below.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/wTpnAkkq_V0
I've managed to uncover that the song is "Middle of the Night", but in my ear the one in the YT video is a cover, with deeper bass drops, "electric" transitions, and higher pitch. Also, I'm starting to doubt whether the video itself is even a legit music video.
Could really use the help... been scouring the wired for a day so far.

Been debating posting, it's just some noise ambient... experiment of some sort? I dig how it sounds, but I really feel like I am lacking in something, since I don't particularly know what qualifies as 'good' noise ambient.
Particularly around the 4 minute mark, I feel like I could manage more here, it gets quiet. Maybe that isn't a bad thing? I guess anyone who know the genre or at least wants to give a tip or two, lemme hear em. This is the first thing i've come close to finishing in a few months, I have a bad track record of never finishing projects.
>>12190
Absolutely loved and saved that track, I want that in my music rotation.
>>12456
Dig the droning, particularly the higher pitched soft buzzing wavering a bit, building up a tense anxiety for that release at the end. Love it.
>>12689
I love all 3 of these but like the other lainon said, goblins has a likeable atmosphere, plus i very much dig the old-ass MIDI sound, got a good midi composer program worth its salt?

Hopper64 · 2025-06-20 23:58
not my music, but I edited it and like the way it sounds in my ears :) I'd argue the concept gets tired shortly into the song, and maybe it's not worth it's weight at all. Either way, I think the first short snippet of 10 seconds could be used to do something cool.

Feels forced. No distinctive melody, it doesn't know where it wants to go. Was the dissonant arpeggio intended? And you don't have to have these trumpets in your tracks. Do you accept the no-ZUNpet challenge?

>>12387
i fuarrrking love when samples are used like this, it gets quite grating tho i would've liked to see more variations on the different chops, probably would also help leave some more space for the music to shine through. please continue using samples like this.
>>13870
very charming
>>13021
your mixing and sound design are perfect
i find it incredibly surprising despite how short the phrases are and how small many of the variations
>>13924
on fuarrrk the world i'd say both samples are quite a bit too loud for my taste, ends up making the guitar feel. as for the music itself, i would say you've done a good job expressing the feeling through your playing, but not every listener might be able to tell since as i mentioned the music is so much smaller than the samples
east side has a different problem with the sample at the beginning, like the other one has a nice transition from just the sample into the music. this one, the music just sort of appears. i would advise a little bit of feedback from the amp or maybe just letting the strings ring out for a while before the music starts would make it a much more enjoyable listen.
>>13968
hahaha this is gnarly
>>13044
garagefreestyle is a helluva dope loop and i thought the bass drone would be a nice outro but then it just starts up the same loop again? like i guess that would make sense with a rapper but if you're sharing it as a beat i think it could stand to be quite a bit shorter, and it could benefit from some another section
wave is incredibly corny but i enjoyed it nonetheless.
>>12817
this rips. the filter snare, the digital bass, the . the way it builds on itself. when the bass goes stereo is kinda fuarrrking insane.

this is so good, would you mind sharing more details about how you made this? The break chops/drum programming is great, i love the snare rolls. How do you get the ambient sounds to be so clear, is it mostly EQ or ? and that delay sounds great. id love to hear any info your willing to share :)
Jens Hansen · 2026-06-06 12:09
>>14613
Hey there lainanon
Its been around 2 years since I did the song you're asking about, so I might end up getting some details wrong
Back then, my favorite way of producing music was via FL Studio, which is what I used
>How do you get the ambient sounds to be so clear
It was mainly through the usage of Valhalla Shimmer and some EQ. If you go about it in the proper way, you'll get very CRISPY ambient pads
The delay effects were made with the default plugins that FL Studio comes with
Drum programming was made manually and is never the same twice. I think you can notice this clearly with the snare rolls more than with any other element of the drum break
In regards to samples, I stole from a bunch of different sources, BUT, I think that giving them away would spoil the fun
Oh, I also recorded myself playing the guitar, which is clearly audible once the drop comes in
If any lainanon wants the song for free, you can get it here
https://waveracerscollective.bandcamp.com/track/red-looks-gorgeous-on-you-w-sankyorow
And if you're interested, please listen to my new stuff
it's definitely not as HYPER and definitely not as loud, but I personally like it even more that what I was doing before
