How to find cool shit
Roy Batty · 2024-04-20 18:43
Whats a good way to find more indie/underrated music? I wanna listen to more cool stuff that isn't really popular.
Technician · 2024-04-20 19:21
Going outside and find someone local is sure to be a way to find something unheard of.
Lain Iwakura · 2024-04-20 19:31
Go to Bandcamp, if you're not already using it.
There's tons of crap in there, but you will eventually find some cool stuff.
Undisclosed · 2024-04-20 20:15
Look up what was popular 50 years ago in a few non english speaking countries.

I use internet radio stations, threads on imageboards, archives, RYM, last.fm profiles/recommended, playlists, Bandcamp, word of mouth, etc. It just takes a lot of digging, and you kind of have to know what you're looking for. While I don't like algorithms, they can lead to interesting finds every once in a while as well, and you can bounce off of that.

I use RateYourMusic charts and user lists and everynoise.com. Spotify does occasionally give good recommendations. Sometimes also exploring last.fm profiles of users depending on comments on certain artists.
My favourite obscure find (image related) is from a RYM user list that was themed towards a feeling.

cant really find any good stuff in my town. Its mostly with more of a hispanic crowd with corridos and mostly "rappers". I really wanna do a rap rock band later here because soykafs just empty.

Listen to Jedi Mind Tricks and AOTP. You can't go wrong with Vinny and Stoupe.

Have you ever been on a Wikipedia binge? Do that but with everything that sounds interesting to you and using Discogs/blogs/rateyourmusic instead of just Wikipedia. Steal the music on Soulseek, delete the stuff that doesn't work for you, repeat.
There are fuarrrktons of great music out there, but you have to find it for yourself. Learn to be sceptical: music journalism is often dishonest, rateyourmusic is almost always ridiculous etc. Blogs tend to be ok. Youtube is amazing - lots of interesting info in comment sections. Parsing is a skill.
This works best with old music. New stuff has awful signal-to-noise ratio.
I also suggest googling the music that you stumble upon and find interesting, and focusing on forums (phpbb and the like). I always diligently search reddit and /mu/ archive. Bonus:google scholar+anna's archive - some musicology pieces can be very illuminating.
Starting point: Pan Sonic.

thirdworder here too, sadly most of the good stuff is just punk or old rock that was not so underground anyway, the indie kids are boring as fuarrrk
Case · 2024-05-08 03:21
I use rateyourmusic and look up a genre, sometimes I look at people's lists.
The Spotify "radio" feature is good too (it gives you recs based on a particular song or artist).
Jens Hansen · 2024-05-08 03:41
You can also use discogs to view artist pages and find out what other aliases that people used to produce/perform under.
Another way of finding new songs on discogs is that you can lookup an existing song and dive through compilations that it appears under. You might find something similar you like.
Special Agent Bob · 2024-05-09 11:35
Listen to online radio stations, or try this website called Mixcloud
Miho Iwakura · 2024-09-17 10:46
Why would you want to do that? You're a poser, listen to whatever you like and stop thinking about stupid soykaf like this.
