Physical Media
Someone · 2023-12-14 19:53
Hello, is anyone into physical media like vinyl or cds for example. If so, show some of them and give your opinions on it. Even some of your critques!
Like for example I have this album At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash. What are your thoughts about it?
7 · 2023-12-17 12:10
looks like you posted the same topic twice by accident. obvious mistake aside, i love collecting physical mediums and i think i own at least thirty cds..if i ever find them all i want to round them up and talk about each one..i may post photos in the future.
my favourite album is nine inch nails' debut album pretty hate machine, and i'm very sure i own the most copies of it..at least five. a couple are ruined from having been mistreated in 2022 [i was having a rough year] and sit alone not to be touched again.
i like your selection of johnny cash, i've been looking to find some of his music but it's never turned up so far.

I always prefer to buy physical media if possible. I like how vinyl is coming back. I've been able to buy Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Soul Asylum, two albums from Rabbit Junk, and this lofi remix album of Final Fantasy tracks all on vinyl.
My CD collection is ever expanding, too.
I run a Plex server, so I put all my movies, tv series, and music on it so I can watch and listen everything where ever I go.
My most recent addition to my collection is the second OST to Ergo Proxy, called Opus 2. Not only is that a great anime, the OST is great, too.

I was going to post a picture of my own CD collection, but it's too much effort. I have everything by mc chris; say anything; and mindless self indulgence, a ton (i mean a TON) of mixed CDs, plus a bunch of random CDs I've gotten since I was a wee lad in the 1990's, plus my wife has a few dozen metalcore bands and such. If I had to guess, the collection is probably somewhere in the ~150-200s of what is just laying around, not to mention the amount of CDs we've lost from people outright stealing them to a few boxes going missing when we last moved. But it doesn't matter because we never listen to them because I have mpd with ~700GB of music and we can just access that on the network. So, I just have them all put up on a bookshelf that has a bunch of stuff in front of it. Plus some of these albums would have to be taken out and laid on the floor and I'm just not into putting that much effort into it.

It's genuinely a lot of effort for most of them. Here's part of a stack that I pulled out.

I collect vinyls records. The good thing about them is that you really own the damn thing. It's a physical thing which is somewhere in your house. After spending so much time with digital stuff, is very nice thing to have. But it also feels like having an art piece with you. It's something you can decorate your place with and it shows your character. I also feel it sounds better. Although that might just be because the setup I have for listening to vinyls is quite big. So the sound fills the space better. All in all, it is my favorite way to store and play music.
The downsides are kinda obvious. You have to flip the thing if one side of record ends, or change records if the whole disk is done playing. Which is kinda annoying, then on other hand. I feel it's something you get used to really really quickly and it's a minor nuisance. An other one is that they are somewhat fragile. It's not like they break from a bit of bad touch. I had transported a vinyl for 16 hours by holding it on my knees and putting a pillow on top. I'm sure I fell asleep like that few times, yet the record plays perfectly. On other hand, some records develop these minor "pops". I even have one record which one side plays perfectly, and the other one has very noticeable static. Then again, I read it's a common issue with that disc that other people also had. It's most likely that something at the factory went wrong. Nothing big really, but they do get kinda annoying.
All things considered though, I'm very happy with these things.

I would love to show my collection, but I won't be home for an extended period of time. I wish I got a photo of it before I left.
Anyway, I can list a few of my favourites:
- Slowdive LPs
- Minecraft albums
- Nier franchise sets
- really cool eastern european folk collection from my grandparents (albeit very worn)
- "shaman's daughter" by "my dead girlfriend" (japanese shoegaze band with an unfortunate name, highly recommended!)
- my latest purchase: "Anoyo" by Tim Hecker. Great album to space out to--incredibly powerful ambient work.
I mainly collect vinyl, but I've had my eyes on the Lain OST cd for a while now. I will add it to my collection someday.

Great timing on Amazon. I happened to see someone selling it on Amazon for around $17USD. I'm not gonna tell them how much that album is going for now.

Not that lainon, but they are a part of the game soundtrack. You get the game background music but also the music from the disks you can find in the game. Sadly it's not all of the tracks. 1/3 of soundtrack isn't on them. But you get a free digital download for everything though including the missing tracks.
Dujour · 2023-12-20 22:33

1/3 of the soundtrack isn't on there. damm
fsociety · 2023-12-23 12:32
I used to collect CDs and vinyl, but a large portion of my vinyl collection was stolen and a lot of my CDs were lost too. Now I just collect album artwork scans digitally, and if I buy CDs it's going to be to upload on RED.
HELIOS · 2023-12-24 20:38
I don't like having physical copies because it ruins the aesthetic somehow. Like, music is kinda abstract and "in the air" the fact that you can't hold and touch it is what makes it interesting.
Acid Burn · 2023-12-25 09:53
I prefer physical for collecting but there always i issue of it potentially being damaged. Even brand new many CDs skip in some part, why do they have such poor manufacturing? Vinyl is nice but another medium to have to protect from scratches.
>>11852
Air is a physical object and so is sound a physical action.
Linda Lee · 2023-12-25 10:03
Here's what I have
Not that much compared to other people (and too much anyway since I have piles of CDs everywhere), but I'm very happy with what I got. There are a few obscure 10-copies runs in there

It was a CD I burned for my car in 2009. It has a bunch of obscure, at the time, lolicore/breakcore/etc. It had goreshit, lolishit, and a few things from random projects from people I knew online.

i'm an archivist. i have a heck ton of loosless music, too much for my own good. so i decided it would be a good idea to get like 20 cassettes, record on them albums and mixes i really like, and stick to that to stop suffering from the "i don't have anything to listen to" syndrome. Cassettes are a great media, not just for the nostalgia factor, but they can add desirable distortions (warmth) and also holding the thing in your hands or looking at the printed album cover is really nice

Your collection doesn't matter. You have to have at least a remedial knowledge on audio formats and transcoding to get in. They have an interview process on irc, and a website with all the information needed to pass the interview.
You technically don't have to upload anything, but you'll run out of ratio pretty quick if you download a lot. People in the forum can help you think of ways to upload - it's not just CDs. You can scrape from hi-fi streaming services, download albums from bandcamp, or just fill requests.

My favorite band is King Crimson, I think everything they do in terms of physical media is pretty much the best choice or at least close to it. their 40th anniversary CD/DVD releases come with a new mix, DVD audio of the old and new mixes, bonus unreleased audio, a pretty good booklet talking about the history of the album and small facts. For some of the albums they even added video footage, I think Larks' Tongues in Aspic is my favorite from that series because it has the most, it's also my favorite album from them. all of that btw is only 25 USD, no other band or artist does anything even close to the quality from what I've seen, some bands still release new CDs that come with nothing but the album like that have for like 20 CAD.
Vinyl is also 200g instead of of the standard 180g, not a big difference but they're also pretty good releases, I want to get In The Court of The Crimson again, listening on vinyl is better than CD and not for hipster reasons it just makes it easier to focus on the music and having a 12 inch print of the cover art in your hands while you listen to the music makes both the cover art and the music better. Highly recommend King Crimson
Random · 2024-01-06 15:07

What are some albums I can listen from King Crimson? Besides In the Court of the Crimson King. I want to listen something else that is just as good if not better.
Plashe · 2024-01-06 16:54
>>11909
like I said Larks' Tongues in Aspic is my favorite so I usually recommend that but each album is different so going in thinking "I want court but just as good or better" might get in the way of the music you're listening to, In The Wake of Poseidon sounds the closet to Court and is the only other album with the same line up as Court so maybe that might be something you'd like
anyway I think the best choice for you would be to look at the album covers and see which you like most and listen to it cause that's what I did, you can also listen to whatever youtube shows you, just remember to not compare it to Court too much since you'll go in expecting similar when the band has always been about change, if you can't choose then go with Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Discipline or Red, they're the fan favorites
