A website for semi-decent english translations of Portuguese-Brazilian song lyrics
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2023-07-25 04:19
Out of curiosity today I went on to check english translations of popular and less popular Brazilian songs that I really like, and I noticed that most if not all translations are either dogshit or just slightly annoyingly inaccurate in order to accomodate for typical/usual english speech, using synonyms uselessly when direct translations are possible etc. I'm thinking about making a small neocities website to cover some tracks that I find are lesser known and have soykaf translations. I really like the music from my country, and I feel that it doesn't get nearly enough appreciation overseas considering how high quality it is, perhaps partly due to very bad translations. Would you guys like this? Perhaps there is some existing blog out there that does this and that I'm not aware of?

You're wrong
>An error has occured
by the way they spelled occurred wrong. How about this, I'm going to kill the lainchan administration as retribution for blocking my post.

Oooh, I might have been the guy in the Youtube comment sections translating lyrics to English with artistic alterations..... I really liked doing that for some reason. I would love to see a site for what you said though.

Are translations really that bad? Perhaps something is lost in modisms and cultural references. I would be interested in seeing this project!

Might be a better translation than OP can provide though. Sometimes when you know both cultures deeply you can make translations that superficially read differently but elicit similar feelings to native speakers of different languages.

Hello, OP, I might be late to the party but I'm Brazilian and a translator by trade, although I usually work from English to Portuguese and not the opposite. Can you list a number of lyrics you want to understand? I will do my best to translate them for you.

Hey, you misunderstood. I decided to translate some songs because the translations I had found online are bad. I have made the website, not too much there yet though. If you have any suggestions, I would be happy to learn something new. Link to the website: https://brlyrics.neocities.org/

Yeah, for very few songs I could find good translations online. Most are really bad. I can't recommend Brazilian songs to non-Brazilians if there's no decent translation, so I decided to do it myself,

Can you recommend some Brazilian artists you like? I'd be interested in listening to some stuff in Portugese, never personally felt the need for a song to be translated to enjoy it.

I was reading trough your website and stumbled upon this track from Raul Seixas.
"Eu que já andei pelos quatro cantos do mundo procurando"
You translated "andei" as "walked". Why not roamed? It sounds more poetic, don't you think?
I mean, my point is if you want to make better translations than whats available on Youtube you could try finding synonims for words so the translations sounds more "artsy" and less mechanical.
Anyway, good luck.

You could post your "proper" translations on https://lyricstranslate.com and get feedback from professional translators instead of another useless static webpage nobody would ever find.
