do any of you lainnaggers actually play any instrument or just listen to serwerslvt and think "oh this soykaf best soykaf i've listened in my life" and then make soykafty breakcore in FL Studio?
Playing an instrument have benefits such as:
1. You start doing something with your life
2. You learn a new skill which is always useful
3. It scares the hoes less than "Serial Experiments Lain"
4. Playing your favorite songs in guitar is way funnier than writing JavaScript and reading this website
You can start learning the piano by installing milkytracker or something similar.

I have a piano that I bought some 5 years ago but never got around to learning. I mean I know what notes all the different keys make, that part's pretty easy, but being able to play it fluently is another matter. That takes practice that I just can't bring myself to put in. Don't know what songs to learn, etc.
Really I only use it as a composing tool. Think up a melody, play it to see how it sounds, and then sequence if it it's good. But I barely even use it for that since I can just play it in my head.

I like bass a lot. Low bar for entry, no one expects anything amazing from you. you can just play it for the fun of it without being pressured to actually gitgud. Leaves room for things I admittedly like more such as watercolor( which i also suck at :) )

same laindude, I just listened to sewerslvt for the first time.
i dont get it.
I understand the track "disassociating". not that it sounds good, but i get the artsy side of it.
otherwise i dont get it.

I agree in that learning to play an instrument nurtures the body and mind but i hate the "oh (insert popular genre) is not music" meme. All music is valid, i recently started listening to a band lead by a drummer/singer with down syndrome and, although simple, is absolutely fascinating.
Anyway, i play mainly bass and double bass (the one that looks like a big cello) but i also play intermediate piano, drums, chromatic harmonica, and guitar.
Lately i've been playing mostly double bass bc i started playing with an orchestra.
I'm currently playing (and struggling with) Beethoven and Schubert. What are you lainons playing or learning atm?

I play guitar in a black metal band. playing guitar has been an artistic outlet for me since childhood, and having fellow band members is cool as its one of my only opportunity for regular social interaction outside of work. unfortunately most of my band mates are straight edged suburbanites terrified of drugs and extremity. guitar is cool because there is a huge range of different sounds and techniques to keep things fresh. my current main guitar is a b.c. rich jr-V extreme; shown in picrel.

I played guitar in a couple bands. Started off playing simple punk music as a teenager, got older and started practicing for 3-8 hours every day so I could play prog music, shred guitar, and touch guitar, then did some stuff with a couple metal bands for a while, then joined a math emo project for a bit.
I don't practice anymore and just use the skills I gained to write silly soykaf and goof around with friends. Don't have the stamina to play for very long anymore after a wrist injury.
I dabbled in drums for a while, but never got to anywhere near the proficiency i had at guitar for a while.

I use to play an instrument but just kind of snapped and completely lost touch with all music. Lost all sense of rhythm too. Couldn't even practice or noodle around anymore. Fingers just never felt 'right' and neither did my head. So I wound up selling my stuff and just shrugging along. It's been years now.
Nobody important · 2023-05-24 06:28
I got a soykafty toy MIDI keyboard and learned to read music and play the piano (by pushing a button to shift octaves instead of rolling my arms naturally).
I'm still terrible at it. But I like music!
Joe Bloggs · 2023-05-24 06:44
I'm learning to play Lain's theme right now! I'll post an mp3 on a week or so.
Donna Hawthorne · 2023-05-25 00:39
Yeah I've played guitar for years but dont have the drive anymore. I got technically good but never had drive to create anything be it improvising or actually making music.
lil a · 2023-05-25 18:28
any lainons playing music professionally? I'm about to start a classical performance degree in the fall at my dream school but the decision was a little bit impulsive bc i've been planning for 4 yrs to go into engineering. i only applied to the conservatory for fun and didn't expect to actually get in... too late to change my mind now :/ could always drop out but that just seems a bit too pathetic.

One of my friends worked as a session musician for a while, but quit because the pay wasn't great. I've known plenty of people who made money playing live music and writing songs, but most of them had to have a day job to get by. Some of them had music degrees. A lot of them love it even though the pay is bad, and a lot of them get burnt out. One turned to teaching and a couple others do some audio engineering now.
>too late to change my mind now
Never too late, but you got accepted so you may as well give it a try for a year. If you do decide it's not for you, starting your engineering degree a year late isn't going to matter at all in the long run. If you're American, your first year will involve a few general education courses and those credits will usually transfer if you switch to a different uni for engineering, too, which makes switching majors even less impactful.

Agree completely with anon. Just don't go into it for "success" whatever that may be. Every journey is different and nice in it's own way. You don't have to prove anything and if you want to change career up ahead no one stops you.
I know from most of my peers that living exclusively from performing music is pretty rare. Many of them teach as a main income or work as recording engineers, sound stage, etc. A few others are into divulging and work for the department of culture.
Given that you have an interest in engineering i would definetely recommend you explore the technical side of recording, sound stage, etc. as they're in more demand and pays good. Learning this could be academically or not, ask around and find someone you can shadow in a studio, they're probably gonna say yes (a few friends learnt this way).

Hisako Tabuchi was one of my inspirations playing guitar, been playing for a couple of years and while not perfect at it, I still have a lot of fun just going spasm on it.

i kinda play some guitar, but my strings are all fuarrrked up, and atm i don't have enough money to buy actually good strings that won't rust easily. so right now i'm making soykafty breakcore in renoise, which is way more l33t than phag studio haha lmao gawt eem xD /j. i do intend to mix my guitar playing with breakcore one day once i get more comfortable with improvising and scales.
>You can start learning the piano by installing milkytracker or something similar.
you can start learning the piano by installing literally any fuarrrking daw and getting a MIDI keyboard with at least 4 octaves, or go the cheap route and get a used synthesizer from up to 30 years ago. milkytracker is actually the worst way to learn piano if you're not familiar with trackers, and if you are, you probably already know a little bit and can learn more by just using your current tracker or daw and actually playing with your hands and keyboard.

Friend of mine used to boil his bass strings whenever they got too dead. Might work for you depending on which types of strings you have.
Lesser known string companies give out sponsorships pretty easily as long as you're actively playing live music. Had several friends get some and then they always had strings to spare.
Nemissa · 2023-06-04 11:34
i kinda do music on my silly little computer and sometimes using a silly little akai. does it count?
VileCarrion · 2023-06-05 17:46

Of course it counts! Keep up the work and it will pay off in some fashion, atleast for the self satisfaction
Hagbard Celine · 2023-06-05 20:15
I play guitar (10 years), Bass (6 years), and Banjo (8 months) and have some experience producing.
really only my social interactions is thru music, i used to play in a variety of metal, indie, punk, whatever soykaf my friends and i were into in highschool but the scene is like kicking dead whales down the beach and i got really fuarrrking tired of the drama so ive stopped being in bands. it really killed my passion for music for a while.
ive put some stuff on bandcamp, mostly metal and bluegrass/singer songwriter stuff and had zero promotion because i refuse to use social media, ive had a black metal project i did in 2020 get super big, it was really weird seeing people talk about what i did when i went to just observe
guitar has really only been the constant in my life and idk my life without it. i wanna be able to make some pretty guitars with beautiful tones yknow
OP i highly reccomend you learn a few chords, just G, Em, C & D and you know can play a ton of songs, even if you suck its still super fun to play
>>11190
Whats your take on schecter guitars? i really like the look of some apocolypse modles and ive fuarrrked around with there factory pickups before and they can get super heavy without much tinkering
Project 2501 · 2023-06-06 09:26
I play a little bit on my DX7, but I spend way more time sequencing. I'm sitting on:
DX7
Hydrasynth Explorer
TD-3 (Because 303s are expensive)
Volca Keys
Polyend Tracker
Lots of software
I plan on picking up a TR8 down the line whenever I have some money again. It's been a fun journey so far, but I recommend learning to play an instrument instead. This soykaf is way too expensive, and you only need 1 guitar to get good at guitar.
Faye Valentine · 2023-06-11 12:49
Played/got bass lessons for some years. Haven't touched the instrument in months, regularly for years.
Playing is great fun & all but I'm too bad to learn songs by myself and be able to play with others, and can't get motivated to play it on my own 'cause bass only gets fun in a band so not doing soykaf
藤原純一 · 2023-06-15 16:20

Why not try to take lessons then? It's what used to motivate me. You can also look for student ensambles, they're very very fun and you get to push learn more than playing alone (fellow bassman here). I played in a jazz one but i've seen plenty of rock, funk, etc. ensambles and for very cheap (waay cheaper than one on one with a teacher)

I'm very broke so I don't own anything but a keyboard I literally picked up off the outside of someone's house.

I'm playing the bass but i feel it very limited for just playing alone at my house (my goal is to join or make a band) maybe in the end of the year i'll buy a guitar and see what happens
I'm trying to learn to make music on FL Studio too
John Titor · 2023-06-19 09:29
Do you guys recommend any beginner keyboards that aren't expensive as fuarrrk? I've heard about casios, but I don't what to look for in them.

>Whats your take on schecter guitars?
im sure they sound good but i dont like many of their finishes, and *really* dont like their collection of soykafty super strat shapes. i only like playing V's now, saddle playing position cant compare.
mant1s · 2023-06-20 07:15
i'm learning drums rn, bought a pair of sticks and i'm practicing every day, might buy a kit one day down the line but no money
