Releasing music on Soulseek
Joey · 2023-02-25 07:03
I don't know if there are many music artists on lainchan, but I've been considering releasing some of my music directly on Soulseek.
I'd still probably document it on musicbrainz/rym, and I absolutely don't mind having it reuploaded elsewhere, but I'm kind of tired of having to use distributors that are never reliable (except maybe archive.org, but someday, inevitably, they'll have to close, may it be in 2 or 50 years).
I thought bandcamp was a safe heaven but I keep hearing stories of artists getting their whole page nuked without warning just because they host remixes and some copyright holder complained to bandcamp (this is not related to the epic games buy fyi, it was already happening befre that).
What do you guys think about this? If you are also producing music, would you consider releasing it on soulseek only? And if you're a listener, would you track your favorite artist releases there?

Releasing music directly onto Soulseek would make the listener experience nicer as well as keeping more control to yourself, however it may be harder to attract new listeners; I for one never really use SS to "browse", rather just to find something I'm looking for. I'm not a producer, but if I was I'd probably diversify my release platforms at least a bit - releasing on both seems like a good option.

I love Soulseek, but you would instantly decimate any potential audience simply because it's not all that popular. It also means no one can access your work through a phone which is the way most people are accessing the Internet most of the time.
For distribution you're probably better off maintaining a presence on all the streaming apps, and possibly using Soundcloud or Bandcamp as your public-facing base. The option of using Soulseek would definitely be attractive for some listeners but they would be a minority.

I definitely don't plan on going full-soulseek, but I was considering making a few releases (b-sides and such) "soulseek-exclusive" if that makes sense

I don't think many people use SoulSeek to find new music so I doubt it but I'm not sure if it'll help in anyway but it wouldn't hurt, maybe just sticking to whatever you upload on and posting it to places that let you advertise your stuff, some discord servers have that which is good since it'd sand out more and be a popular enough place

Honestly, I only use slsk as a last resort to find really old music that I can't normally find using torrents.

It's a cool idea. Gives more reason to use soulseek if more people put their stuff directly on there :)

Yeah SLSK is cool to host your own files and share it to everyone, but you should reupload it somewhere else (youtube ?) so that more people can ear it.

>What do you guys think about this?
Sounds neat! Though it'd make advertising your music much harder
>If you are also producing music, would you consider releasing it on soulseek only?
Maybe just bootlegs or some bonus/experimental/wip tracks but I'm just a noob anyway
>And if you're a listener, would you track your favorite artist releases there?
If I like an artist's music, I'd probably just check every few months whenever I remember. I already do this on other services. Though having a way to get notified of new releases would be very helpful (like a newsletter/mastodon account/etc.)
Personally, the only homemade track I've put on slsk is a quick and dirty flip because uploading it to SoundCloud triggers its copyright detection system

You could try shi1ling your music on some slsk chatroo mas well.

SoundCloud has copyright detection? That's pathetic. I thought the whole point of SoundCloud was that it's a free zone where you could experiment with music you couldn't get away with on streaming services. Copyright lawyers should be rounded up and hung in the town square, I'm so sick of dealing with them. They're coming after the Internet Archive too (knock on wood)

Well following the idea from >>11913 I did start also uploading the songs on youtube so that people know they exist (also documented them on musicbrainz and linked in lastfm).
The funny thing is that I thought about adding them to RYM, but they have a weird rule that the release has to have a webpage somewhere to be worthy of their database (and things like musicbrainz don't count) so I'll have songs that can never be added to RYM muahahaha (it's retarded but kinda fun too)

Good thread.
In my opinion if your music isn't on spotify or at least yt it's not really accesible. My standard for releases is "my (old) parents can listen to it without much effort". Not many friends of mine would listen to my stuff if they weren't on main platforms either.
