What year do you think the first math rock album was released?
I was going to make a chart called proto math rock containing things like discipline era king crimson, the power and the glory era Gentle giant and late 70's Captain beefheart bu I want to know what is the latest album that could be in that chart.

There is actual math-derived rock music but what was first called that wasn't it. I'm no expert and I'll skip the usual "all music is based on math" rant you've already heard because there is stuff that is intentionally composed using arithmetic, even geometry.

There is nothing mathy in Slint any more than there is in Buddy Holly. I think this is a silly category for music to be put into.

Honestly I agree. When I think math rock of think of bands that switch tempo mid song or do cheeky stuff with rythem like tera melos, Don caballero, battles, polvo among others.
I wouldn;t even call Shellac math rock

The first math rock album according to rateyourmusic is Voltage and Violets by Victims Family. It's a good record too
