obscure hip-hop

Shogun · 2017-05-05 20:41
What are some of your favorite not-so-well-known hip-hop gems that you like lainons? Craig Mack is pretty good, his flow is amazing and his beats were pretty simple but most of his stuff is from the 90's anyways. He ran off to some cult in the mid 00's and there was a video of him that surfaced in 2012 https://youtu.be/MO5d6iNI_Ck Also I love Clipping's "CLPPNG" album, they remind me for some reason of Death Grips but with much more rap influenced lyrics. I've also discovered "Injury Reserve" just recently and their style is quite trap influenced but unlike most of the trap rappers that I know of, they're the only ones who actually sound quite catchy and intelligent. And finally one of my favorite rappers of all times who has sadly went to even more obscurity is "Cool Calm Pete" with his amazing album "Lost". You can find Craig Mack's discography on tpb, same with Clipping or you can just stream their whole album on yt https://youtu.be/Xw7Y1tevtRc Injury Reserve uploaded their album "Floss" on mediafire http://www.mediafire.com/file/9bslyw9ozw3o999/FLOSS.zip And the only place that has Cool Calm Pete's Lost album is yt https://youtu.be/N1PaeEeI-9k

Depends what counts as not well known; I like quite a lot of foreign rap, some of which is pretty popular in their home countries. I think it sounds pretty cool - rhymes are rhymes, even if I can't understand it. In fact, not being able to understand what is being said is probably a good thing. Lot's of rap lyrics are terrible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pI2fzcPEeOY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56Mm5NGnr3c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yOqqveXeBI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxE8Yr5lV1s (this one is so bad it's good) May as well ask since I'm here. I'm trying to find a track by a Polish group, the video is them going around an abandoned building smashing stuff. They are all wearing masks. At one point the music cuts out to someone beating a rug with a dusting paddle thing...I think it's a parody of that we are slavic song from Eurovision
John Doe · 2017-05-05 22:52
>>226 Any particular reason it needs to be obscure and not particularly well known? That seems pretty blind to a lot of rappers, especially since you aren't looking for any specific genre. Anyways, one of my favorites: One Day It'll All Make Sense by Common is slept on pretty heavily, but far from obscure.

>>229 >In fact, not being able to understand what is being said is probably a good thing. Lot's of rap lyrics are terrible. I'd disagree, being able to understand what the artist is saying is like being able to see their artwork with your own eyes. For example I wouldn't be able to enjoy Death Grips like I am currently if MC Ride wasn't yelling at me in English. Also rappers are being PAYED to write lyrics, that is their JOB. However a good chunk of them tend to do their JOB quite poorly which means that I most certainly will not waste my time on their bullsoykaf. >https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pI2fzcPEeOY lmao, there's an official video if you didn't knew https://youtu.be/6h0PLAUBK0A I'm not sure why were they going with the whole Eminem 8mile look in the video. And the song is about 2 friends a guy and a girl growing up together but then the chick starts dating with thugs and similar folks. The hook literally goes "If the chick becomes a hoe she will stay a hoe FOREVER and if the chick becomes a hoe she will stay a hoe FOREVER" >Depends what counts as not well known; I like quite a lot of foreign rap, some of which is pretty popular in their home countries Eh, I don't have a "obscure rap meter" with me so I was just thinking something that has less than 1mil views on yt and something that doesn't get brought up on other websites that often or at all (this is lit btw) https://youtu.be/lE4-jitK5o4 >>230 YES! We could go on and on insider trading about well known rappers that most of us have already heard, chances are if you're already a hip hop fan you've probably heard of Slick Rick, MF Doom, Big-L, Wu-Tang, Nas, Cypress Hill, Snoop Dogg(literally just the doggystyle is worth listening), NWA, KRS-One, 2Short, Del the Funky Homosapien, Kendrick Lamar, Big KRIT, Death Grips, Ab-Soul, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, J.Cole, Travis Scott, Mos Def, Talib Kweli etc. If not, just type "rap" or "rapping" in wikipedia and you can start from scratch. My "good" isn't the same as your "good", like I said above to the previous post, I don't want my time to go to waste, I don't need to hear a full length album from Lil Uzi Vert or Future or Ja Rule to hope that their music will sound mediocre at best. The same thing could be said about obscure rappers as well but the difference is I am not familiar with their work at all, I'm trying to expand my horizons a little bit and I think that it would be good if these lesser known rappers get a bit more exposure
Meddler · 2017-05-06 03:07
Lil Ugly Mane - my biggest recommendation. start with oblivion access or the weeping worm if you're ready for alternative hip hop (that's the soykaf i like). if not, mista thug isolation is always a classic. refer to pic for my info. JPEGMAFIA - amateur rap duo. some bad tracks but mostly produces good soykaf. Polly is my favourite song of theirs (heaps racist tho but idgaf) Some other, less known rap artists that I haven't completely dived into yet but I'm liking so far: BONES Cities Aviv Freestyle Fellowship

>>253 Beware of charts made by this guy. This one seems alright, but the vast majority of them are incredibly inaccurate and delusional in their forced inability to distinguish genres and scenes. His punk chart is the worst offender, making no sense and grouping bands together mostly at random without any logic at all and showing a blatant lack of knowledge on the subject.

Cowboy · 2017-05-23 21:52
>>229 >lots of rap lyrics are terrible So you don't like rap then? Might as well just listen to some soundcloud beats, lyrics are like the focal point of rap. What exactly is "bad" about the lyrics?
Turner · 2017-05-25 08:40
>>401 Not him, but you sound unbearable. Check Clipping - CLPPNG for an example of an album full of terrible lyricism. Midday radio tier recycled rhymes thrown over industrial beats to give it a little edge, it does nothing for either genre. That being said, just because I consider the lyrics of one album to be garbage doesn't mean I can't like rap as a whole. There are tons of great lyricists out there, but for every one there are easily 10 that are terrible. Despite what you may think, it's possible to enjoy something without loving every aspect of it. Also, claiming lyrics to be the focal point of rap while lowkey brushing producers under the rug as mere accessories makes it sound like you really don't like rap yourself. Where would rap be without primo and dilla? They defined the sound as much as any tupac or rakim, the greatest verse ever spit would be little more than a poem without a well crafted beat to give it life.
Emmanuel · 2017-05-25 10:38
>>420 You sound unbearable too cunt. If not for the lyrics it wouldn't be rap it would be a beat, idm, edm, whatever the fuarrrk. Without the beat or even a soykafty one its still rap. Also I love clipping and their lyrics so you can suck my dick.
Technician · 2017-05-25 14:11
>>401 >>422 Most music has generic or terrible lyrics. The problem with rap is just as you say, the lyrics are central to it. So when the lyrics are sh!t you can't ignore it. The lyrics have to be good with rap whereas in other music it's not so important.
Lady Jessica · 2017-05-25 18:16
>>422 Probably am. That being said, it doesn't make CLIPPING any less generic or boring. "When the stash low and it's no cash Get it in And you ridin' no L's no tags Get it in And she lookin' like you ain't gon' smash Get it in But she got her legs up on the dash Show these haters how to go" Also have to disagree with that second part. Without a beat, it's just spoken word poetry. The two can coexist together just fine, but one can not be called the other, and vice versa. Lyrics are very important, but so is the beat (as well as some more ambiguous ideas, such as construction and context).
Morpheus · 2017-05-25 21:23

>>425 >>436 Okay well sure. First thing though Story 2 by clipping. I think has pretty fuarrrking good lyrics. And second yeah most music of a particular genre isnt that good cause of over saturation. And I get what your saying because lyrics are so central to rap that this is more punishing in this genre. But the poster I replied to said "Most rap has terrible lyrics" and then posted 3 fuarrrking foreign polish swedish whatever songs. He didnt post examples of good rap lyrics. Even if most rap is terrible again because oversaturation that still means there is thousands of quality albums easily within discovery. That poster clearly has not even bothered, he just like beats and listening to foreign dudes speak. He just dismissed an entire genre probably off of surface level exploration of it. I have a lot of assumptions as to why he wouldnt listen to rap from his own country in his own english but im gonna bite my tongue cause you know what they say about assuming.

Wow I've never even heard of another person who knows of Cool Calm Pete. Lost was such a hidden gem for me. I'm really sad he didn't really continue with rapping. I would highly highly recommend Chester Watson. https://soundcloud.com/chesterwatson His taste in beats is to me impeccable. I've found a lot of good producers to draw inspiration from through him. His lyrics are clever and always seem to paint really good imagery. Lots of super chill tracks. Reminds me of rainy days and the best kind of grey skies Another personal favorite of mine are AKTHESAVIOR and Issa Gold of The Underachievers. https://soundcloud.com/theunderachievers-3/09-phoenix-feathers Not sure if these guys count as underground anymore but they're the last of their scene to not have some sort of mainstream success. Both AK and Issa are brilliant writers. Their subject matter and mood is incredibly diverse, and it never comes off as awkward. They're probably my favorite rappers of all time, and are the reason why I'm into rap as much as I am. They also dabble a little in esoteric themes which can sometimes come across as half-baked if you're really into that stuff. Generally though it adds an element to their overall character, especially Issa, that is very appealing to me at least. https://soundcloud.com/realreptoidsoykaf/sets/unstoppable-demon-shyt REPTILIAN GOD MANA is crazy. If you're into twitter I would highly recommend following him, he's on some wild soykaf. His music is steeped in references to the occult, interdimensional entities, and paranormal sci fi. He can have an almost industrial sound with how aggressive and noisy his mix/overall production, but it plays well with his character Honorable mentions include Nacho Picasso, Milo, Sirius Blvck, etc. I could keep going but I'd just recc you my entire library...
