Cyberpunk Music /cybmu/

No general thread for cyberpunk music on Lainchan? I'm still new to cyberpunk music and now it became significantly harder for me to find resources because they have evolved to cutting edge experimental subgenres over these years, or went to the path of self-deconstruction and post-post-modern way (I just invented these terms, forgive me ignorance), in addition the web searches are flooded by vaporwave. I didn't mean they are bad music, they have just gone too far for a starter like me. Some are pretty technology-savvy with clever names, but full of violent cracking and screaming in contrast to the general cyberpunk appearance of a peaceful Neon night with rain. And for vaporwave, it's gone far in another opposite way, I found the aesthetics is beautiful and unique, perhaps the retrofuturistic artworks are even better than the actual early cyberpunk works. But the sound is way too peace and flat, like those from 2814. I know it is retrofuturism, nostalgia. The sound is not the future, not 80s, nor 80s future, but the nowadays memorial of the outlook for the future in the 80s, and the echo from that time. I don't completely understand it yet because I don't have the culture background of the 80s' United State nor cyberpunk music. Anyway, their community is great, found a large underground/counterculture community on Bandcamp with wonderful aesthetics. Very magical, that you can arrange an anime character pre-2008, and some neon or seapunk in a way it became a nostalgia underground subculture immediately, with themes about Usenet, early personal computer, otaku culture, etc. Although I don't understand the music itself yet, really. Sometimes there are even a social-political message in the music. like the "Future, and It Doesn't Work" from [5], it was picked from an album of the same name, which has a background story of how The U.S Space Party's catastrophic foreign policy destroyed the nation - a surreal political sarcasm of U.S neoliberalism/interventionism? Long story short, too much for a starter like me. For now I would stick with pretty dumb and standard electronic cyberpunk music with a techno and mystical atmosphere. So far, here's what I discovered. I like the soundtrack from Lain Serial Experiment much. I found the music composed by Ben Prunty is great, specifically the Faster Than Light game soundtrack [1] and scores for the documentary Banking on Bitcoin (much better than the documentary itself, [2]), the OST from the game VA-11 HALL-A [3] is great (probably too popular to mention, but I'm a starter). By the way a band neatly named "Master Boot Record" [4] caught me attention, they mixed Chiptune and Heavy Metal creatively. Their early works are too metallic for me, but their latest album INTERRUPT REQUEST sounds great for a non-Metal audience. By the way, the selected chiptune soundtracks from the game Digital: A Love Story are excellent. [5] JK/47 on Bandcamp featured a good album mainly based on Neuromancer[6], and in another album Getaway 之旅[7], it's quite very interesting to see how an iconic visual novel theme song, Tori no Uta, highly-recognizable by the anime fandom, was deconstructed and lost its the original meaning, and became as a "background noise" of a dystopia future city. Lain, what are the music should I continue with? More music similar to those? What is the starter pack of cyberpunk music? In addition, recommendations of "historically important" cyberpunk music? Finally, sorry for throwing so much soykaf here... cyberpunk is really a big term. i'd narrow down some subgenres and recommend some things there. dance-able cyberpunk, drum n bass. back then called "the music of the future". moving shadow - "99.1"' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFfYVZ4Zuno vaporwavy/ambient/tropicore. lain inspired, classical vaporwave and weird soundscapes. part of a trilogy that gets even darker. kyonpalm - "cyberia" https://kyonpalm.bandcamp.com/album/- happy cyberpunky vaporwave. the world is not that bad, but is shattered and fake for sure. james ferraro - "far side virtual" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd-uSm8ittU dark ambient techno. an obscure, haunting rave hidden in a german forest. gas - zauberberg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKsLvEkefTc noise/glitch/minimal almost-danceable electronic music. soundtrack for a nightmarish matrix reboot. emptyset - "demiurge" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WS7Het5APE&list=PL9uaqoXlh8HUABOWjEv-I46MyGrG1I41e

For some early stuff I'd kind of recommend checking out Front Line Assembly's discography. It gives an interesting progression.

Atari Teenage Riot, Der Eisenrost, NiN... Cyberpunk crosses a lot of borders, it's not really a genre as it is a scene, in the same way you can't really categorise "goth" music easily; you can certainly point out a lot of goth acts, but they come in everything from hard rock to symphonic black metal to darkwave to dark ambient, so cyberpunk can cover anything from chiptunes to industrial to krautrock. And a few artists have released individual cyberpunk works, like Bowie's "Outside" or Billy Idol's "Cyberpunk".

You can find people inspired by sci-fi themes and technology in pretty much every genre, cyberpunk is also so loosely defined it doesn't help since everyone has a different definition. That said you can't go wrong with electro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBGIni8jPtU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qM4Lyg9AG0E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNLvAafSAVA

Maybe my definition of cyberpunk is different, but I've always thought Incunabula was *the* cyberpunk album, due in no small part to Kalpol Introl being featured in Pi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgzjFCXCA8g Like I said though, maybe it's more my definition of cyberpunk being more on the Deus Ex side of things more than something more grittier maybe.

>" historically important" cyberpunk music Best epitomized imo by Skinny Puppys 80s stuff which coincided with cyberpunk's golden age as a literary genre. Aesthetically it expresses the human/machine interface very well and lyrically it covers the same themes and additionally, corruption, surveillance, brutality, drugs. The album art is an integral part of the experience.
